Rating: Summary: Highly influential book on character building Review:
This book can be considered as one of the most influential books on character building, personal mission, effectiveness and leadership. I keep referring to this book often.
Let me go through what I learnt in this book and it will be clear as to why this can be a life changing book.
In Habit 1 ( Be Proactive ), I learnt that being proactive means being responsible to our lives. In a reactive model, we are conditioned to respond in a particular way to a particular stimulus. In contrast, proactive model states that between stimulus and response, lies our freedom to choose the response.
Habit 2 (Begin with the end in mind) is based on the principle that all things are created twice. There's a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation. The second creation follows from the first, just as a building follows from a blueprint. In our personal lives, if we do not develop our own self-awareness and become responsible for the first creation, we empower other people and circumstances to shape our lives by default.
In Habit 3 (First Things First), I learnt that all our activities can be divided into four quadrants
Quadrant 1 : Activities that are Important and Urgent
Quadrant 2 : Activities that are Important but Not Urgent
Quadrant 3 : Activities that are Urgent but Not Important
Quadrant 4 : Activities that are Not Urgent and Not Important
The ideal to work toward is increasing your time spent in Quadrant II.
In Habit 5 (Think Win-Win), I learnt that most of us base our self-worth on comparisons and competition. We think about succeeding in terms of someone else failing. That is, if I win, you lose. Or if you win, I lose. Life is a zero-sum game. There is only so much pie, and if you get a big piece, there is less for me. People with this type of Scarcity Mentality find it difficult to share recognition and power, and to be happy for the successes of others, especially those closest to them.
Win-win on the other hand, is based on the paradigm that there is plenty for everybody, that one person's success is not achieved at the expense or exclusion of the success of others. Win-win means that agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying.
Habit 5 says 'Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood'. A wise doctor will diagnose before writing a prescription. A good engineer will understand the forces, the stresses at work, before designing the bridge. An effective sales person first seeks to understand the needs of the customer before offering a product. Similarly, an effective communicator will first seek to understand another person's view before seeking to be understood. Until people feel properly diagnosed they will not be open to prescriptions.
In Habit 6 (Synergize), I learnt that 'The Whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. One plus one equals three or more. Two people, creatively cooperating will be able to produce far better results than either one could alone.
Habit 7 (Sharpen the Saw) surrounds the other habits because it is the habit that makes all other habits possible. Sharpen the saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have - you. It means having a balanced, systematic program for the four areas of our lives; physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.
While the book has a price tag, what we learn from this book cannot be valued.
Rating: Summary: Read it so you'll know what everyone is talking about. Review: I don't know if Covey invented the word proactive, but it and other business buzz words are explained in this book. If you are into self-help, you'll enjoy the warm manner that the book is written along with the Carnegie-like anecdotes. The book provides a system to prioritize and organize your personal and business life based on your principles. Keep the book for future reference like a text book if you are serious about applying it to your life; otherwise, get what you can out of it and share it with a fellow employee
Rating: Summary: Excelente guia para toda la vida Review: Este libro nunca se termina de leer, es una constante guia en el desarrollo de nuestras vidas, aporta conceptos que realmente cambian y proyectan nuestras vidas
Rating: Summary: Not for Everyone Review: I'm biased--I've known Stephen Covey's family since they were neighbors in the late 1950s. Even so, Stephen Covey's book has affected me more than any other non-scriptural work I've read. But be forewarned--Covey's work demands a certain humility. There are multiple layers there, and to be effective in drawing value from his work, one must be prepared to do a thorough self-examination. I've seen many people react to this book--and those who say it changed their lives are almost always those who didn't believe they already knew everything
Rating: Summary: Vastly overrated pablum Review: Mormon bromides, old saws. Why all the hype? Work hard. Follow the Golden Rule. You mustoughtshould plan ahead. Duh. It's also a very individualistic, self-centered book. The only worthwhile part is the calendar, but even that lost its appeal when it was marketed in office supply stores as a Big Deal That Will Revolutionize Your Life.
Buy a Bible instead. Cultivate a hobby. Volunteer. Any of these will do you infinitely more good than this mush.
Rating: Summary: Be proactive, buy it, read it, but more importantly, use it. Review: It's a worthwhile book to read. Principles are evident in many places in literature but few books make it so perfectly clear. Habit 1 will take you far in completing the rest of the book, taking control over your life, and will allow you to truly begin with the end in mind. Avoid the quick fixes and start with Habit 1 today. Be proactive
not only in buying this book which you'll read over and over again for renewal but making an impact on other people's lives.
Rating: Summary: "7 Habits" is a "10" Review: This book has been on "Best Seller" lists since its publication. Mr. Covey offers a useful and possible spirituality that you can take with you to every aspect of your life. While not actually a theology, his system is easily integrated into any religious system or philosophy. People find this book useful, because the ideas and the advice are practical and make good sense
Rating: Summary: For everyone, not just business people Review: If you want to know how to improve your friendships and relationships, at work, at home, in life, then this book is for you. Learn where your priorities are and need to be. Gotta read it
Rating: Summary: Here is your guide to personal success! Review: If you want to have quantum changes of improvement in your life, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is a must read. Each habit progressively builds upon the previous one, enlightening the reader with exciting possibilities of personal fulfillment. Let Dr. Covey show you how to make your habits work in your favor
Rating: Summary: A principled, common sense approach to life, relationships Review: Dr. Covey has written, in very understandable language, a lesson on life. I cannot think of a single person who would not benefit from reading this book. The 7 habits are based on principles, not quick-fixes, and common sense as well as life lessons learned through reading and studying the Bible. Developing these 7 habits in you every day life will be a long process and well worth the results. I would recommend this book to everyone who can read and if you cannot read, buy the tapes
