Rating: Summary: Frightening! Review: If your in your mid thirties and wondering why life isn't turning out quite the way you dreamt as a kid, read this book. A wonderfully crafted tale that strikes a chord on every page. It allows you not just to see the thoughts of the central character but to believe in them, to really feel their authenticity and the reasonableness, even inevitability, of their illogicallity. It casts a light on the thin line between success and failure, choices, the path dependency of life in general, hopes and regrets. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Confirmation of what men really think Review: A thoroughly enjoyable peek into the mind of the 90's bachelor. Reading this book gives one a flashback into one's own coming of age experience as well as some idea of why today's men behave the way they do in their relationships. What fun! A giggle-to-yourself, fun summer read.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant brilliant brilliant. Review: Despite an occasional lag where Hornby gets a little too self-indulgently whiny towards the middle, this book reamins a delightful (and ridiculously intellegent) depiction of single male life. It's like something Douglas Coupland would write if he were somewhat more talented, and a little less sensationalistic. I absolutely adored this book!
Rating: Summary: A man's book even a woman can enjoy Review: I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a book (and out loud!) The poor guy...he's really pathetic, but there's a little bit of him in all of us. That's what makes the novel so endearing and touching. The only complaint: I'm sorry it had to end.
Rating: Summary: Very Believable London Lifestyle Review: Lately, I've been reading a lot of books set in metropolitans and this was a wonderful blend of 1st person monologue and good British dialogue. Nick Hornby, while not a writer of great depth, certainly knows how to capture the mood of a generation. Cheers!
Rating: Summary: If you like this book... Review: ... you will most probably also like Helen Fielding's 'Bridget Jones' Diary', a very similar book about a woman/girl of 33. Also hysterically funny, dealing with similar problems, this time from a female perspective!
Rating: Summary: Why a pirate copy of a Bunker Hill 45 can make your day Review: This book reminds me why I always preface conversations in record stores with "You know, I'm not that type of record collector. Really, I'm not."
Rating: Summary: When do us men get a handbook this accurate? Review: Utterly unfair. When will a woman write a book as decimatingly accurate about their own gender as this one is about men? But at the same time, the majority of this book applies to women as well -- in fact, a woman I briefly dated gave it to me to read. Another woman I talked to about it remarked at how similar Rob was to herself. I think the writer is just so damn accurate that he nails human nature -- period. And, he does an excellent job of crafting an unreliable narrator. All the while after his breakup, Rob insists it doesn't even make his top 5 dramatic breakups. He keeps insisting this up to and through the point where he finds himself weeping at a bar to a Peter Frampton song -- whom he detests. You've got to read this book. Period.
Rating: Summary: What an insight into the male mind! Review: This books describes the lives of many of my friends, but does so with much more skill than they've ever managed... A rare treat: a fun read which still offers words for thought. And it doesn't hurt that the main character and I share a similar taste in music!
Rating: Summary: For ANYONE who enjoys a great read. Review: I am not a Gen-Xer; I am what is popularly know as an Aging Boomer. My favorite music is Broadway Show Tunes; hey, I don't know any of you people so I'm not afrad to admit it. And I'm female. In other words, I have nothing in common with Rob Fleming and his friends and most of the musical references in this book meant nothing. But great writing is great writing and I loved all the characters, laughed hysterically and hated to put this book down. So recommend this not only to people who you think will identify with the characters, but also to musically deprived people like me who just love a good read!
