Rating: Summary: How I Ended My Weight Problem Once And For All Review: I never met a diet I wouldn't try. I'd starve myself, lose weight and then start binging. It got worse when I turned 39. I didn't realize it at the time, but food binging wasn't my only problem. My rising credit card debt had a lot to do with my overeating. That led to severe money diets where I'd place myself on strict spending limits only to whip out my credit cards and start binging there too. Then my sister got me a book that changed my life. "SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS: 10 WAYS YOU CAN STOP FEELING OVERWHELMED BY MONEY AND START MAKING IT WORK FOR YOU," by Nancy Lloyd. It showed me how my yo-yo money dieting was causing me to gain weight along with gaining debt. More importantly, it showed me how I could realistically get a grip on my spending, pay off my debt and with those problems under control I could feel good and stop overeating! Both these books will change your life.
Rating: Summary: Fight Fat Works . . .Even if your'e not 40+ Review: I know this book is designed for women in and over their forties but the program can be accessed by women (and men!) of all ages. Trust me because I have been a patient of Dr. Peeke's for 6 years (I am 20 yrs old--you do the math!) and the strategies for weight loss and maintenece as well as coping strategies for stress she outlines in this book are issues anyone can relate to. I have integrated these strategies and gameplans (along with Dr. Peekes pearls of wisdom--I call them "Peeke-isms") over the years since I began this journey and they have become my lifestyle. Through following her program, I have grown over these six years into a confident, healthy, fit woman (I have also lost and maintained a substantial weight loss--over 80 pounds!). Dr. Peekes program and motivational coaching leap out of this book and any reader will find that they have their own personal lifestyle coach--and she's along with you for the journey of your life!
Rating: Summary: Deja View All Over Again Review: I thought I had already read this book...when I realized it was merely a "clip" book of other books ( The Glycemic Index, The Menopause Diet, Lauren Hutton's book, The Strong Women Series etc). The author presents credible research ( none of which is hers..her only article is a review of other's work on the subject )about how stress can make us fat, but her diet recommendations contradict her info ( drink Ultraslim Fast, which contains 35 gm of carbs from sugar...this is low glycemic? )I relieved my stress by sending this book back.
Rating: Summary: Bravo, Dr. Peeke Review: Bravo, Dr. Peeke. Finally a book that thoroughly addresses the science behind women's weight gain at the waist which gradually occurs while a woman is in her 40's and 50's, sometimes as early as her mid 30's. Not only is the science in the book provocative and impeccable, "Fight Fat After 40" is a thorough and extremely useful guide to helping women effectively manage not only their weight, but to improve the way they live their lives and care for themselves on a daily basis.
Rating: Summary: Men and Stress and Weight Review: Like many men, I have often claimed my ability to work under stress as a virtue. Dr Peeke has helped me to understand that long-term stress and short-term pressure are different, particularly as they relate to weight. I think of it as similar to the difference between depression and the blues. Dr Peeke explains that long-term stress has toxic effects which far outlive the original source of the stress. This is a particularly insidious for men, who are not generally inclined to acknowledge that stress is having an impact on them. This book can be a key to understanding the relationship between stress and weight, and can help break the deadly spiral of stress, weight gain, and more stress leading to more weight. As with any lifestyle change, all the diet books in the world will be worthless until you decide to make a change. For men, this book should scare you right into a new life. It's much cheaper than the alternatives - a heart attack, a stroke, or diabetes!
Rating: Summary: Right on, Dr Peeke! Review: My husband and I have had an inordinate amount of stress in our lives over the last several years. Dr Peeke says we've been living in Imelda Marco's closet as "the other shoe" keeps dropping on our heads. We have been most fortunate to have Dr Peeke's care and expertise to help us maintain our weight during those times of high stress and have learned what to do to counteract our "stress overeater" habits. Her book is a clearly written explanation of what happens to our bodies, particularly to women's, as we reach our 40's and beyond. Dr Peeke's realistic and practical advice gives us hope that we can finally be in control and become more fit. While the emphasis is on women, Dr Peeke's research has made a great difference in both our lives. There is no magic pill which will take the weight off your body; but reading this book will give you the roadmap to better health. Get in the driver's seat with her excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Take Back Your Life Review: At 42 years old, having tried every weight loss innovation over 30 years, and beginning to experience health problems, I found Dr. Peeke. I lost 50 pounds the first year and have kept it off for two using the methods in this book. My husband, who was not obese but fighting the 50+ paunch, 'came along for the ride' and lost 37 pounds. Although there is no miracle cure, our lives have improved immeasurably: travel, sports and life without pain. Men or women, if you want to take back your health and your life, Fight Fat After Forty provides the map.
Rating: Summary: At Last! Review: Fight Fat After Forty is a warm, inviting, informational book that offers us over-40 crowd real hope. Pamela Peeke did a wonderful job of mixing weight loss information with real-life testimony from people who have succeeded at getting fit in a liveable way. This isn't your diet of the month - this is a comfortable, healthy way to live. I want to send it to everyone I know.
Rating: Summary: Amen to Dr. Peeke from StressWoman - One Busy Executive Review: Fight Fat After 40 was written for me! It combines practical tips and scientific information that finally explains why I'm am so hungry all the time. Dr. Peeke sheds new light on the ravenous hungers [both for food and acknowledgement]that confront the overstressed woman. The book puts stress, fat, menopause and caretaking into a new construct that allows the reader to make some sense of why it is difficult to manage weight loss when you haven't figured out how to make yourself come first on your own to do list. Women are famous for taking care of everyone around them and stopping that "care" when it comes to ourselves. This book shows how busy women like me have whittled away the weight, learned how to take care of themselves and taken the focus off the numbers on a scale. It was so refreshing to read that a better number to pay attention to was not the number on a scale, but he numbers on the inside of your clothes! I'm much more interested in what size I wear..not some number on a scale. Dr. Peeke refers to this as your "clothesometer." The book provides some practical tips on how to de-stress in a time starved world and how to fit in exercise when you think there isn't another free minute in a crowded day, full of responsibilities. The down to earth tips, and the scientific explanations create a doorway out of the maze of stress and conditions of overweight. If you are looking to understand the underpinnings of weight and stress issues, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Science based and useful Review: This is an extremely valuable book for the women (and men) who want and need to stay fit despite the stresses of life. Dr. Peeke integrates current scientific research and the insights of her patients to provide a realistic and effective program for fitness. A major contribution !
