Summary: Girlfriend's Guide - Not so funny or reassuring
Review: I found the "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" not so funny or reassuring, as it claims to be. Perhaps it may be reassuring to women have had similar pregnancy experiences as the author, but for first-timers it is scary and depressing. Suggestions such as you will be too tired for sex and your husband should tune into the Playboy channel... your mother should be close to your children because your relationship with her will likely last longer than yours with your husband... your husband will have sex with you out of pity because he can't be attractted to you when you weigh more than him.. the author's stong opinion against exercising during pregnancy because she thinks you will get fat anyway... during the second trimester people won't be able to tell that you are pregnant but they will talk behind your back about how fat you are... and you would be very "brave" to wear a bathing suit during pregnancy because cellulite looks worse during pregnancy... these, among other strong and negative opinions throughout the book may not be so reassuring to a first-timer. I found the author's attempt to be "funny" was more sarcastic and depressing. Not to mention that there was absolutely no medical information in the book. I have tossed this book aside and gone back to "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and "Your Pregnancy Week by Week", both of which I find much more informative, complete with medical information and a positive outlook on the months to come in pregnancy.

Summary: best gift for a pregnant friend
Review: I was told about this book by one of my pregnant cousins, she loved it because it didn't sugar-coat pregnancy. It explained the things that happens to a women's body in a straight-forward and humorous manner. Since then I have given to everyone of my "pregnant girlfriends" and they've loved it! Vicki Iovine rocks!

Summary: The hardest I laughed in 40 weeks
Review: I loved this book. Finally a book that wasn't so serious. The sarcasm in this book kept me laughing every time I picked it up. I still fish through it and my son is one and a half. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to really enjoy their pregnancy and laugh!

Summary: This BOOK IS FABULOUS!!!
Review: I got mine yesterday and have read half of it already. It is wonderful, humourous and just makes me feel like I am not the ONLY ONE!!!!!! Whoever doesn't think this book is funny needs to get a sense of humor. It is meant to be humorous. I can relate to every single part I have read so far. It is just what I needed right now and helps you to feel more "normal" in this very "odd" time..I just love it and can't wait to share it will all of my Girlfriends!

Summary: The best pregnancy book ever
Review: This is my favorite pregnancy book . this is the book that all pregnancy woman should have. I don't know how I would have gotten through the whole thing without it...highly recommended.

I also recommend " Babytales: a pregnancy companion" by M.S. Woodson

Summary: Exactly what it claims to be
Review: This book is exactly what it claims to be a light-hearted funny girlfriends' guide to pregnancy. I found it humorous and a quick read, but also very informative and I did learn a few (medical) things that the other books didn't tell me. You should definately supplement this pregnancy guide with one that is written with by someone with a medical backround. I liked 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy. This one gives you the inside track on what your girlfriends would tell you, if only you would ask.

Summary: Read it for the humor and little else!
Review: This book is not for women who want reliable information about pregnancy and birth choices. The author has poor and dangerous advice. Some of her claims are absolutely ludicrous. She actually says that C-sections are great, and that pregnancy is a time when you have an excuse not to exercise. She focuses a great deal on your pregnancy appearance. She's almost obsessive about how gaining weight and getting fat make you ugly. She even goes so far as to say she sympathizes with her husband for not finding her attractive when she's pregnant. (And this from a woman who was a pre-preganncy size 4, and the biggest she got was size 10!) This information is completely detrimental. Don't believe it. She's also completely dismissive of women who seek more natural childbirth, claiming they're "frontier women with something to prove." Again, her claims are ridiculous, close-minded, and ignorant.

The book isn't a total waste. You just have to know that you're buying a book for HUMOR and not for information. Her discussion about the wild mood swings of pregnancy will have you laughing out loud. However, I have to say that for the laughs this book may give you, I doubt it's worth the money. Borrow a copy from a "girlfriend" instead. And while you're at it, read The Birth Book by Dr. Sears.

Summary: One of three best pregnancy books
Review: This is my favorite pregnacy book purchase. It's the first of three top choices.1)Girlfriends guide. 2)Babytales: a pregnancy companion. 3)What to expect when expecting. You can't go wrong with any of these.

Summary: A humorous take on pregnancy - helps you relax
Review: This book is hilarious and now having been through one pregnancy I can tell you it is all TRUE. It makes a great complement to a more scientific book like Your Pregnancy Week by Week, which has more actual medical info. Vicki tackles common topics that you might not feel comfortable asking your doctor like "Do I get to keep this chest?" It's truly like getting advice from a trusted girlfriend.

I've read the Girlfriend's Guide to the First Year and the Girlfriend's Guide to Toddlerhood too - not as funny, but good books nonetheless.

Summary: A Wonderful, Funny Book
Review: I read MANY books during my pregnancy, but this is the only one I consistently recommend to people. It is also the one book I send as a gift to any of my close friends that become pregnant. I had many fears associated with pregnancy and childbirth, and this was the one book that diffused almost all of them. While other books are definately more informative when it comes to the medical details of pregnancy, this is the only book that made me laugh and enjoy being pregnant. Instead of being fearful and stressed out that I was being the perfect mother-to-be, I relaxed and put things into perspective. The results benefitted not only me, but also my marriage and my beautiful baby girl.
