Rating: Summary: Sex, Drugs, and Violence Review: Excellent book, I've read it twice already and it's still good. If you live in the Chicago, IL area you can really get into the book and know exactly what street corners they're talking about. If you're only going to read 1 book this year, this one should be it.
Rating: Summary: Tearful Review: It's a shame that all of us that give this book a 5 star is because we just seen are lives flippling page by page that is why it is so hard to put down. I cryed 3 times in this book felt the same pain little loco did as he seen his family and friends being killed right in front of him just like I have seen I have been up to 10 funerals in 1 summer including my younger brother shot in the face by a Cobra. Thank You from the unspoken. It's great to know our stories are out there. Welcome to our world. Artesian / Schubert
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book Review: This book was fantastic. I too was in the ALKQN and completely understood what he was feeling and going through. You won't be able to put this book down once u start reading it. This is the best book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: THIS IS REALITY Review: I used to live in Latin King Territory as a child. I remember the graffiti, the colors, seeing kids that I once played with now dying for the new families they found, as opposed to the ones they were born into. This book reminds me of those times and it though hurts my heart to reminisce and relate, I know why these things happen...For anyone from the outside who wonders "Why would anyone want to join a gang?" this is a must. You cannot judge what you cannot understand. This book will help.
Rating: Summary: my bloody life Review: This book was pretty good...i recommended that people read this. I think adults should let there little kids read this to see how gangs act and stuff like that.
Rating: Summary: Boriqua Review: This is the best book in the world. It gave me info about my hood I never new. Thanks Raymundo Sanchez.
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: Enrique Aldrete P.3 3/31/03 The characters in this novel are very believable and very interesting. I did not have a favorite or I did not dislike any of them, the author seemed to be telling the story with feeling or as if he was there. The main character seems to be the one telling the story in which he speaks of his life. The author holds an interest in the reader by writing in events similar to real life. For example the main character gets "jumped" which is similar to gangs in our time. Holding the reader in a suspenseful thrill. It really captures the main character's point of view. Certain scenes were the main Character and his friends fight, kill, shoot, drink, smoke, etc; typical gang activity that drives the main character to act violent or hostile. In one scene, a girl jumps in front of the main character and is shot, and killed. The next day most people see him as a coward because he did not rake the shoot! So far I am not currently finished with the story, so I honesty cant say that I would change a thing. In the chapters that I have read, I would not change a single thing. The book captures my attention and keeps me in a reading status, so I would not change anything, like a suspenseful thriller it keeps you at the edge of your seat, very well written. If you have the same life as the main character, then yes you can learn from it, I so far can say yes I did learn from it, yet I am not moved by it or I would change my ways. One main fact that reads, "We are the life we choose". In many ways it does make sense. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone, because it speaks the truth of a certain lifestyle, which most people will not agree with because of violence or crimes.
Rating: Summary: Reymundo Sanchez's Bloody Life....... Review: This book is a popular read among Chicago readers. It is about a youth who comes from a troubled family background, joins the Latin Kings (street gang), and is shaped by his experiences with crime, violence, drugs, identity issues, and leaves the gang. What the author wrote, regarding the 1980s in Chicago, I would say is credible. It is an accurate picture of what Chicago was like in the 1980s and all the gang violence. It is also a sad reality of how some people fail to adopt new rules of survival and how difficult it is for many communities to bring about social change in making it safer and more humane to live in their respective neighborhoods.
Rating: Summary: The "Unknown" World Review: I read this book while married to a "brother". The life "Reymundo Sanchez" depicts is hauntingly accurate and movingly profound. If you are associated with gang life in any way--through socioloy or criminology studies, life in the streets, or the friend or relative of a person you believe is involved in the gang culture, this book is important. It is not the sterile result of years of academic research, but a chronicle of what life is really like in "los calles", especially in Chicago. Please read this memoir.
Rating: Summary: Deja Vu Review: This book was frighteningly reminiscent of my own past. Whereas I cannot say that I had the exact similar upbringing as Hermano Sanchez, I can say that I went through many of the same trials and pitfalls. 15 years after this book's setting I had made the same fateful choice to join the Latin Kings. And, almost like reading a diary about myself, this book described events that I had only heard about through street myths and legends; this book showed the same "cannabalistic" cycle that happens to Latino youth in Chicago; and, ultimately, this book describes the painful start of catharsis that hits everyone who tries to walk away. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is between 9 and 18 years old. The book reads well for that age group, and it paints a chillingly real world about ganglife and what it really does to people. I want to thank Mr. Sanchez for putting to paper his experiences; and also for helping me put my own demons into perspective.
