Rating: Summary: What a terric book! Review: Having read an excerpt in a magazine earlier this year, I was anxious to read the entire book. Since it was not yet released by the publisher, it was a long two month wait, but well worth it. This book is about far more than a "30 Something" woman who makes a life style change; moving from the city to a farm creates a domino effect that cascades into every corner of her life. And, delightfully, Mrs. Laskas takes us with her on this journey of discovery and change. The story pulls you in, slowly, but surely, and you find yourself really caring about the outcome of all characters, animal as well as human. I found myself in tremendous sympathy with the author, her bravery, fortitude, insecurities, and all the loves of her life. And, finally, lest things become too serious, the entire story is told with a charming combination of dry humor, sense of wonder, and discovery of self that make it a book hard to put down. This was a Five Star Read, and I sincerely hope Mrs. Laskas is at home right now on Sweetwater Farm writing the squel.
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Funny! Review: I read half the book the very first night and forced myself to slow down and make the remaining half last. I can't remember the last time I laughed and cried while reading a single page in a book. And not just an internal chuckle, but full-bellied out loud laughter. Other than the first few pages that reminded me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum (the humor seemed a bit forced), this is a great book. Loved all the animal names, particularly Screech, Walter, Wilma, Marley and Irving. It seems to me a lot of good humor was centered around the animals. Readers who enjoy Peter Mayle (A Year in Provence) and Jim Mullen (It Takes a Village Idiot) will love this. I thought it was even better than It Takes a Village Idiot, which also dealt with a "big-city" couple moving to the country. The focus of Mullen's memoir was the humor in buying a "country home," whereas Laskas' delved deeper and handled several emotional issues, drawing the reader in closer, not glossing over the harsh realities of life, whether on a farm or in a city. I can't wait to read the sequel, The Exact Same Moon: Fifty Acres and A Family.
Rating: Summary: A Fun & Easy Read Review: I really enjoyed this story. It was a very fast read. Not the type of book you just CAN'T put down, but the kind that you just don't WANT to put down. The author does an excellent job in describing scenes so you can really picture them in your head while reading. She also evolves the characters quite well which makes the entire story very believable which just draws the reader in even further. It's not a book of surprises and twists, but it will make you laugh out loud!
Rating: Summary: Funny and realistic portrayel Review: In this funny and realistic portrayel of life on a farm, Laskas succeeds in tickling our funny bone. She makes us love the animals, as she reveals the details of their existance. The read is such an enjoyable experience, I cannot wait to read her next book. Entertaining true life memoir. You don't necessarily have to be an animal love to appreciate this book, but it would probably help. Bravo to the author, on finding a most engaging voice, and sharing it with her appreciative readers. Arlene Millman author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier)
Rating: Summary: Loved it!! Review: This book has it all - animals, a farm, the country, love, marriage, and life's ups and downs. What a grand adventure of leaving the city and finding that dream house, er farmhouse, in the country.
