Rating: Summary: I didn't think it was possible... Review: ... but once again, Matt Reilly has managed to top himself once again. I've read his four previous novels, and after each one I remember thinking: That's it, there's no way in hell anyone can top that. Well guess what? I was wrong. Scarecrow is, by far, the best Reilly novel, with more action scenes than any of his others. Better still, he chucks the customary first sixty pages of setup and dives right into the good stuff, a forty page gunfight in an abandoned Soviet missle silo- and that's the exposition. Another nice feature of Scarecrow is that for the first time, the story has different settings. While in the first four novels, each story took place in one area- A library, an ice station, the jungle, an Air Force base- Scarecrow has about ten different locations, all over the world. And what about the chase? I guess certain fans might have already figured this out, but for those of you who don't know, every Reilly novel- except for Contest- has featured a spectacular chase sequence, containing some of the vbest action in the whole book. Scarecrow is no different. The vehicle this time around is ultramanly sports cars, including a Subaru WRX rally car, a Ferrari, a Porsche GT-2, and of course, a Lamborghini Diablo. Though the concept of a sports car chase has been used multiple times before by Holywood, this one's a few notches above average. Its absolutly amazing. Read the book and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, Scarecrow is an amazing book, one of the best I've read.
Rating: Summary: Dirk Pitt on steroids Review: Action, action, action. That about sums up this book. There is nothing wrong with this but if you are looking for plot and character development you will not find it here. Basically this is a screenplay for the next Hollywood summer blockbuster. I am not that snooty a reader, I enjoy Cussler (though not as much as I used to), Clancy and the like but this book was a little over the top for me. If you want to try a more realistic thriller check out "A TORIST IN THE YUCATAN" fun read.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: As usual the plot is not what one looks forward to in matthew reilly books rather it is the action. This book has wall to wall action action. If you want a book that is fast paced, and is also is easy to read, read this book.
Rating: Summary: Matt Reilly Version 2.0 Review: Having been a Matt Reilly fan since I picked up a copy of Ice Station in paperback, I was holding my breath when I learned about the release of this book. Having read all of Matt's other books in mere hours, I had to buy this as soon as possible. Of course, I couldn't wait for the American release, and I bought the British version (released around October I think). Anyways, I paid extra to have the book shipped to America. I'm a book junkie; what can I say?I wasn't disappointed. Having suspended my beliefs, I proceeded to read the book in one sitting, even calling my boss and telling him I'd miss work because I was sick. I simply couldn't put the book down. As Matt himself describes the book, it's much faster paced than anything he's ever done. Most of the story-building sequences in Matt's previous books, usually explaining some back story, vanish in this book, consumed by almost non-stop action, something no movie could hope to duplicate. Of the few hundred pages, maybe all but forty were action. Hands down, the book flies from cover to cover. I won't sit and explain the plot, because it can be read in other reviews. Suffice to say, it's standard military fiction: Some lone guy has the skills to save the world. It's not new, but Matt makes it so compelling that you can't help but care about the characters he writes. Matt makes several allusions to his other works (Temple's Superbomb or Ice Station's stealth jet), and he even mixes in a little Star Wars (IG-88 anyone?). Mostly though, it's non-stop action all the way. The book never EVER gets boring, as if you were even actually expecting it to slow down. Not gonna happen. Anyway, this book is hands-down in the top 10 of the best books I've ever read, and that's enough to fill a small-town library. If you're ready to spend a few days sleepless and totally addicted to something, then this book is for you. If you're too scared or have something really important to take care off, then go do that first, because this book won't leave your hands until the last page.
Rating: Summary: You will not be disappointed! Review: Having read all of Matt Reilly's previous novels, it was with great anticipation I awaited the release of Scarecrow. The wait was well worth it. As fantastic as his previous novels were- especially Ice Station and Area 7- Scarecrow blows them away! Not only does the action proceed at a phenomenal pace but Reilly also introduces some supporting characters that were a strong match to Scarecrow and his crew. In the final interview section of his book (CAUTION: Don't even look at it before you finish the story, it contains plot spoilers) Reilly hints that the Black Knight may have his own story. I certainly hope so- his is a fascinating character. Scarecrow certainly has its unbelievable moments as Scarecrow and companions escape one challenge after the next. But, THEY'RE FUN!! So, who cares if they could be 100% plausible. Read this story for the sheer enjoyment of it. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Implausible action adventure Review: Having read other offerings by Reilly, I pretty much got what I expected from "Scarecrow". The book was an easy reading inconceivable thriller in which protagonist Marine Captain Shane Schofield manages to extricate himself from one impossible situation after another. Schofield is imbued with certain superhuman qualities which mark him for extermination.
Schofield is one of fifteen members of a list of people who threaten the grandiose megalomaniacal plans of a group known as Majestic-12(M-12). M-12 is an all male group of some of the most wealthy people on the planet who act as behind the scenes puppeteers controlling world affairs. They have put a bounty of 18.6 million dollars apiece of the heads of the fifteen men to be eliminated. Such a prize attracts an international plethora of bounty hunters.
Schofield and his minions are dispatched on a bogus mission to Siberia which is actually a trap for him. He is surprisingly rescued by an ex-military American bounty hunter named The Black Knight. And so begins an adventure foiling the plans of M-12 to upset the balance of power in the world.
Reilly creates a ruthless villian in Jonathan Killian a heartless manipulative armaments billionaire and the youngest member of M-12. The plot lacks originality and at times borders on ridiculous and might be better served if it was in a comic book format.
Rating: Summary: The horror.... Review: I had the misfortune to read this book while in Prague, after being robbed by fake police and getting a hotel with raw sewage leaking from the bathroom floor drain. Reading this book was like combining those two experiences. The plot is like a fifth-grader trying to top his buddies telling stories in the treehouse; the writing just doesn't get any worse. To say this series aspires to be a video game is not intended as a compliment. If you want to read something to motivate you to get outside during a hurricane, this here's your ticket.
Rating: Summary: Better than any video game your kid likes to play... Review: I handed Scarecrow to my fifteen-year-old son this morning after finishing it last night. We grinned at each other and he grabbed the book and ran off as though I'd given him a box full of treasure. Actually, I did. I have had such fun sharing Matthew Reilly's books with my family and friends, but most of all my son. He loves to snowboard, he loves video games, he loves music -- he's a typical teenager. But this typical teenager will be sitting at the breakfast table tomorrow with his nose in a book, totally absorbed in a story. Best of all, Reilly writes about themes of love and honor and courage. He writes about friendship and loyalty. He writes about these things in a nonstop action book that never loses focus and never drops a single plot thread. A real treasure, indeed.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!!!!!!!WHAT A RIDE Review: I have read all but one of Reilly's books (contest). After reading Ice-Station I was floored. It was non-stop action. Well Scarecrow is even BETTER!From the start of the book it is one awesome gun battle, explosion, car/boat/plane/missle chase after another. Reilly is my favorite author. NOBODY can write a novel the way he can. Caution if you are one of those wanna-be Tom Clancy guys who like to complain about the details "That was all wrong the wxr-89 fires a .6754mm shell not a .6755mm one!" Then this is NOT for you, go read the latest issue of Solider of Fortune. This book is for anyone who enjoys a exciting out of this world story with lots of things blow up and cool weapons. Perfect for the long commute home. The only problem is that it is so good you will read it in hours, leaving you begging for more. PLEASE tell me that the Black Knight will get his own book. Just make sure you read Ice-Station first, then pick this up and enjoy.
