Rating: Summary: Good premise but became slow reading Review: The idea of this book is a fantastic one-- Mafia don moves next door to snobby "uppah crust" couple whose lives are the last of a dying breed. They all should have been living in 1930 in an 80 room mansion, and the accumulation of details on this dying lifestyle at first was fascinating but then began to bog down. The couple's unusual sex life (anywhere and everywhere, on a horse or on a statue) became tiresome and the man's repeated rude wise-cracking to the Mafioso became more and more annoying, plus the beautiful, rich wife became boring to me. I wish this book had been cut back about 30% to get to the story, and I wish the characters had more going for them. They seemed so vacant I couldn't care.
Rating: Summary: Very realistic DeMille! Makes me wonder about my neighbors! Review: Wow! I'm not much into reading Novels, but this one I could not put down! I felt that I was also a neighbor of Mr. Bellerosa, and that... Well. There goes the neighborhood! I would like to see this novel go to Hollywood, or better yet, filmed on the North Shore of Long Island where incedently is where I grew up 24 years ago... Super Book DeMille...Would like to meet you one day if you're ever in the Grand Rapids Michigan area!
Rating: Summary: enjoyed it Review: had heard about author , from others, but this was first book by him that i read . . . and i enjoyed it . . . bit slow-moving at first, but then it really moves! . . . made me think, too.
Rating: Summary: Great characters, great story, great read! Review: It's like Sherman McCoy (Bonfire) meets the Godfather. Funny, suspensful, sexy, sad. This one has it all.
Rating: Summary: Laughing in the Tropics Review: Having finished all my holiday reading, I searched a dusty second hand bookshop in back street Kuta for somrthing to read. I picked Kolymsky Heights and, on the strength of Spencerville, The Gold Coast. What a read! The character and plot development had me laughing from page 3 onwards. I was very sad to put it down. Really very good.
Rating: Summary: I shall recommend Gold Coast to all my friends Review: This is one of the finest books I've read in ages. I think Mr Demille has a unique understanding of human emotions. This book is funny and sad at the same time. I cannot wait to read some more of his novels.
Rating: Summary: Among the Best of the Best Review: A book I will remember as touching on all the emotions. Any man that doesn't pay closer attention to a woman like Lady Stanhope deserves his misery! I'll be paying alot closer attention to the Susan Sutter in my life! Mr. Demille, do the world a huge favor...let us pick up with John and Susan Sutter again in Hilton Head..I, for one, need to know if forever does mean forever..Thanks for the emotional rollercoaster ride!
Rating: Summary: crash course italian cooking!!!! Review: this is definitly one of the best reads i had in a long time. Mr. deMille's research is amazing, the story is developing slowly but definite to a terrific plot. John Sutter is the one person one can easily identify himself with, funny, quick wit, a wealthy beautiful wife, what more do you want ??? A nice guy next door maybe ???
Rating: Summary: I'm still reading the book and hope it never ends! Review: I have never read a book where I laughed out loud on more than one occassion. Plot, character development, dialogue and the various settings are all masterfully done throughout the story.I think I will wait a year and read this again. You can recommend this book to anyone and they will enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Definitely more than a 10! Review: I am ever so glad to have chanced upon the General's Daughter and over the years, Word of Honour and now the so very excellent book, the Gold Coast. Mr DeMille has continually amazes me with each of his books that I read. And the Gold Coast, those so very witty humour, and a 'hero' in the calibre of John Sutter, those are the ingredients which make this book a must for all fiction fans. Thank you Mr DeMille, for a gem of book.
