Rating: Summary: Poorly written and a dreadful weepie, but still enjoyable. Review: I was given this book to read by someone who said I would enjoyit. Sure, I thought. But I decided to give it a go. The 1st half is poor - slow, almost amatuerish, but by the middle I was interested, and by the end I was in tears. When asked later if I liked it, I replied, "Oh I always enjoy a good cry!". So take it for what it's worth - it's not a great book, it might not even be a good book, but it's a lovely story, and excellent for an evening when you need a good cry!

Rating: Summary: Beautiful, extraordinary, very well written. Review: The characters of this novel stayed with me for a long time long after I finished the novel. This is a very well written and creative story, and the characters are endearing. It's a classic tale and it has left a lasting impression on me. Iowa, Kincaid, Francesca and the bridges seem so alive and real to me, though I have never set foot in Iowa. This is an unforgettable story.
Rating: Summary: World's Longest Hallmark Card -- though not the best. Review: Ditto
Rating: Summary: Boring! Review: This book was really boring. I felt asleep more as three times per page! What happened in this book? The end of the story is the same as the beginning!
Rating: Summary: A beautifully written and powerful story. Review: I've been reading with great interest the extreme polarity of reader's comments and personal reactions to this book. I just finished listening to the unabridged audio tape and found it - in my opinion - to be among the best examples of beautiful writing style and excellent story telling I've experienced. It's always worth noting when something stirs up such a mix of positive and negative response, especially since the negatives sound as though alot of inner anger has been stirred up! I for one, will see the movie again, read the book more closely, and give a repeat listen to the audio tape (beautifully read by the author).
Rating: Summary: The "FRIDGES" Parody was an assault, and as woman who Review: has experienced the pain of love lost, I find the comparison offensive. Women are far truer to themsleves when it comes to loyalty. Francesca kept her promise to her marriage and to her children all the while knowing the frustration of love lost. This is romantic writing at its best with an ability to touch at the core of the pain. I would recommend that all those who missed the point re-read it. Placing the "Fridges" on the same level is a testament cynicism.
Rating: Summary: Yeccchhhh! Review: I must thank Robert James Waller as I now have a new litmus test for dating women. I will, from now on, refuse to date anyone who liked or cried when reading this book (unless they were tears for how badly written and narcissistic it is). Utter Trash!
Rating: Summary: Nugatory! Review: I'm an older woman, and hopelessly romantic. I found this book so badly written, so utterly nugatory, that its bestseller status makes me worry about the future of the human race.
Rating: Summary: I adored this novel! Review: Many people thought this novel was drivel & poorly-written. I disagree wholeheartedly. It isn't often that I finish a book & hold it to my chest, close my eyes, take a long, deep breath & feel the passion and pain of the characters. This story made me think of my own "lost love" and I felt that Waller's prose captured that feeling very honestly.
