Rating: Summary: A wonderful book about boys and a dream Review: As the father of a son who learned how to fly at the age of 14, and who later became a Naval Aviator, I saw both myself and my son in this book. At the age of 72 I have started flying again and should have my certificate within a month. You are never too young or too old to fly if you can still pass the FAA 3rd class medical.
Rating: Summary: A great book for people interested in flying! Review: I am a 12 year old boy and love anything dealing with airplanes and flying. I found this book fascinating and hard to put down. I loved reading about the Buck boys' adventures as they flew across the country. I also found most interesting the story of how they rebuilt the Piper Cub. The people they met during their travels i.e. airport geezers, mechanics, made the story seem so real to me. This story is not just about flying, however; it is also about father/son relationships. This book does contain a lot of bad language, so it may not be right for everyone. Overall, this is a high-flying piece of literature! Alex Petkofski
Rating: Summary: I literally could not put it down! Review: This is one of the few books I've ever read in one sitting. I was planted in my chair for almost 6 hours while I read this superb account of the two Buck boys and their trek across the U.S. in a PA-11 Cub. As the cliche goes, "I laughed, I cried..."
Rating: Summary: This shoe fits a non pilot as well as a seasoned veteran Review: My wife brought this book to me out of good luck. "Looks like something you might like"-- couldn't put it down. I am fasinated by planes, but I found myself thinking about situations with my family and friends from the past to the future. Amazingly entertaining,,, spiritual not technical. should be 6 stars..
Rating: Summary: Entralling story-Got the book 12/25 and finished it on 12/26 Review: This book is more about family and relationships than it is about flying. Rinker Buck is a talented author who tells a great story. The book is full of hilarious tales which are probably so funny because they are true.
Rating: Summary: Nostalgic and thought provoking Review: A well written memoir of an incredible journey. Kern and Rinker Buck, teenage brothers fly across country without realizing the enormity of their undertaking. And after the completion of their journey they reflect on just how easy it was. While there were certainly hazards and risks, their experience reminded me that any task, when broken down into manageable pieces, can be accomplished.Rinker Buck's view of his father and brother never seem to be truly resolved. I wonder if only Kern would tell his side how much more fullfilling this already fullfilling book would be. Thanks Rinker for writting this memoir. It has inspired me as a father of two boys to tread carefully on their hearts and sole. Interestingly , I see much of you and Kern in them. The biggest shock I got out of this book is the unsettling feeling at looking back at something which happened so long ago, and realizing that I am close in age to Rinker. His book makes me wish I had known them and somehow shared in their experience.
Rating: Summary: Great book, but profanity was a problem Review: I had originally listened to the book over the radio, and enjoyed the story. It was an exciting and enlightling adventure to listen to the book. I bought the book from Amazon for my mother to read. However, she was deeply offended by the profanity used in the book. The radio reader had edited out the profane parts. I was also going to buy this book for another elderly friend, but my mother explained that I shouldn't as our 85 year old friend wouldn't be as open minded as she was about the profanity (Ha!). So, I recommend this book highly for the open minded readers. I do wish the book came out in a rated G version so I could share it.
Rating: Summary: Enthralling acount of flying and passage to manhood Review: I found this book to ouch a deep personal place. The writing was beautiful anf the th story riviting. At one time flyoing but it touches a place that many of us have visited. i nly wish I had done the same flight with my younger brother It ranks with "West with the Night" for me for shear writing
Rating: Summary: A great tale well told! Review: I have not enjoyed a book more in the last ten years. There were passages that made me laugh so hard I fell off the sofa, and other sections that made me cry for their poignancy. This was a truly amazing story of a remarkable odyssey by two unique, yet ordinary brothers. The description was elegant and efficient, the characters well drawn, and the story flowed. I'm afraid my wife may not forgive me for the time I stole at a family reunion to finish this great book. I look forward to more books by this author, and wholeheartedly recommend this one!
