Rating: Summary: Throw out the factual pregnancy books Review: This book contains almost all the answers that you may have when you find out that you're pregnant. Above all they are delivered in a no nonense launguage with humour which is just what you need when you've just found out your world is about to be turned upside down. I found information in this book which was nowhere to be found in so called factual pregnancy books. Vicki Iovine constantly reiterates that her book is totally subjective and although I was planning a homebirth I found her honesty and guidance was priceless. Subsequently after giving birth the only surprise I had was that I had a boy!
Rating: Summary: A Great way to ease the nervousness Review: I read this book after learning of my first pregnancy. It helped ease the nervousness I felt about the changes that I was about to go through over the next 9 months. I highly recommend it for any first time moms to be.
Rating: Summary: Witty, accurate and fun to read Review: I enjoyed The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy because it made me laugh, it made me nod my head in agreement and most importantly, it made me realize I really wasn't crazy with some of the things I was thinking, feeling and doing during my pregnancy. If you can laugh at yourself, you will enjoy The Girlfriends' Guide. Not everything Ms. Iovine says will ring true for you but I imagine many things will. If you like books like this one that contain the "real truth" about pregnancy, you may also enjoy We're Pregnant!, a realistic, down-to-earth look at life as expectant parents from the viewpoint of both an expectant mother and an expectant father. The two books together will give you a true idea of what to expect as your pregnancy progresses.
Rating: Summary: The Girlfriends' Guide To Pregnancy and her whole series. Review: Her books are so enjoyable to read and give honest down to earth advice too.She now has a column in a baby magazine, but I don't remember the magazine's title.I'd love her articles compiled in another book too!Her interactive CD should make for a great Baby Shower present!
Rating: Summary: It was fun Review: Its pretty clear that the author is relating *HER* perspective, you may not share it. But if you consider pregnancy a means to an end and not the defining nine (ten!) months of your life, you will probably enjoy this book very much.
Rating: Summary: The essential pregnancy companion Review: A friend sent me this book early in my pregnancy, and I read it cover to cover immediately. Then it resided on my night table (where I revisited newly relevant passages) until it was supplanted by "The Girlfriend's Guide To The First Year." I found it to be very comical, in a warm, reassuring and friendly way. While Vicky is definitely a little too preoccupied with her size 4 body, who among us is not a bit insecure in our body image, no matter what size we are? The point is, this is not a serious reference book. There are many of those available and you should have at least one. This book instead will make you realize that you are not alone; that the wonderful and yet utterly strange things you are experiencing are not unique. At the same time you feel that your complete absorbtion with your own little world is validated-Vicki tells you-"we've all been there!" If you are the first among your sisters and friends to be pregnant, you need this book! If you are not the first, well, its always nice to have new friends.
Rating: Summary: The Girlfriends Rock Review: Great book and a great change from the "written-in-the-80's-by-a-doctor-techno-journals." The book is written in a girl-friendy conversational style and, Vicki, the author is very funny in her observations. It was refreshing to read her "oh yeah, right" reality checks on many things but I was surprised when I read the back flap that lists her accomplishments. Wow. So much for that reality check. All this AND she writes too! Oh yeah, and has 4 kids...
Rating: Summary: Buying it again for another pregnant friend Review: A friend of mine gave me this book when I was pregnant with my first child - and I must say - in the stack of maternity books that I had begun to surround myself with - I was skeptical that this one would live up to it's cover. However, within a day I had read the whole thing and put the rest back on the shelves. I agree that Vicky has a lifestyle that is different than mine in many ways, but it is her blatant, brutal, relevant, and laugh-out-loud honesty that really set this book apart. Not only is it a source of much needed humor, but I really did learn a lot about what to expect during pregnancy and birth. I have since lent out my original copy as well as buying several more for my pregnant girlfriends. You simply cannot underestimate the power of a good laugh when you're belly is hanging over your knees, and this book definately delivers.
Rating: Summary: Pregnancy with a smile Review: This is hands-down, the funniest book I have ever read! I have read many books on pregnancy, but this one is the best on telling it like it is! Finally, Vicki and her girlfriends tell you from a "human" point of view on what to expect from pregnancy. If you're looking for medical advice you need to look somewhere else, but if you need a mental pick me up on your views of pregnancy, read this book immediately!
Rating: Summary: Lighten up about pregnancy! Review: If you want medical facts, get "Pregnancy and Childbirth, your questions answered". This book is more just for fun. I will recommend this book to every pregnant woman I know from now on. I laughed outloud at one point. Vicki has such a refreshingly honest way of telling it like it is. For instance, here is a quote on how we pregnant women tend to get a bit... um... obsessed with this experience: "As unique and special as your pregnancy is, it can tend to lose its fascinating and compelling aspects to everyone but your mother and you about halfway through. And unfortunately, a pregnant woman's need for attention is about as deep as the Grand Canyon. I hate to be so blunt, but it is important for you to remember, YOU DID NOT INVENT PREGNANCY, AND EVENTUALLY YOU WILL HAVE TO RESORT TO PAYING PEOPLE TO REMAIN CAPTIVATED BY YOUR CONDITION. Your friends have their own lives that will occasionally distract them from your crucial project."
