Summary: Ready for a laugh?
Review: Vicki Iovine is suddenly your gal pal, embracing you and sharing all of her friends with you, along with all of their experiences, hopes, dreams, cranky husbands, fears and comedies. This book made me laugh out loud so many times that my (very humerous) husband kept running in to have me re-read to him what I was laughing about - what a kick. Vicki made me feel like I was part of the group before I even got pregnant. This book is not only funny, but very well written; the author's biography in the back cover is stunning - no wonder she's funny and bright!

Summary: This One Could be Done Without
Review: This book is largely humor with very little useful information on pregnancy. One of my biggest pet peeves was the way the author kept referring to pregnancy spanning 10 months and correcting those who say it's 9 months. Yes, a pregnancy is 40 weeks long, but months (except for February, most of the time) have more than 4 weeks and they do start counting 2 weeks before you actually conceive. Thus you are only pregnant 9 months! Also, I largely objected to the occasional use of profanity in the book. I disagreed with the discouragement of exercising, good nutrition, etc. She did not directly say not to do these, but condoned slacking on issues I feel are vital to a healthy pregnancy. Look elsewhere for a good reference on pregnancy with useful information.

Summary: Slightly annoying, marginally helpful
Review: This book provides little new information and some misinformation. The best parts were about dealing with the father-to-be, and how the most important result of birth is a healthy baby and mom. The rest was a litany of how to cope with the miracle of life from the shallowest angle possible. It's not just about how you look and dress!

Summary: A fun and confidence building companion to pregnancy
Review: This book is a must for first-time around, or even next-time around, mums-to-be. It shouldn't be taken as an authoritative medical tome on pregnancy, but it certainly does not pretend to be one either. Iovine tells the warts and all story of conception and pregnancy. It reads and entertains very much like what it says it is - a bunch of women friends getting together for a gripe session on their pregnancies but with plenty of the joy and fun of pregnancy there too.

Being humourous does not mean this book is short on providing information. If anything, the funny realism of the text aids in recall of Iovine's advice and account of her and her friends' experiences of their pregnancies.

Highly recommended. A great mother's day gift for a pregnant chum.

Summary: Good information delivered with a sense of humor
Review: I didn't buy this book until my 8th month. I wish I had bought it sooner! I could identify with everything she said - I often laughed out loud.

Summary: Pregnancy with a sence of HUMOR
Review: This is such a GREAT book! Not only is it extremely informative, its a riot as well. I think the best part for me was all the down-and-dirty stuff about pregnancy that it covers: the stuff that your embarrassed to ask you're doctor about and the stuff that your mama might not tell you. Its also easy (and fun) to read without all kinds of medical terminology. This is a wonderful book, especially for first time and young mothers.

Summary: misinformation and discouragement for the pregnant
Review: don't waste your money! I started to read this book when I was pregnant and could not put it down fast enough. If you want to be discouraged and misinformed, then by all means, read this book. Otherwise, try to find some other source of accurate and inspiring information. Pregnancy can be trying enough without someone telling you how miserable you SHOULD be. It really can take away from the pregnancy experience. I got this book as a well intended gift. Though grateful for the thought behind it, I wouldn't recommend wasting the money.

Summary: Thanks Vickie
Review: By far the best book I purchased to help me get through my first pregnancy. I truly feel like I know Vickie and all her girlfriends. This book has become my favorite gift for all my girlfriends as they become pregnant. We all agree it's a MUST HAVE. Vickie's First Year book is equally wonderful. THANKS VICKIE.

Summary: good informal advice but some glaring inaccuracies
Review: For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. After reading several serious books that focused mostly on technical aspects of pregnancy, I found the witty and personal style of this book refreshing. The author writes about many issues that I have been wondering about but would never ask my doctor. She is careful not to claim any medical expertise, and I think her advice is fairly commonsense. This being said, I feel it's important to point out that the book includes some information that is factually incorrect. The chapter about exercise includes many myths. Contrary to what she writes, regular exercise is associated with many benefits to both mother (less fat gain, shorter labor, less need for pain medication) and baby (easier temperament). These effects haev been established in recent medical research. I encourage her to correct these errors in a revised version. I think it's important to acknowledge that in some cases, one's own personal experience may differ from what is true for the population as a whole. Anecdotes are interesting, but drawing generalizations based on them is risky.

Summary: A Very Wonderful Book
Review: This is the best pregnancy book that I have ever read. It is funny, heart warming and helpful. This book is so good that you won't want to put it down. I rate this book as an A+, five stars. It almost feels like you are talking with a pregnant friend when reading this book. It is like this women is a personal friend writing all this information to you and sharing thoughts and info with you. I love this book and recommend that anyone who is pregnant or even thinking about becoming pregnant read it.
