Rating: Summary: Nothing special - another Robin Cook wannabe Review: An average first novel. The plotting and dialog are mediocre, and the characterizations are poor. Like many others, this author tries to be Robin Cook and fails.
Rating: Summary: CREDIT WELL DESERVED!!!!!!! Review: As an African American woman, I am a part of a women's book club where it is mandatory for us to read a book each month. This month's book was the Silent Cradle. My book club really enjoyed this novel. I felt that the Silent Cradle was an interesting book. The suspense in the book allowed me to finish this novel in three days. I feel that some of the responses were somewhat harsh and unnecessary because writing your first novel is not easy. I have read books by authors that did not have any meaning, a plot and that were not worth reading. I feel that Mrs. Cuthbert did a wonderful job on her first novel. I belive that she was able to put a lot of insight into the novel do to the fact that she is in the field. I would definitely read other books written by her and I have recommended her novel to other readers. I would like to give Mrs. Cuthbert credit for a novel well done !!! I would also like to encourage her to continue to write mystery novels because there are not many African Americans who are into writing mysteries.
Rating: Summary: Predictable Fun Review: Cuthbert certainly isn't breaking any new ground with her debut novel, but it is certainly a quick read, with good characterization and able action sequences. The plot is brilliant in theory, less so in its execution. It becomes apparent all too soon who is beyond the nefarious plot of inducing expectant mothers into premature labor.Admittedly, the novel is difficult to get into, and bears all the signs of a new author, but soon the plot gels and you'll be lost in its unfolding. While the denoument is predictable, you'll hang in there with main character Dr. Rae and with Cuthbert to see the villain get their comeuppance.

Rating: Summary: can we award a zero? Review: Cuthbert wrote a thrilling page turning novel called the The Silent Cradle in response to her mothers death in the back of an ambulance while giving birth. This is a mysterious fiction novel that helps Dr. Rae overcome the fear of her mother's death. Dr. Rae decided to become an OB/GYN because the help and reliailty on other nurses was poor. Saving the life of a woman who is having difficult birth defects is very important to her because of the tragic death she occured with her mother. Its amazing how anyone can be a doctor for the same reason your mother died and see the deaths of many women and babies each day. When a series of woman come in the hospital with serious complications, Dr. Rae is worried that the hospital is admitting patients that are to complicated for them to handle. I recommend this book to anyone that likes to read books with a lot of action and surprising endings. I rated this book a 4 because it used a distinct version of actions.

Rating: Summary: A few weak spots but this author is a atent to be watched Review: Dr. Rae Duprey, head of the Berkeley Hills Hospital OB/GYN department, learns that the board is considering shutting down her section for economical reasons. Apparently, Rae's department is losing money because it is unable to compete with the Birth Center, run by her ex-boyfriend Bo Michaels. However, a bigger crisis occurs when a rash of Birth Center patients begins to arrive at Berkeley Hills' emergency room with deadly complications. Rae is blamed and subsequently fired. Not one to sit back, Rae begins to investigate the abnormal amount of emergency deliveries. As she digs deeper into the mystery, Rae realizes that someone, who knows obstetrics and the hospital from an insider's perspective, is making money via medical vandalism. THE SILENT CRADLE is an intriguing medical thriller whose characters need CPR to turn them from caricatures to people. The story line is interesting and moves forward at a rapid pace, a happenstance which ensures the audiences' undivided attention. Margaret Cuthbert demonstrates she has plenty of talent (see the ER scenes), but needs to humanize her heroine, support cast, and villain. Still fans of the sub-genre will enjoy the cut-throat (literally) competitive edge to the health industry, especially when it comes to the baby boom business. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: How could anyone give this book a good review? Review: Having just read this book (and the attached reviews) I can only conclude that the favorable comments about The Silent Cradle were made by close, loyal friends of the author. This book was an embarassment. Poorly written with amateurish plotting and boring characters. I am sorry I wasted my time plowing through it!
Rating: Summary: Yuck and double yuck! Review: Having read the other one-star reviews for The Silent Cradle, I must agree with the comments below. This book peaked my interest because the author is a woman of color and a doctor. Too bad the book is so predictable and trite!
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed this medical thriller from the beginning Review: I enjoyed this book because it involved two of my favorite things--a woman protagonist and a medical mystery. The writer used believable descriptions of the medical procedures without overdoing it. I am not a medical-type, but I understood the "real life" examples used. It was a great summer read.
