Rating: Summary: Hilarious, and yes, it's better than the movie! Review: HIGH FIDELITY is one of the funniest, most engaging books I've ever read. The film was fun, but this is so much better. Great writing. If you enjoy this, you should also check out "MORE TOWELS" by Grant Jarrett.
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS Review: Absolutely the best book i have read. It is comical beyond genious. It has the most accurate perspective from a male mind ever. Amazing.
Rating: Summary: High Fidelity Review: I did read the book before seeing the movie, but believe John Cusack was the best possible actor for an American version of the book. In a quirky, semi-neurotic sort of way, Rob portrays an underdog type of persona who chooses to live life by his standards, not that of the current status quo. Cast for the X generation but universal in many themes. Should women be allowed to see how men actually think?
Rating: Summary: Great comic look at romance Review: Like many people, the narrator of High Fidelity is always looking for something better. As a result, the protagonist Rob doesn't realize when he does have a good thing. Breaking up with girlfriend Laura doesn't even initially faze his; among break-ups, it doesn't even make his top five. But soon enough, he is a wreck. His life after their break-up is both humorous and sad. The best humor actually comes from his record shop where he and his employees have a chance to display their musical knowledge and snobbery; Rob probably insults every reader somehow with all the musicians he puts down but it is done with a light touch. The story of Rob and Laura will never be mistaken for their Dick van Dyke show namesakes. Their relationship is at best rocky, but Rob's efforts to become a better person, though awkward are refreshing. Will there be a happily ever after? Hornby is good at letting you know that such things are really rare, but there is at least the possibility.
Rating: Summary: A quick read that leads to a satisfying ending Review: Let's not mince words. This novel speaks for itself, so I will spare the plot summary, and simply say that this is a fast read with much to consider and delight in. You will be there, right in the story, smiling and laughing. And for your efforts you will be treated to a wonderful ending which avoids any trace of sap. This is no small achievements, and I tip my hat to Nick Hornby. Thank you, sir.
Rating: Summary: Between The Boomers And The X-ers... Review: ...there was us. Hornby is the perfect British counterpart to Tom Perrotta. While the truths are universal, the language and references are very much of a particular generation: those of us who were the bridge between the Age of the Hippie and the Age of Punk. Brilliant, Nick. P.S. You can read this after seeing the film, no problem. In fact, you will realize that the changes made in the script made a lot of sense for movie purposes. Fortunately, there is so much great stuff in the book it won't hurt a bit.
Rating: Summary: In my selection of the top ten first novels Review: One of my weaknesses is a fondness for novels about fictitious music groups, evidenced by some of my favorites: George R.R. Martin's The Armageddon Rag, Iain Banks' Espedair Street and Roddy Doyle's The Commitments. To this group I can now add the first novel by Nick Hornby, appropriately titled after words found on many of your finest long-playing records. Rob, Barry and Dick are clerks at an offbeat record store, the type of store which never seems to attract many customers but still manages to stay in business. They've got some of the latest CDs, but their mainstay business is handling those obscure wax singles and recordings by local artists. The three also have a fondness of putting together lists of their "Top 5" things: films, Elvis Costello songs, episodes of "Cheers," etc. The story is told in the first person by Rob, as his Top Five list of ex-girlfriends. The whole premise here is unassuming, yet Hornby's gift for capturing the ennui of the dropped out class with gifts for accumulating an extraordinary amount of trivia is perfect for the plot. While this sounds suspiciously like a Generation X novel, or maybe even the plot to Kevin Smith's movie "Clerks," Hornby escapes the genre by writing a charming book filled with hope and love (although there's some guilt and pain that has to be dealt with before you get to the end). I enjoyed Hornby's style as well--clean, with lots of true- sounding dialogue, and embellishment only when necessary. A great first novel, and a writer to watch for in the future.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS WORTH TO BE READ!! Review: many people read nickhornby`s "high fidelity" very pleasantly and made the book become a hit.but on the other other hand there are many reviewers, who are in 2 minds about this book.in what do their opinions consist? The interesting thing of the book is the form of the language. Hornby used the colloquial type with vulgar expressions with the effect that everyone can recognize and identify with the main character Rob. On the one hand it seems that Hornby just wrote the story which was going through his head on the moment without thinking a while about it. The colloquial language shows that in the topic the book is about: relationships. He tells about every kind of relationships. It is a topic which everyone is confronted with so it is interesting to read for everybody. On the other hand choosing such a simple character was not accidentally. Everyone is able to imagine such a character. The women can laugh about Rob, the man can pitty him. I think it is just a simple story without deep thoughts on the first view because after a while you can recognize that it is a role play between Rob's thoughts and the story which is happening the same time. THAT BOOK IS WORTH TO BE READ!!
Rating: Summary: high fidelity Review: The novel "high fidelity" by nick hornby is the story of a boy named rob who is really frustrated by his love affairs. He tells us about his relationships so far and about the one he is experiencing at the moment. I think it's a homorous book, which is written in a very sarcastic style describing himself and his excessive selfpitty. The language used by hornby is very lifely, some parts a written in dialogues, similar to a screen-play,just as in real life. Thus one easily can understand and feel with the invidual characters, as they all are described in a very explicit way with a love for detail. I truly can recommend reading this book. julia
Rating: Summary: Not for me Review: I personally don't like this book, because it is only about everyday life of one man, Rob, who has got the same problems like thousends of other men have. Okay, I confess some parts of the book are quite funny, wehn you read how Rob is simply to foolish to handle his relationships with hie (ex)girlfriends an all these typical mistakes he makes.
