Rating: Summary: New Lead Characters Serve Well and Well Served Review: Tom Clancy changes course and concentrates on John Clark and Ding Chavez rather than Jack Ryan. This is a good thing as Mr. Ryan has gone as far as he can, and Clancy has taken the character about as far as he can. Clark and Chavez, however, have great potential. While this book is nowhere near Mr. Clancy's best--Without Remorse and Clear and Present Danger lead the Clancy canon by far--Rainbow Six delivers a good story. The set-up is plausible--even if the villains and their agenda are a bit far-fetched--but overall, this is a decent political thriller. Like any writer of this genre, Clancy flirts with crossing the line where he lets his politics get in the way of his story. Fortunately, he just flirts with it, stepping back into the realm of good story telling rather than hammering too hard on his Reaganesque version of America as it should be. (This is what ruined Executive Orders.) I hope we hear more from Mr. Clark and Mr. Chavez. The don't have the agenda of Jack Ryan (or Tom Clancy) so we can simply have good stories well told.
Rating: Summary: Predictable!!! Review: Why did I buy this book? Answer, "Tom Clancy has written many books which I enjoyed no end. They could be re-read more than once and still be enjoyable." Sadly Tom Clancy has used up all his credit with this one.It doesn't get off the ground at any point. Although it is a "speed read" it never captures the reader like "Cardinal of the Kremlin" , "Clear and present danger" or "The sum of all fears" did. It hasn't got the "I must read one more page or else..." feeling that his previous books had. It is as predictable as watching paint dry - and you feel just as cheated afterwards. Read "Cardinal of the Kremlin" and remember the good old days, when Clancy still knew how to write.
Rating: Summary: Too wordy Review: When I received this book, my first impression was that it was too big. Upon reading it, I felt as though the editors could have cut the book in half and made it more interesting and less repetitive in its descriptions about the characters and the training. At least we recouped some of its cost with the amount of paper it used.
Rating: Summary: Clancy's loosing it; too political, not clever Review: Clancy's last three books have been very poor. He increasingly injects his stories with his own extreme right-wing political point of view. This becomes very tiring and is not a believable makeup of his characters. The right-wingers are the saviors, anybody else is a cold, bloodthirsty lunatic. How boring. And how often does the reader have to be reminded of what each character's intentions are? Each individual in the book has to repeat how they feel and what they're thinking about three dozen times. In school, this was considered "fattening" for length rather than content. The result in RAINBOW SIX is that the story gets continually bogged down.
Rating: Summary: Stupid plot, but still entertaining! Review: Tom Clancy is the master of the techno-thriller but this book lacks the "techno" of his others. The premise of an international anti-terrorist unit is great but the villains were absurd. With the fall of the USSR and frequent use of middle eastern terrorists, I guess militant environmentalists are the only bad guys left. The book's saving grace are its protaganists, Clark and Chavez. The bio-warfare was done to death in his last book and he needs a new threat to the world. It's good mindless summer reading, but if you're expecting a good "Tom Clancy" novel, maybe you should check out his earlier works (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger). Despite my comments, I'm still the first in line to buy his books!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining-but not the best. Review: The excitement of TOM CLANCY'S books is here, but with some problems. John Clark was missing his passion from his earlier characterization in CLANCY'S books. Ding Chavez was more prominent, but lacking full dimension. While the missions of the unit were exciting, the big mission at the Olympics was a fizzle. I found the main plot lacking the power that CLANCY delivers in his earlier novels. The editor of this book should have spent 6 hours on each page finding the embarassing spelling and grammar errors. These errors could have been corrected by any fan of CLANCY'S. I hope he hires a new one. CLANCY is still one of my favorite authors, and I will eagerly await his next book. This book may just represent a mid-life crisis for CLANCY, but I have faith that he will return to his master-storyteller form soon. STEPHEN KING got side-tracked like this, and maybe success delivers ocassional detours from CLANCY'S top-notch form, only to find his way back to his loyal fan's expectations.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing, Intense, Inseparable until read! Review: I've read numerous Clancy books, and this one is phenominal. I just finished reading several reviews. Those of you who didn't like this book because of its size, go read RL Stine. This book deserved its thickness, because of the plot! Duh! What's wrong with you people? This book was fascinating in the characters. Someone in the reviews griped about Clancy getting too deep with the characters, major and minor. Well, it's called "character devlopment!" Go back to grade school. Clancy put out a definite winner. His plot is up-to-date, and present. Terrorism needs to be battled. This story tells of one man who's smart enough to gather a group of soldiers across the oceans to combat some of the most evil enemies of our time. The dialogue is great! Every time you turn around, you're heading to fight evil. It's packed with suspense. It even has some comedy, and somewhat romantics in parts. It has several genres in one, and it's unpredictable. Those of you who say it's bad because you listened to it...YOU made the mistake. This book was written to be READ not LISTENED to! I highly, highly, highly recommend this book. The characters demonstrate courage, dedication, and unfailing persistence to find out who's behind the rising line of terrorists that threaten to undo mankind. I could go on and on, but I want you to read the book. Fantastic, phenominal, his best yet, and it'll be hard to top in the future, but I'm sure Tom can pull it off! Great job, Clancy, great job. Five stars, without hesitation, and without remorse!
Rating: Summary: Not a bad book, but not a great book either.... Review: There are a number of things to dislike about this book: * the female characters; * the less than tight writing in many spots; and, * the underlying plot (which to me seems outlandish). Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it. It was entertaining and part of the reason that I read is to entertained. I have found trend in Clancy's books over the last fifteen years to be interesting. More and more of his politics have shown through. For example, Jack Ryan's leanings in Debt of Honor and Executive Orders. Clancy has used his popularity as an author to push some of his politic beliefs. Additionally, as the cold war collapsed, he has definitely grapped on to terrorism on a central theme; this is also notable in the Op-Center books. My greatest hope is that Clancy will take the time to write a tighter book next time out. This book just feels like it was hammered out too quickly in spots.
Rating: Summary: predictable and made for tv moviedom Review: early in the book it was easy to see that tom clancy was wriiting for TVdom.....I liked some of the accurate details of the weaponry and the security sequences but it wrote itself........It was apredictable plot...non of the superheroes would be hindered in their goals........traitors and spies were identified early in the plot. I still think clancy has an in somewhere in black ops to have all the dope he has.........I still liked it.....
Rating: Summary: This book is action packed and exciting, worth the read! Review: This has to be one of Clacy's finest novels. The book is packed with details and vivid descripitions. The action is non-stop, the plots are intricate and entertaining. The characters in the plot are likable and add a real edge to the story. The details and the plot makes this book a must read.
