Rating: Summary: Give this one a try,you won't be disappointed Review: A great read, but be ready for many sleepless nights, you can't put this book down! It was recommended to me by a disappointed Amazon "Plum Island" reader and I'm glad I took his advise. This book would be a great movie
Rating: Summary: Modern Faust Review: a modern-day Faust tale that resonates not only with lawyers/law students but with anyone who is interested in ethical dilemmas or with what is worth preserving in a morally-ambiguous time. the end is startling as the protaganist who finally breaks free of his desire to emulate the successful big-firm laywer decides to become the advocate of the underworld. We are set to commend Victor for seeing through the facade of power to the rotten core, but the author immediately challenges our assumptions of right vs. wrong with Victor's final choice. An interesting vital, moral tale. My only criticism is that some of the characters are not believable--ie Veronica, but the real focus and force of the novel is on the wonderfully complex protaganist.
Rating: Summary: Not bad! This writer got talent! Review: A writer who could write with a heart. I totally agreed with the other viewer's comments. Lashner is really better than Grisham, but no movies, no market, and not enough readers. What a shame..
Rating: Summary: Complicated and well worth the time to read! Review: After reading a local review that simply raved about William Lashner, calling him the "best mystery writer in the country," I knew I had to find one of his books and read it. I was not disappointed.Victor Carl, an attorney with two first names, isn't your ordinary, every day hero. One might call him an anti-hero. Consider that he's a lawyer, first off. And that he's made some really bad decisions in his life, which has put him on the "down and out" list in Philadelphia. In order to save his failing private practice, he agrees to aid Councilman Jimmy Moore to avoid a racketeering and murder rap. Basically, he's sold his soul in order to get a leg up in the world. Not only does his decision turn out to be the most dangerous choice he's ever made...it turns out to be the worst. While Victor watches as his client is framed--and could it be that he's being duped as well?--he begins to learn a hard lesson about life, and about himself. An excellent, well-written novel, with deeply flawed and believable characters, Lashner is one author that gets added to my "favorites" list!

Rating: Summary: Wonderfully evocative novel... Review: As a former resident of the Main Line so derided in this book, I was thrilled to read it (as you might NOT have expected). Lashner honestly protrays a man who wants so much, but realizes what he wants isn't worth the price. He accurately captures the desires of people both on the Main Line and those wanting to be there. There was often a dark story hidden behind the well manicured lawns of the wealthier parts of the area (so many murders). He has also created some awesome characters starting with Victor Carl. He is hard on himself, but so very honest. Is anyone better than Morris Kasputin? What a creation! I enjoyed Beth and ADA Solcum as well. The book has some solid twists and turns and can be funny as well as dark. My only complaint is that is too long--cut maybe 50-100 pages and you have home run. However, this is a first book, so who cares that much? On to the next Victor Carl novel! One more hurrah for Mr. Lashner, he does not over do it on the court room stuff--I liked that alot.
Rating: Summary: WHAT A NOVEL!! Review: I adored this book!! It was a really meaty story. Just like the ones I love to sink my teeth into! I don't think I have come across a lawyer protagonist I liked quite this much since Rudy Baylor in John Grishams's "The Rainmaker". You can't help but adore Victor Carl in this story. Perhaps some of his goals lack sensitivity but you know that deep down, Victor is an honorable man and sure enough, by the end of the book even he realizes it. The suspense of the story is riveting, the characters are very real and there are enough twists and turns in the story to keep you intrigued. But the best thing about this book is it's depth and it's quality. I can't fully explain it, but it makes most lawyer type thrillers seem shallow in comparison. Sometimes I had to reread a passage and just stop to think about what was going on, but that is a sign of a great read, in my opinion. It is a delicious story and a one you just want to savor,so to speak. When you are done you sure want more of Victor Carl and I can't wait to read the next in the series. I hope Mr. Lashner is working hard on a third!!
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: I don't review books --- but this book is exceptional. There are many fine 'legal thrillers' available. This one is in a class by itself. Unusual -- brilliant -- wonderful writing - fascinating characters...great plot. Buy it you'll like it...
Rating: Summary: Gripping story Review: I highly recommend the book. I listened to it as a book on tape and the speaker was excellent. I am now listening to Veritas and can't wait to get the next one after that. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: An excellent LISTEN! Review: I listened to the unabridged recording of HOSTILE WITNESS read by one of my favorite readers, Richard Ferrone. So, in addition to a riveting plot and good characters, I got to hear Morris' wonderful accent, not just read it. Very entertaining!
