Summary: Quintessential Work
Review: This is biblical fiction at its best, but remember it is fiction. The story of Dinah is based in fact and embellished with fiction and it's incredibly well done. This book engulfed me and I could not put it down. Stunning imagery and well developed characters draw you in. The story moves well and covers a good deal of material. This continues to be on my top ten list of favorites. This is a definite buy not borrow!

Summary: I could not put it down!
Review: The Red Tent is an intriguing piece of work that makes you understand more of what the women of the biblical times went through. Diamant has mastered the skill of creating a "page turner"; the imagery she uses draws you into Dinah's story from the beginning, and will not let you go until the very end, which came much too soon. It makes you feel as though you are walking in Dinah's shoes. Diamant brings Biblical characters to life in a way no other has before.

I am not an avid reader, but I could not put this one down and will read it again someday. I would recommend this book to any women. If you have ever thought about how women used to live, then this book is for you. The Red Tent is a brilliant novel.

Summary: A new angle for the old story
Review: I found this book to be really moving, makes you wonder what kinds of other things may have been really happening in the background of many of the Biblical stories as we know them... also a wonderful story of female relationships... its main detractor is the confusing nature of the names and relationships, which was solved in the edition I have by a family tree in the front cover, but even that was sometimes inadequate.

Summary: The Red Tent
Review: After reading this book, it made me very proud of being a woman. I lent my copy to my mother-in-law and she called me back to tell me how much she loved it. She said it really captured the heart of the mother-daughter relationship.

If you know of any woman that is expecting a child and it's a girl, give this book as a gift. Also, don't read it too quickly- savor every word in it.

Summary: The Old Testament Comes to Life
Review: This was an excellent story. I really enjoyed Diamant's fictionalized account of a woman from the old testament. The details she includes of day-to-day life during this time period reflects a lot of research on the part of the author.

Summary: Superb fiction based on a biblical story.
Review: This book was wonderful. Anita Diamant has written a beautiful tale and made these characters come to life. She is very talented. Those who are angry with her for taking license with a biblical story need to calm down. In the disclaimer she admits it all came from her imagination. Why so much anger? Everyone who reads the bible will come to their own conclusions about the missing pieces. Her writing her conclusion down isn't blasphemous. It's her opinion. It's her bringing those times to life through her eyes. I thought it was a beautiful book. For those of you who are hesistant to read this because you might think it's a book about religion, do be afraid. It is simply a tale about a girl, her mothers, and her life.

Summary: Women Only, Please
Review: Not surprisingly, the male characters in this novel are woefully underdeveloped leaving the reader with a rather lopsided story. I longed to know more about what motivated Jacob, but never got more than a one-dimensional look at him. And his God...barely even gets a mention...rather surprsing given the source material the author was using. Nevertheless, I found this an interesting read that certainly gave me a whole new perspective on the culture and mores of the women in the Bible.

Summary: Good story, but average read...
Review: I have to admit that I had to read this book only because my book club chose it. It's like one of those movies that you have heard so much about that, by the time you get around to see it, it's almost impossible for it to live to expectations.

As a man, it's also a little more difficult to relate to a book that targets a female audience (by the author's own admission). I'm not that well-versed in the Bible and made the same mistake a lot readers have made: to assume that most of the events described "took place" in the Bible and that the author just wrote around them. This is not the case and the author is on record saying that it was not her intention to base her story on "actual" biblical events. However, had it not been for our club discussion, I would have gone along thinking I just learned some things about the Bible.

As a story itself, I thought it was entertaining enough and pretty-well written. But the author's style doesn't grab me enough to read another book by her.

Summary: A Fascinating Look into Another Time and Place
Review: Anita Diamant's The Red Tent is based on a name just briefly mentioned in Genesis. Her name is Dinah, and her story is told in first-person narrative. Much of the beginning is her mothers' tales, and its purpose is to set the scene and tone of the novel. About halfway through an event occurs that sets this novel rolling. It is an absolutely fascinating departure from other novels out there. Diamant's choice to tell the female viewpoint from a minor character is brilliant. I am no biblical scholar, either. You don't even have to be familiar with any of the names in order to enjoy this historical yarn. I Can't wait to see what else Diamant might have in the works.

Summary: You don't need to know stories in the bible to read it...
Review: I was a little hesitant to read it, simply because I kept hearing it was a "woman's book" surrounding "menstruating in a tent". The beginning was a little dull, but stick with it, once you get to know the women, you will live with them throughout this religious era and come to get a perspective of what it would have been like to live in those times. I didn't have any biblical background and was able to follow the story. It is not a "light" read though, if you are a Bridgette Jones/Love story reader, this is not for you.
