Rating: Summary: High Fidelity is OK Review: The novel starts out fine: good character build-up, great little lists about songs and women in our protagonist's past, etc. then, it gets kind of boring and staid. The end was very predictable. the character's voice is lakable and funny... very charming. Now, put some meat behind this character and a better novel would appear.
Rating: Summary: Just Read It! Review: This book is brilliant -- a laugh-out-loud experience. It's definitely a book I'll buyoften and give to friends. Nick Hornby's characters are almost *too* real. Do as I say... just read it!
Rating: Summary: Hornby's entertaining humor continues! Review: In High Fidelity, Hornby delivers the honest and touching (yet very funny) views of a single man in London in the 90s trying to mend a long-term relationship gone bad. The book is full of silly quotable passages of relationship philosophy and has a playful, though predictable, storyline. Its descriptions of male friendships are also interesting and entertaining. The book is a fresh break from heavy reading and made me laugh out loud. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Reservoir Dogs, The Clash and Soloman Burke???? --amazing Review: How can a mid 30's guy from London(Hornby's Rob) and a mid 30's guy from Chicago(me) think the exact same way? Hornby has cornered the effect pop culture has had on boys/men in the last 30 years. The book so accurately describes the mess that is western male development that it is scarry. I knew that someday my-over-500 cd collection would earn me ackowledgement for being a better human P.S. the book accurately defines Britain's best guitarist too--sorry Clapton/Page/Beck fans.
Rating: Summary: Well worth reading, although it did infuriate me at times. Review: I was introduced to this book by my boyfriend after he had read it. It is very thought provoking especially for a women to read, however the character's attitude towards his girlfriends and his life infuriated me in places. My boyfriend and I had many a heated discussion on the behviour of Rob Fleming. This book made us think and if a book can do this in my mind it is worthy of my recommendation to others.I am looking forward to reading Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch.
Rating: Summary: Really enjoyed it Review: To read this book is to be tickled constantly. Hornby's treatment of male thought, relationships, the 1980s really hit the spot with this reader. His understated humor and occasionally comic scenes have left many smiling memories with me, even a year later!
Rating: Summary: yawn... Review: The book starts on a promising note with Rob recounting his top five heartbreaks of all time... Yet, the upbeat, jazz-like rhythm of the intro gradually stumbles into a series of indistinguishable vignettes that progressively stunts any kind of character development, and leaves you totally indifferent about Rob's outcome. The feeble ending is thus comiserate to a story that is lacking in content.
Rating: Summary: CHEERS HORNBY!!! Review: What an excellent book. I felt every emotion while reading this novel. What more can you ask from an author! Can't wait for Hornby's next novel.
Rating: Summary: wow Review: A friend of mine gave me this book and said "I think you'll like this." Oi! I read it in two sittings and now I don't have to write MY biography. This book flows like a friendly river. Be prepared to get looks on the train 'cause you WILL laugh out loud. 'Tis sweet.
Rating: Summary: A very funny, realistic and accurate porayal of men Review: I found this book was the best I have read in six months. It had all the familiarity that makes a book closer to home. I enjoyed reminiscing as the book went nostalgic and sympathised with Rob (the protagonist) as he went through his trials. The book was gripping, and I read it in 2 nights.
