Rating: Summary: Not much to be Said Review: I'm not sure what to say about Far From the Tree after reading it. I really hesitant to say I was disappointed. Maybe this was just not a my kind of story. I had hoped for another 5* read just as Trying to Sleep.... While it was an okay read it just lacked so much for me. I did enjoy reading the secrets unfold about the mother and seeing two sisters and an mom finally bonding. While it's not one of my kind of reads it was interested. I was reluctant to give 4 stars only because it was worth more that 3 . I would say 3.5 . Certainly a different kind of read it that makes any sense. I hope the duo get back on track with the next book. I feel they can and will do better.
Rating: Summary: A Heart-Warming Story Review: I really enjoyed this latest novel by Deberry and Grant. This is a heart-warming story about family and the secrets that sometimes exist within it. It is a story about the lives of two sisters and their mother, and how each one of them learn to release the "burdens" they have carried with them for so many years, and evolve into the true women they were intended to be. It is a story about letting go and realizing that noone is perfect, and that family will be there for you no matter what. I especially liked how the characters grew toward the end of the book, and learned to accept each other for who they are. I hope that there will be a sequel to explain Celeste's situation with Everett, Ronnie's new life in Prosper, Nikki's newfound profession and relationship with Brian, and Della's new beginning with long-time friend Lester. I really enjoyed the story, and know that a sequel will be even better.
Rating: Summary: Parents are people too Review: It is something when we find out that our parents are people too. That is one of the main things that the women in this novel must learn before they find peace of mind. Once the characters learn that important lesson, they were able to find what makes their lives work and how to work together as a family and not judge one another for their mistakes. What makes this story a good story is that the writers showed growth among the characters that may be transferred to real life situations.
Rating: Summary: family triggers Review: I read this book and it was good, but Celeste and her sister Ronnie got on my nerves they made me wanna tell them off.Della was fun reading about her made me think about my own family and their land in the country and what secrets they might have had before i was born. This book was good ,but it left me wanting more and wondering what happens next. I hope the author's write a sequel i intend to write them for a sequel to this.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was refreshing to read something about family life as opposed to that whole relationship "love/hate" theme that most books seem to be about. The sisters relationship kind of hit on how most of us are in one way or another with our siblings. Highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: TO FORGIVE IS TO HEAL AND LOVE. Review: Proud African American mother Della (Odella) Womack Frazier, had so much hurt and and pain along with secrets from her childhood that she passed it on to her chlidren Celeste and Veronica (Ronnie). When the glue of the family the husband and father Will dies these three ladies have to deal with the past, the present and the future in order to survive. The healing process starts with a trip to Prosper,NC a place Della never wants to see again. However, when her baby Ronnie takes ill in Prosper, Dell has to bite the nail, follow her heart as a mother to go and see about her baby.(WHAT MOTHER WOULD NOT?) As mother and daughters share secrets, learn to trust, and love each other they heal. As a results of the soul searching and cleansing with each other they are all on the road to a better life. Wonderful story,I wished for my mother, and was grateful for the relationships I have with my sisters and sister-in-laws.
Rating: Summary: This book hit close to home! Review: I LOVED this book. This is one of those books that's hard to put down and for me, hit very "close to home". I plan to pass it on to my sisters and mother.
Rating: Summary: Far from the Tree was right on point. Review: This was a very interesting book. I loved the characters and I could really empathize with all of the characters from one time or another. I lost count on how often I cried and my heart really went out to the mother. I read it in one night because I wanted to know what became of the characters. I love a book you can't put down and this was certainly one of them. Kudos to Deberry and Grant. I wasn't a big fan of "Tryin..." but I'm so glad this was the book selected for our bookclub.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read Review: I have to say that Far From the Tree is one of the best novels that I've had the pleasure to read. It is amazing to me how real to life the characters and events were, especially in regards to the African-American community. It has become all too common that we remain silent about things within our family unit that would be beneficial if disclosed. Even when families don't choose to share the tragic or life changing events from their past, the ripple effects continue. The common misconception among people is that past, present and future are unrelated. In this novel, it is made very clear that the past is the foundation upon which you will build your future. If you are building your current existence on lies and non-truths, rest assured that your lies will find you out. It was positive and refreshing to see that when the load got heavy, all of the characters had to face the music and bare their souls. We as people (especially black people) should recognize that the longer you live in fear of your past, the stronger the hold it will have on you. The moment you turn and face "the demons" of you past............you recognize that they loose strength, if they don't all together die. The characters in the book were very real to me. I felt elation as one achieved a victory, and a stirring as each one struggled to overcome obstacles, confront the challenges of life and embrace change. This novel has the power to lead you to a point of reflection in your life and relationships with family and friends.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed!! Review: I guess I set myself up for this one. I had high expectations for this book because I loved "tryin to sleep". I had to force myself to finish this novel. It was definitely below my expectations.
