Summary: The decline of Clancy.
Review: Rainbow Six is not one of Mr. Clancy's best works. He uses the same "menace" as the last book. In all his previous books the scenario had some credibility, this does not. The opening chapter action stretches credibility beyond the breaking point. Even the jacket photo of Mr. Clancy is sad. He has on a custom made flight suit with the blue silk scarf, bomber jacket, scrambled egg hat looking like some romantic hero in his own mind. His politics shine through all this by portraying the Sierra Club types as bumbling idiots, referring constantly to Reagan Airport as though he were reminding us of his hero and a general trashing of the enviourmental movement. This will be the last Clancy book I buy. His story line is tired and it would appear, so is he. I'm truly sorry because his early stuff was some of the best novels I've ever read.

Summary: Read something else--
Review: Long, slow and not very interesting. I took the recommendation of other readers and also bought Joe Dalton's latest THE OMEGA MISSILE-- much better. Recommend you do the same.

Summary: "It's like something from a bad movie."
Review: Uggh, I never thought a Tom Clancy book would be so bad. A recycled plot line is only made worse in it's second try.

One of the characters sums it up best when he learns of the sinister environmentalist plot against the world "It's like something from a bad movie." Come on, Tom! Give us a break

Summary: Outstanding
Review: Tom Clancy's most recent book is by far the best. If you don't like Tom Clancy's detail and techincal nature this book ISN'T for you, but for all you Tom Clancy fans out there this book IS! This book's marvelous descriptions put you right in the action. Tom Clancy knows how to write a good and highly addictive book. I read this book in a little under 3 days. I just wish Tom could write 'em faster than i could read 'em. Thats my dream. Bottom Line: Another outstanding book from my favorite writer, Tom Clancy

P.S. I thought the cover picture on the back (Tom Clancy in a flight suit and a patriotic scarf tucked in the collar) was a little cheesy...but hey, no one is perfect.

Summary: A timely tale that should cause every American to think.
Review: I have to admit that I am a Clancy fan. I have read every book he has written, my favorite being Executive Orders. Rainbow Six took a while to grab me but it did grab me. Clancy has a knack for capturing the real "clear and present danger". The plot in Rainbow Six could have just come off of CNN or Fox News.

It's a good read and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Rainbow Six: Clancy's worst book to date...
Review: I was extremely disappointed with Tom Clancy's latest work. It falls short in all areas where he is normally praised.

The dialogue in the book is poorly written. He frequently uses all the names a character has in one brief discussion. After the second or third time it became simply boring to read everyones name.

The level of detail used in R6 is very substandard. Clancy only mildly describes weapons, scenarios and tactics. High intensity encounters are normally over in a few paragraphs.

I can see a reason for this though. In real life these encounters would be over in a matter of seconds, in the best case. It seems awkward from a normally thorough writer.

I also found the plot to be very predictable. Normally you get a general feel for what is going to happen and then are suprised at what takes place. Not in this book.

Two stars may be generous.

Summary: poor production values, but a page turner
Review: When I first read in PC Gamer about Clancy's new book and game about anti-terrorist operations, I was really excited, being an avid fan of the SAS. I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the book in Australia, but when I first saw it, I was disappointed by the bland cover and photocopy- paper quality of the book. Nevertheless, I bought the book in anticipation of a gripping and realistic story as only Clancy could write. I was however, disappointed by the obvious lack of discipline of Rainbow Six members after each operation, in particular the talking to rescued hostages and one of the members smoking a pipe in full view of the TV cameras. It was fairly predictable that the Russian ex-spy Popov would catch on later. Definitely not up to Clancy's usual accuracy on military operations, but it was a page-turner nonetheless.

Summary: Great technologist but not a great pharmacist
Review: I have read all of Clancy's books but I am surprised he is still getting paid by the word. There is WAY too much padding in here about the "tree huggers" motivations, the camaraderie of combat and the need to give those terrorists a good butt kicking. And the pharmacist comment. During the description of the treatment of the human guinea pigs he erred greatly in discussing the dosing of narcotics in two areas. One is the statement that once tolerance to a dosing level is achieved, the dose can be greatly increased with no problems. Wrong!! The patient will still suffer respiratory depression and other adverse effects. And the second point was when he got morphine and Dilaudid mixed up. Dilaudid is the brand name for the narcotic Hydromorphone. And the IV dose of 12mg is not really that high. Maybe Mr. Clancy could use a consultant pharmacist on his next book. I could easily make myself available. The ending tied up much too quickly. The assumption is that the 4 really bad people left disappeared without a trace in the mean old ecological miracle called the jungle. And has Clancy ever heard of Murphy's law? His technological gimmicks never, ever have any problems. Missiles land within cenitmeters of their intended target, bullets dissolve heads and only foreign hostages get killed. And yet when the Irish terrorists depend on technology (to wit-their cell phones) they get blowed up real good. I guess only good guys get good technology.

Summary: Not his best effort, but still Clancy
Review: Too predictable and plodding for Clancy. As usual, excellent character development and attention to all the details needed to thread the story together. But the story just is not plausable. Operational securtity could never be maintained for such a preposterous plot. Disappointing.

Summary: War-Horse Clancy Running Out of Oats?
Review: The episodes of an elite counter-terrorist unit in action make for decent escapist reading. Beyond that, Clancy makes use of an uninspired, all-too-familiar biowarfare system taken directly from his last book. John Clark becomes judge, jury, and executioner at the ending which is at once rushed and trite. There are pages of tangential dialog that can be skipped without being missed, but unfortunately each reader has to discover this individually. In Mr. Clancy's defense (and I am a fan from the first) what does one do for an encore, especially when Jack Ryan is now the President of the United States? To see John Clark become an unprincipled vigilante is disappointing.
