Rating: Summary: A fun book! Review: Who hasn't wanted to skip Christmas? I know I have. This is a must read for the holiday season. This book hits the nail on the head...Most of our holiday traditions are meant to make other people happy, not ourselves. I truly enjoyed this book.
Rating: Summary: Not his usual Review: This book is not one of Grisham's usual. It's very light and quick reading. It's funny and a joy to read at this time of year....Highly Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Irritating & predictable, but kind of sweet at the very end Review: I like John Grisham, and, while not deep or probing, his stories are fast paced, interesting, and entertaining. Also, he usually does a pretty good job of character development. This short book had a couple of humorous lines and a lot of annoying situations. You already know from other reviews that it is predictable but who cares if it's fun along the way. This is not fun! In fact, it is so often irritating that I had to frequently get away from it. This 177-page book took forever to finish. Luther and Nora have so little respect for each other that the prospect of them spending 10 days on a cruise ship together is horrifying. The daughter, Blair, is simply a self-centered spoiled brat, even though she is described as being "loved by everyone." The neighborhood sounds like a place that anyone with more than a two-digit IQ would run from. None of it makes sense. The final (and predictable) act in the book is sweet, however, but definitely not worth the work.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas is a very entertaining read! Review: I so enjoyed reading this one and I am not an avid fan of John Grisham. This was funny and I couldn't wait to get back home, from my Christmas shopping sprees, to pick it back up again. I didn't want it to come to an end. I dare anyone to read this and not be just a little bit tempted to do the same thing that Luther wanted to do. I'm still considering it myself for next year. Don't hesitate to buy this one and get an extra one to give as a present. It's good for many laughs and the story wraps up well. Just a little Christmas humor there. Grisham may want to consider writing comedy for a while. I read somewhere that odds are this one will be a made-for-televison movie by next year. Merry Christmas readers!!
Rating: Summary: Skipping Grisham! Review: OK. This HAS to be the WORST book ever. Luther and his wife Nora (wealthy Arian Christians) have decided to skip Christmas. Their neighbors torment them, shun them, vandalize their lawns and gossip all over town just because 2 people decide to take a cruise rather than decorate the house with a stupid Frosty the Snowman. It's not funny, and not believable. The leader of the neighbors represents Hitler, his kid, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, (practically burning a cross on the lawn of this couple). And Luther and Nora are no better. When they find out their precious daughter Blair is coming home for Christmas with her new Peruvian boyfriend all they can think about is "How dark is his skin!" and when they finally meet him, "He wasn't dark at all! At least two shades lighter than Luther himself!" As if this is a cause of celebration, or even a basis of judging someone. And to make it even more disgusting, Luther and Nora spend the entire book going to a tanning salon to DARKEN THEIR SKIN FOR THEIR CRUISE!!! John Grisham, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!?? You owe me money, Mr. Grisham. I am offended. Please ship this book. It hurts.
Rating: Summary: Zzzzzzzzzz. . . Review: I fell asleep in the express line on page 11. Needless to say, I passed on buying it.
Rating: Summary: The real meaning of Christmas Review: I bought this book because it was John Grisham. I loved this book because it was about all of us. I cried in the last chapter. It made me look forward to Christmas this year and I even cut back a little on the materialism. I've passed it along to my mother so that she can feel better about this season. Perfect timing.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I have been a John Grisham fan for years. I have every book he has written but this the best. It is a quick read here in the hustle and bustle of Christmas leaving you with lasting thoughts and bringing back memories of calmer, quieter times when all we had to do was wait for Santa. The humor made for out-loud laughter and the somber moments brought a tear or two. There truly is a reason for tradition with a few less extremes.
Rating: Summary: The Reindeer Brief Review: Sorry John, but if an aspiring writer had approached Doubleday with this novella, it would never have been published. Skipping Christmas is a lightweight effort at best--mildly amusing, but seemingly ripped off the word processor in a hurry. The premise is cute, if not original: Children have left home, and parent decides to avoid the Christmas rush and take a cruise instead of spending a small fortune on gifts, cards, and Christmas parties. But child announces a surprise return home, bringing a friend....Hey, wait a minute, that's the plot from an old Muppets Christmas Special! After reading Skipping Christmas I resented the "star power" that dominates the current book market. If you're inclined to cut down on Christmas spending, don't fork over (money)for this book.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I laughed...and isn't it a wonderful life to be able to do that. It wasn't a deep story, it wasn't rocket science, it was just a fun book to read. And couldn't we all recognize some of the materialistic rituals that have become a part of Christmas that we all despise and wish we could say "No, we're skipping Christmas this year". I may do that next year...and hopefully I make the cruise.
