Rating: Summary: Exccellent Medical Mystery Review: This book has the most riveting emergency room scenes that I've read in a long time. Patients would go to the birth center with seemingly normal deliveries and end up at Berkley Hills hospital emergency room. Rae would spend her time trying to save their lives, find out who was behind this unheard of medical sabatoge and save her job. I read each page in anticipation, praying the responsible person would soon slip up. I did not get lost in the medical jargon, and would highly recommend this book. I would read this author again and again!
Rating: Summary: This book was EXCELLENT Review: This book was excellent and as soon as her next book comes out, I will be buying it.The heroine was one that I found myself relating to and liking. It may be unrealistic from an OB/GYN point of view, but I am not a doctor so I don't care. It made the OB/GYN field seem very interesting. Also, I would imagine that most fiction books (as well as television shows, movies, etc.) have to overdramatize a bit. Why would we read a book about a doctor who just had plain old office visits with no happenings and no drama? I am pretty surprised about the number of negative comments and wonder about their validity. I love mystery books and am a fan of many mystery series (PD James, Sara Paretsky, Grace Edwards, Janet Evanovich, and more) and Ms. Cuthbert is certainly among the best. The Silent Cradle was interesting and complex and had many things that people can relate to in their own lives (complex relationships with friends and ex's, problems at work, rivalries, and more). Again, I LOVED this book and anxiously look forward to her next one. If you have any questions about whether or not you'd like this book, don't worry about it. If you like mysteries with a female protagonist, you will like this book.
Rating: Summary: Profound disappointment. Review: This is a book I really wanted to like. The concept of a minority author with a lucrative career as a professional, trying her hand at writing--well, there's romance in the situation before pen is put to paper. What a disappointment. What ever happened to the role of the editor? I had the feeling, as I was painfully slogging through page after dilletantish page, that this was a modern case of the Emperor's New Clothes. No one at the publishing house had the nerve to call a halt to this fiasco before it hit the presses. Either that, or the publisher was so cynical that he or she believed that the book might be a hit simply because of the author's personal story, and the color of her skin. Never mind about the clicheed plot, one-dimensional characters, and drivel dialogue. When I think of how precious time is nowadays, I found myself getting angry at all involved. Including myself for pushing through to the so-what-who-cares ending. I trust Dr. Cuthbert's patients get better care than did her manuscript.
Rating: Summary: Excellent writing for a first novel. Review: This was a wonderful novel in every sense. The heroine was a smart, brave and refreshing entry into the world of fictional heroines. I very surprised to see that this was Ms. Cuthbert's first effort as a writer. I look forward to future books featuring Dr. Rae. Keep up the good work Ms. Cuthbert.
Rating: Summary: Extremely poor example of the medical thriller genre Review: Very disappointing. This book is not well written. It has stiffly constructed, one dimentional characters who are placed in ridiculously contrived situations. I felt ripped off! Robin Cook has nothing to fear.
Rating: Summary: Major editing would have improved book. Review: When my husband brought this book home from a laundromat read, I felt its heft and was excited. Never, though, have I skipped so much through a book. The hospital politics, the black female doctor stuff, the man/woman nonsense -- BORING. I'm amazed a good editor didn't tell Dr. Cuthbert to skip all that and stick w/her thriller. The other thing that bugged me about this book was feeling it wasn't too smart a thing to tell people how to torture or murder pregnant women.
Rating: Summary: A complete waste of money--horrible! Review: With some of the poorest, most amateurish writing ever seen on the printed page, Silent Cradle is a joke. It is poorly plotted, with one-dimensional characters and an ending that was more predictable than an episode of Marcus Welby M.D. I bought this book expecting an enjoyable read, but it is stories like this that drive me back to watching television.
