Rating: Summary: Droll and light effort from John Grisham! Review: I was so used to reading books from Grisham about government conspiracies and enormous court cases -- not to mention the titles that begin with "The" -- that it hadn't occurred to me that Skipping Christmas would be the light and heart-warming comedy that it is.Having waved good-bye to their daughter at the airport the day after Thanksgiving, Luther and Nora Krank have a great idea: why not skip the hustle of shopping, cooking and decorating this year and go on a cruise instead? And so, the Kranks decide to boycott Christmas altogether -- to the dismay of their neighbors, who now see Luther as Scrooge. A hilarious tale of how the Kranks try to avoid the cheerfulness and holiday excitement of their annoying neighbors begins. We've all wished we could skip Christmas -- after all, who wouldn't trade the hustle and reckless spending over a nice soothing Caribbean cruise? I know I certainly would! Who knows? I'll probably trade Christmas in favor of a nice vacation next year! And I don't have to worry about the neighbors interfering!:-) Read this gem! You'll be impressed with John Grisham's comedic effort. He ought to write these more often.
Rating: Summary: Not like Grisham and may become a classic Christmas story Review: I have read all of Grisham's novels -- even before he was famous. I saw a different dimension of this author when I read A PAINTED HOUSE. SKIPPING CHRISTMAS is another novel that doesn't seem to have been written by Grisham. First, SKIPPING CHRISTMAS is hilarious. I caught myself laughing aloud. I didn't think Grisham had much of a sense of humor, but this book shows it. Second, the characters are vividly written. The reader will witness quick but coherent character development. The characters seem too real. I am willing to bet Grisham based the personalities on people he has known. This is a charming short story. In hundred years, people will continue to read it and laugh. It surely will become a Christmas Classic!
Rating: Summary: different, still the best. Review: don't look at the other reviews that have zero stars. although this is a different kind of book that john grisham has written, it is still the best and worth reading at christmas!
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry, I really tried Review: While the premise was great, I ended up putting the book down in disgust. I genuinely enjoyed the concept, two people vetoing the commercialism, opting instead to enjoy a holiday vacation. Great idea right? Wrong. I found that the characters suffered from a lack of spine. Why would anyone hide behind curtains and doors to escape from carolers? Escaping to the basement to avoid yet another round of neighbors persons trying to get donations, when a simple no would suffice. The final straw for me was when Carol, the main characters wife, forgoes all her plans to appease a daughter who is quickly flying back to the states after a month. Discussing this among my friends we agreed unanimously that we would have told the daughter to enjoy her stay in the house, we are going on a cruise. Sorry Mr. Grisham. I've enjoyed many of your books, and will continue to look for your titles, but can't in good faith put this on my shelf. I will be skipping this title for Christmas.
Rating: Summary: This is a used book???? Review: The seller shipped in record time, book was in excellent condition, looked brand new. Price was almost 1/2 retail. Great place to shop, will always look here first before I buy again. Kansas City, MO
Rating: Summary: Ok for an airplane book Review: This book works if you need something to read on a plane trip from Florida to Ohio. It held my interest to an extent. However, I got the feeling he knocked this one off in about the time it takes to type it. It takes about 3 minutes to figure out his daughter is coming home for Christmas. Wait for the paperback.
Rating: Summary: You Don't Have to Be A Scrooge to like... Review: I come from a totally modern dysfunctional family & we are all adults now. I like the Holiday/Christmas season,But not the getting together part and trying to live through the "falseness" of the moods about you. I believe if something does not work, one should change-instead of living the ritual(s). I love this book because of it's relish on possibilities of change. The main character, Luther, is not being mean or acting like a scrooge, but he runs into those who oppose his new "Skipping Christmas" wishes for this year. As the book gets more into the theme his wife, Nora,is jumping right on the band wagon to join him - with delight. I won't say anymore; it might give too much of the book away. It's a MUST READ!!It was like reading a breathe of fresh air.
Rating: Summary: A true modern Christmas classic Review: This book was delightful. Great light reading and trust me you won't be able to put it down. It makes the reader think "what if". If the world around you gets used of you doing thing and you decide to change; in someways you have messed up a part of their world as well. That's what I loved about this story. All the years I just wanted to skip all the aspects and commericalism of Christmas and totally forgetting the real true meaning of it.
Rating: Summary: Another Tale of "Scrouge" Review: Grisham describes the life of a married couple deciding to skip out on the annual Chrismas festivities. The book is wonderfully written and redefines the idea of the meaning of Christmas. This is a heart-warming novel written for those who love the traditional holiday season (and those who love to laugh-out-loud as well).
Rating: Summary: interesting...but i've read better Review: The book had a great beginning and good characterization. The middle of the book when the plot developed kept me interested. The end was disappointing, however, and seemed to negate the whole point of the story. I wish they had continued as planned. Also, the whole marriage thing surprised me as well, and I didn't like that either. Grisham had a good idea at the beginning, but his twist of plot at the end made the book a disappointment.
