Summary: No way! Did he end this book like he did!
Review: I have read EVERYTHING James Patterson has wrote. Along came a spider and Kiss the girls are untouchable! I love the way Patterson writes with short easy to read chapters, and I can not wait till he finish's this book. HE BETTER FINISH IT! I think this book would have been up there with his best had he kept writting. I loved the ending but it would have been better had it been the end of a chapter not the book! Please don't make us wait a year for the end PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! It's time to tie up all the loose ends in Alex Cross's life. When he let the weasel go without being caught that was almost okay because I expected him to return...now we have two unclosed things along with his personal life in shambles....come on lets get some closure and move on.

Summary: This one did it - No more James Patterson for me.....
Review: I read through the other reviews of this book. Apparently many readers agree with me. We have given James Patterson and Alex Cross many, many chances. I was on the edge of giving up on these books after reading the last Alex Cross. But because of the fine quality of earlier books, I plunged into this last one, Roses are Red. Never again.

It's just the same old thing over and over. A weird serial killer has a personal vendetta against Alex. I could even take another good book about that. But here's the real problem that has displayed itself in so many of the past several books - there is no solution or conclusion to the story lines.

The killer from either 3 or 4 books ago is still around. Alex thought he had gotten him, but it is revealed that he has just killed someone else. So, first of all, we are told that the criminal from a previous case has never really been captured. The story of the relationship between Alex and Christine is also just left hanging. If I was not familiar with the Alex/Christine story from other books, the description of what happens between them would make no sense at all.

Then, in this current book, there are several captures made of people who are thought to be the murderer. Every time a capture is made, the person says "You have got the wrong man". Of course, this being an Alex Cross book, it always is truly the wrong man because the real perpetrator is rarely caught in these stories. He is always free to roam to become the focus of a sequel. The final few sentences of the book supposedly do finally tell who the killer is. But, in my opinion, it was such an unbelievably dumb choice after reading the entire book, it didn't satisfy my curiosity. It just made me mad. And, even this dumb choice of a serial killer is not caught.

After I have invested my time in reading a book, any book, I feel that I deserve a conclusion to most of the plot lines in the story. I do understand about sequels and that sometimes things need to be left hanging to keep the reader interested until the next installment. But these Alex Cross books go too far. The plots are never wrapped up. There is way too much left unsaid. I feel like I have been jerked around by James Patterson. If you lure me into the story, give me some satisfaction by the end of the book.

Maybe in some future book, James Patterson will take all of these loose threads and weave them into one huge and final conclusion. Even if he does, I will not be reading about it. This book was really my last Alex Cross.

Summary: MUCH BETTER THAN HIS LAST 2 BOOKS
Review: Through a friend in the industry I was able to get A REVIEWcopy of 'Roses are Red' And all I can say is thank god Mr Patterson is back! The last two Patterson books I read were not my cup of tea (Cradle and All & black market). I am so glad to have Alex Cross back in action! I won't give away any of the plot but if you liked 'Pop goes the weasle' and 'Kiss the Girls' you will love 'Roses.'

Also recommended: Just finished an interesting thriller: 'A Tourist in the Yucatan'

Summary: Great Surprise Ending But.......
Review: I have read everything written by James Patterson, and while this book is better than his last, it is by no means his best. The story was a bit too much especially when is came to his family - I mean how much more personal drama could he have added to the story. In fact, there was too little suspense regarding what I think was supposed to be the main story and there was way too much family/personal involvement. Between the Christine/Baby Alex storyline and the Jannie storyline, the actual police work got lost in the background. I read his books for the detective/police stories and although the personal side does play a part, it played way too much of a role in this book. The ending, and by that I mean the last few lines, was the best part.

Summary: What a ride...
Review: This book was one of the best suspense novel I have read in a long time. I found myself guessing who was the "Mastermind" all through the book. I most enjoyed the fast pace of this book. It will keep you interested until the last sentence - and you don't want to skip that! If you are a Patterson fan, this book is a good investment in pleasurable reading.

Summary: I should have learned my lesson...
Review: Thankfully, I borrowed this book and didn't have to spend my own money. This is the third James Patterson novel I have read, and each time I swear it will be my last. The problem is this--his stories have the potential to be gripping and exciting, but the writing and plot/character development are SORELY lacking. In this case, Alex's relationship with Christine is pointless, and his daughter's serious illness is trivialized and then forgotten. (As a pediatrician, I can tell you that a brain tumor involves more than a few MRIs, a quick operation, and then boom--you're home from the hospital!) Too many characters quickly come and go, and the reader is given no clues as to the identity of the Mastermind. Part of the fun of suspense thrillers is trying to figure out who the killer is before the detective does. In this case, we are as clueless as Alex until the very end. Also, we are never given any hints about the motivation of the Mastermind. I feel I must also comment on Mr. Patterson's writing style in general. It is annoying! It reads like a high-school kid's novel. WAY too much use of italics, too many "hip" pop culture slang references ("KFC and Mickey D's", Tommy Hilfiger, etc.). I would be interested to know what African-American readers think of all the "black slang" and African-American culture references. To me it seems contrived, that this is what Mr. Patterson imagines a cool black detective and his family would say and think. I also hate it that the chapters are generally 2 pages long. It is distracting--like he is putting in spaces for commercials in a TV movie. There is a big difference between a novel that is a page-turner because the story is exciting and compelling, and one that is a page-turner because there's not much on each page. If you are looking for high-quality suspense/thriller novels, I suggest the books of John Sandford, Michael Connelly, and Iris Johannsen. THIS WAS MY LAST JAMES PATTERSON NOVEL. I SWEAR!! (Now let's see if I stick to that!)

Summary: Cross's light extinguished
Review: I waited with eager anticipation for the arrival of a new Cross novel. "Roses Are Red" is possibly one of the biggest disappointments of the year. The writing bordered on junior high school essays. There was little character development...just plain shallow. So much for anticipation!

Summary: Good, but not as good
Review: As I have with all James Patterson novels, I burned through this one in about a day. A definite page-turner. I would recommend the book to Alex Cross fans. If you have not yet read an Alex Cross book, I would read Kiss The Girls or Along Came a Spider first. Unlike other customers, I did not like the ending. It came out of nowhere and didn't come close to matching the intensity of the rest of the book.

Summary: Not a bad way to pass a gloomy day.
Review: Let's see. This is the first James Patterson novel I have read. It was a pretty good, extremely fast paced read. I was a little skeptical reading first person form (which I am not fond of), but Det. Alex Cross, was quite an interesting character. This is a sequel of sorts to a previous novel "Kiss the Girls", in which the good guy, Det. Alex Cross is crime solving again. I don't know if any characters other than Cross were in Patterson's other novel, since I have not read it yet. (But I plan to)

In this suspenseful drama, there is a lunatic out on the loose in the DC area. He is called the Mastermind. He truly is masterful, because he leaves no clues and is meticulous about everything he does. His reasons are understood by no one. He definitely enjoys the killing and preying on of innocent people. Nothing he does adds up to Det. Cross and the FBI. We are swept into a world of crime, where nothing makes sense. I was on edge wanting to know what will happen next. And believe me, some of you will be shocked by the outcome. (although I had my suspicions)

This book was better than I expected. I was a little annoyed with the page and a half chapters (125 chapters in a 300 page book,is a little extreme), but that seems to be Patterson's writing technique. He is a good author, and I suggest giving him a try.
