Rating: Summary: Get with the Program! Review: From Bob Greene, Oprah's trainer, the bestselling author of Make the Connection, a 4 phase, step-by-step program for losing weight & getting in shape -- permanently.
Rating: Summary: Easy, practical advice for better health Review: Greene's concept of physical fitness and health is simple: eat less, move more, and you'll lose weight and feel healthier. It's time to throw away stupid fad diets which cannot be maintained for life. Greene is candid and honest about what it takes to lose weight and increase fitness. This is not a diet, nor a strict exercise plan. Rather, the phased approach to gradually increasing health and fitness makes it easy for even a sedentary individual to make a positive lifestyle change. Although my level of cardiovascular fitness is decent (I already do the amount that Greene suggests for the final phase), I have always struggled with emotional eating. So much of this book is devoted to simple, easy-to-understand discussion of why people are emotional eaters, and what can be done to change. It has been so helpful; I have completely curbed my emotional binge eating. It hasn't been easy, but Greene's recommendations on a healthy diet have really made a difference. This book is intended primarily for those who are looking to begin a lifestyle change, but I believe it is appropriate even for those who are already working towards their fitness goals.
Rating: Summary: He is a Genius Review: Help yourself lose weight the natural way. Make yourself over into the best you ever. It's wonderful! This book and a book called Dreams: Gateway to the True Self are magnificant! Look for both on Amazon.com.
Rating: Summary: Good but still lacking spiritual inspiration Review: I found Bob's book sound and safe but many of the principles such as 'don't eat after 7 pm', still re-inforce the diet mentality that gets so many stuck in this rut in the first place. I agree with most of what Greene offers, but where he lacks, Deborah Low's book, "The Quest for Peace, Love & a 24-Inch Waist" goes one step further to nurture the spiritual aspect of getting healthy and losing weight. I used to be overweight and I now manage a womens gym. I know how many people, women in particular, struggle with body image and diets. Different than Bob, Deborah challenges the reader to re-evaluate their diet mentality while inspiring a whole new perspective on staying motivated and getting fit. I used to recommend Bob's book, but now I use "Quest" with all of my clients who struggle with their weight and I am having great success. Her website is also content rich at deborahlow.com In my opinion, use anything that helps you make peace with your body. Bob's book is a good start on the physical and emotional side but what about the spiritual? ...
Rating: Summary: It is wonderful Review: I have just started to read this book and I love it. It addresses many weight related issues, without being "just another diet book" (I have lots of those) It makes a great companion to any weight loss program or lifestyle change. Highly recommend ~ definitely a good read
Rating: Summary: Exercise advice is great but still missing a vital key Review: I have read this book, along with dozens of others over the years and although Bob's information is correct, I still feel that most of what Greene offers (like keeping a exercise/diet journal, ugh) instills that diet mentality that I've fought to get over. I read the other reviews and agreed with many, especially the one reader, Reese. I too read the book, "The Quest for Peace, Love & a 24-Inch Waist" and it's fresh perspective of feeding the spiritual aspect of who we are was far more inspiring and effective. In fact, I've lost 18 pounds being inspired! Do the exercises in Deborah Low's book first and you won't need to buy both books like I did. As the other review mentioned, her website was a help too. Overall, this book is clear and basic, and really good for exercise advice but still lacked what I needed to lose all of my excess weight over the past 5 months!!
Rating: Summary: Just Started Review: I just started on this program but after years of battling with my weight I feel good about myself and my clothes are getting loser. I just started Phase II and I am so happy to not be constantly counting points or carbs or 40-30-30 this etc. It is not revolutionary but put in the format it is in, it makes it doable!
Rating: Summary: Bob Greene knows how to motivate! Review: I like this book because it is not a "diet" book. Like Oprah says, "Diet's do not work!" I am really starting to believe that. By devising a plan that I made it is easier for me to stick with it. This book really motivated me to get going and get with the program. I like it because throughout the book there are questions he asks you and sections to write the answers. I never thought about most of these things he is asking and it has really made me think about why I am the way I am and how to change it. The day after I started reading it and signed the contract with myself I made a baby step and decided to not take the elevator at work anymore. So step by step I am getting there. Thanks Bob for this wonderful book and making me believe that I CAN do this!
Rating: Summary: A Good Book for Beginners. Review: I liked this book because it puts the elements of good health, diet and exercise into a clear, concise package. It reminds me a lot of the book "Fit or Fat" that was popular about 15 years ago, however, I think "Get With The Program!" is more extensive in that it helps you take control over many more aspects of your life for a more comprehensive program. I recommend it for anyone not already on a health program or that is unsatisfied with their program. It's not a fad diet or loose weight quick type of thing. It's a guide to get you healthy by getting you on a good diet with more exercise. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I loved this book. This book and a book called Dreams: Gateway to the True Self have completely changed my life.
