Rating: Summary: Lovely, lovely, lovely Review: One of the best children's stories ever written! Gorgeous illustrations, and a message for all children. I cannot recommend it enough! And it's a good read - more of a girl's story than a boys - but who's asking these days?! Read it, you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Wonderful Review: One of the most cherished books in our house! My daughter and I went out and planted lupines in our garden and every spring she delights when they come up. The story is wonderful and the illustrations are awesome. She sits mesmerized while I read to her. It teaches children without "teaching" by giving them a heartwarming story about following your path in life and respecting the people, places and things in your world.
Rating: Summary: Miss Rumphius Review: The narrator's great aunt, Alice Rumphius, wanted to travel the world and do the one thing her grandfather told her she must do. He told her she must do something to make the world more beautiful. Miss Rumphius travels the world and comes back to live by the sea where the story began. She discovered her way of making the world more beautiful was scattering flower seeds so everyone could enjoy the beauty of the colorful flowers. The story ends with Miss Rumphius telling her great-neice that she must do something to make the world more beautiful.Teacher Notes: This book would be excellent to read if you were doing a unit on plants or the earth. Even though this book is fiction, realistic things happen like the wind and birds scattering flower seeds. Kindergarten and first grade would enjoy having this book read aloud to them. Second and third graders could read it on their own.
Rating: Summary: An Inspiring and Beautiful Book Review: Themes: This book is about dreams and plans for the future. It is about the importance of not just living IN the world, but also enhancing it.
Summary: As a child, Miss Rumphius lived with her grandfather, who was an artist by the sea. When she told her grandfather that when she grew up she planned to travel the world and then live by the sea, her grandfather advised her that she should do something to make the world more beautiful. Miss Rumphius ended up fulfilling all her personal dreams and, after struggling for an idea, was eventually inspired to make the world more beautiful by helping spread lupine flowers. Now she tells her great-niece Alice (who has some of the same dreams) to be sure to do something to make the world more beautiful too.
Illustrations: The illustrations seem to be in a beautiful "naive" style--very angular, slender, and almost motionless. They are done in acrylics with prismacolor pencil accents, and they establish the settings of the book (the house by the sea, and various exotic places of the world), which is important because, as Miss Rumphius discovers, "The world is already pretty nice.
I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Every child, teacher, and librarian should own this book! Review: This beautiful book is also a biography of the author's great Aunt Alice Rumphius, who when she was a little girl, told her grandfather that she wanted to live by the sea, and visit foreign lands. Her grandfather also encouraged her to do someting to make the world more beautiful. That she did, by planting wildflowers year after year. In the end of the story the author was told by her great aunt to make the world more beautiful, but she still doesn't know how. I think that Barbara Cooney made the world more beautiful by writing this book. I would like to buy one as a present, and I hope this never goes out of print.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful book! Review: This book is a must-have! Cooney did a marvelous job with text and illustrations. This is a wonderful book for children as well as any adult. It would make a wonderful gift. The message of this book is to go out and make the world a more beatiful place. Note to teachers: As a teacher, I read this at the end of the school year. I think it gives a special message to the students as they leave and continue on with their lives.
