Rating: Summary: Interesting story... Review: "I was Amelia Earhart" is an interesting, and original story. Mendelsohn does a wonderful job of fictionalizing Earhart's journey in a way that no one has thought of. Therefore, it gives the readers a new dimension for imagination and dream of this famous pilot. The only downside to this story is the fact that everything happened TOO coincidentally. What is the odd that 2 people will survive a plane crash that happened thousands of feet in the air, providing the fact that the technology of airplane manufacturing was not that great in the 30's?
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book about a pioneer aviator... Review: ...this isn't it.This is sort of dreamy and stream-of-consciousness, very metaphorical, certainly lyrical, but not very satisfying if you're interested in Amelia Earhart herslf.
Rating: Summary: Too Slight Review:
Jane Mendelsohn's first novel neither warrants the high praise given by other reviewers, nor is it without merit. This admittedly brief book is a series of moods and impressions that wash over one another, like waves on the island beach where Earhart is stranded. This is not a story for those of the action-picture mentality.
Mendelsohn writes compact prose in winningly direct images: "In the Electra the light is blue. There's a smell of gasoline." But elsewhere, an effective metaphor in the opening pages reappears so often that it loses its power.
There just isn't enough material here. Pages given over to epigraphs (Woolf, Defoe, and Bronte) and acknowledgements are too much like padding. In the end, this is an undemanding fantasy that will please many readers.
Rating: Summary: "Earhart" flys high Review: Ever just wanted to escape? To run away from everything in life?
This is the whole basis of "I Was Amelia Earhart", a fascinating and highly detailed novel of adventure and self discovery that I throughly enjoyed. It is a story that makes you re-think your perception of Amelia Earhart as a person. You really discover her inner sadness and find a connection with the one of the greatest heroine's of our time.
I really enjoyed this novel and hope others will read it
Rating: Summary: A short novel packed with a tall imagination on Amelia Review: A quick read... "I Was Amelia Earhart" has prose that lets you sore and plummet with her and her traveling companion/lover.
You can almost feel the dewy humidity on your face as she describes her experiences on that tropical, middle of no where, island.
A woman with drive, instincts and saavy.
Rating: Summary: Imaginative; beautfully written. Review: Along the same lines as Alan Lightman's "Einstein's Dreams." What might've been going through Earhart's mind? And how might have the story played out? I enjoyed this first novel, and look forward to her next
Rating: Summary: I'D TAKE THIS BOOK TO A DESERTED ISLAND. Review: ALTHOUGH I KNEW THIS WAS A NOVEL, IT SEEMED TO HAVE REALLY HAPPENED. I REALLY DIDN'T KNOW HOW IT WOULD END, BUT I HURRIED TO FINISH IT
Rating: Summary: Magical! Review: Although the story in this book was rather cliched and non-original I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. I read it on the beach which, I believe, is the perfect setting in which to read it. I felt like I was on the island with Amelia. The writing was absoloutely phenomonal. It was very light, airy and conveyed in its vocabulary the fantasy that it was. A great, relaxing, short read for your next day at the beach...or on a deserted island...whichever comes first
Rating: Summary: Wonderful novel enacting a "maybe this happened ..." Review: Having read some pretty heavy books lately, I decided to pick up some lighter reading for a break. This book came up under BookMatcher recommendations for me several months ago. BookMatcher can be pretty smart. Easy to read, yet it leaves an impact on the reader. The soaring heroine and her drunken navigator. A wonderful novel that is written almost as Earhart's diary, this is a tale of what might have been. An intriguing possible ending to a mystery we will likely never solve. Enjoyable light reading.
Rating: Summary: The strength of Amelia Review: I always knew that Amelia Earhart was an incredible, magnificent woman, but after reading this book, I was able to see the other dimensions of her that could have been her if things turned out differently. This was an excellent book. I loved the creativity that the author had and how she created another world for Earhart. The words on the page were delicious and delectable and made me want to devour the book. I know a book is good when the writing entrances you and tricks you into reading line after line. The story line was original and beautifully presented.
