Rating: Summary: Wise and Delightful Tale is a Favorite Gift Review: A joy for my daughters and me to read when they were little - and not so little! - Miss Rumphius is now my favorite gift book for kids between 5 and 9 years old. The illustrations alone are rich and delightful. They accompany a profound yet accessible story about what makes a life worthwhile. Barbara Cooney gives us the always-interesting life of Alice Rumphius from her seaport childhood to her grown-up travels and her triumphant old age, when she becomes "the lupine lady" who spreads flowers wherever she goes. The story comes full circle as the lively elderly Alice passes on her wisdom to her young niece and her friends. The illustrations add depth to the story and provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A perfect book for pre-readers and young readers!
Rating: Summary: Miss Rumphius a Hit! Review: A real classic Ñ Miss Rumphius was recommended by a children's book expert when I was searching for a Christmas gift for a granddaughter. When the 3-year-old received the book, she said, "What a darling book!" I have since sent it to another child and it was again received with delight. The illustrations are lovely and the book may well inspire the young reader to travel the world. I am buying a copy for my own library.
Rating: Summary: A definite classic Review: A sweet story that goes much deeper. With beautiful illustrations both artistically and philosophically about how we should live our lives. I purchased this book for the graduates in my life and it has become a standard in my teaching of young children. I like to talk about Miss Rumphius as someone we should all strive to be more like. A great read but look beyond the actual meaning and let it speak to you about where you can improve the quality of your living.
Rating: Summary: Find out how Miss Rumpius makes the world more beautiful. Review: Alice is a little girl who wants to travel to faraway places and live by the sea just like her grandfather. But, her grandfather tells her, there is one more thing that you must do. And that is to make the world more beautiful. This story is about how Miss Rumphius grows up, travels around the world, settles by the sea, and finds a way to fullfill her grandfather's wish. When you read this, you will love it, and you will want to go out and make the world more beautiful yourself.
Rating: Summary: Nature Story Review: Alice Rumphius was told by her grandfather, as a child, to "do what you want to but you must then do something to make the world beautiful." Miss Rumphius went to places like India. Finally, she came back home. To make the world a more beautiful place, she planted thousands of lupine flowers all over her neighborhood. The illustrations are really beautiful and show the gorgeous lupines Miss Rumphius planted.
Rating: Summary: OK Review: Beautiful illustrations! But the story in itself is a little bland. Sure, Alice Rumphius is very noble and ends up following her heart and listening to her grandfather, but... Somehow i was left wishing for more. Maybe some drama?
Rating: Summary: Inspiration for all ages. Review: Duing a summer past I had the joy of discoveing this book at a local library. My friends and I were home from college and hd spent the afternoon reliving our childhoods in the children's section reading aloud to each other. When Miss Rumphius began, both the story and the illistrations had us captivated. I recommend this book to readers of all ages, who still believe in the power of love and imagination.
Rating: Summary: Clooney is a gift to all! Review: Growing up in New England I am able to see the gifts and people Cooney brings to life in her books. The Lupine are in bloom as I write this. Cooney brings this beautiful picture to all along with a few lessons about life we all should take to heart. Miss Rumphius is a charming tale for young and old! A must read! And add it to your child library as well as your own!
Rating: Summary: It is simply wonderful story Review: I have an 8 yr. old and once she was finished reading her book; she wanted to go and buy some of those lupines seeds. She wanted to do the same as Miss. Rumphius. Of course, How could I tell her? Those seeds could not grow here in Florida...
Rating: Summary: My favorite childhood book!!! Review: I received this book for my 8th birthday from a friend. It was a book I loved to read over & over. Now, that I have a daughter, I can't wait to read it to her. The pictures are so detailed & personal. I suggest it to every little girl, no matter what their age!
