Rating: Summary: Skipping this book Review: The story revolves around the Kranks, a married couple, that decides to "skip Christmas" and instead take a cruise. They are fed up with the excessive spending and trivial gatherings that are associated with Christmas. With there 20-something daughter being away for the first time ever, it provides them with the perfect opportunity. The problem with the story is every character is developed into unlikeable, one-dimesional characters. By the time the reader is suppose to feel any emotion or sympathy for any of them, they are so unlikeable that the reader doesn't care what happens. Grisham's style is very simplistic and basic, reminiscent to Hemmingway. However, deep symbolism does not accompy his style. It's a very easy to read and the story's lesson is a very predictable "Christmas" resolution. Just don't read this book for anything more.
Rating: Summary: Good Reading Review: I really enjoyed this book because it was very comical. I loved how the characters in the book had figured that since their only daughter had left home that they would not celebrate Christmas, and go on a cruise instead. I didn't care for how annoying their neighbors were by trying to make them participate in the neighborhood decorating committee that takes place every year, but in spite of everything when their daughter decides to go home for Christmas and bring her fiance with her, then the neighbors all pitch in to help them put everything together for her return. I really enjoyed it and would recommended that everyone read this one.
Rating: Summary: Delightful - A new side to John Grisham Review: Have you ever thought of skipping Christmas altogether because of all the commercialism? I certainly have. Not his usual intense style, this book is delightful light reading from John Grisham, and thoroughly enjoyable from cover to cover. Well worth the price, and a great book to have handy for a day you're rained-out or snowed-in.
Rating: Summary: Thinking about Skipping Christmas? Review: Thinking about skipping Christmas? Not exchanging gifts? Not addressing cards and writing notes to people during the holidays just to keep in touch? Tired of endless decorating and buying calendars and fruitcake and candy and on and on and...........?? When Luther Krank added it all up he learned he spent $6,100 on Christmas and didn't have a lot to show for it. So........ With his daughter in Peru with the Peace Corps for the coming winter and this being the first for just him and his wife alone he thought about skipping Christmas by going on a cruise in the Caribbean. He gets his wife excited. Nora and Luther Krank patronize a tanning booth in preparation for their trip. They diet to lose weight for their trip. They look at brochures. They buy clothes for the cruise. However, people around the Kranks aren't excited. Word spreads fast about the Kranks' decision. First surprise, then shock and disbelief. Neither his co - workers, the policemen and the scouts who knock on his door selling items for Christmas for worthy causes, and his neighbors (did the people down the street orchestrate the sending of blank unsigned Christmas cards with Frostys on them from far away places?) and the Kranks' daughter remembers Christmas with her family and the way her family has always celebrated the holiday... With an unexpected phone call the Kranks' idea of skipping Christmas is threatened. Read what happens...
Rating: Summary: Quick enjoyable read Review: I really enjoyed this book. You understood where each character was coming from, lessons were learned, and the ending was great. Take it on a holiday.
Rating: Summary: A funny, quick read Review: Non-pretentious. Laugh out loud towards the end. Sure to be a 90 minute TV movie next Christmas.
Rating: Summary: What a change in storyline, refreshing Review: John Grisham's Skipping Christmas is nothing what I had expected. This is not a classic Grisham storyline, but enchanting and a good quick read.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: For the first time since he published his first book 13 years ago author John Grisham has released two books in the same year and neither have anything to do with Law, the subject that he frequently writes about. This novel is very short as it has about 200 pages or less is a pleasant little diversion that doesn't require any ounce of thought. Luther and Nora Krank usually through the biggest party of the year at Christmas time, but this year things are different. Their daughter Blair has decided to become a missionary worker in a foreign country and won't be coming home for the holidays. Luther decides this year that he and his wife shall go on a cruise for the first time in their lives. Things get complicated when a series of unexpected events threaten to derail their holiday plans. Like most holiday movies you can tell what is going to happen long before you reach the end but it doesn't really matter. It's purely a fun story that Grisham had fun writing. Now he can get back to writing the REALLY good stuff.
Rating: Summary: Too cute Review: Skipping Christmas was a nice little story that I thought was just a little too cute. It was predictable and is written from the point of view that everyone except "the nice jewish couple down the street" is a Christian who simply must get into the Christmas Spirit. Sorry, I'm sure many people will think this is a great story, but it just didn't do it for me.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: Could hardly believe this piece of fluff was writting by John Irving! The only reason it gets any stars from me at all is that I have always been a big fan of his.
