Rating: Summary: e-rpg Review: Excellent book for using rpg with a browser, easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this book
Rating: Summary: Cover to cover on the plane back from COMMON. Review: I bought the book at COMMON in San Diego, and read it from cover to cover on the plane back to Nashville. This is a great book, not only for those of us who are interested in conducting e-business with RPG, but also for those new to API programming. Brad gives some great examples of how to use API's. Brad also includes excellent code examples showing how to write sub-procedures, a boon to the novice RPG programmer. So if you are an old hand at RPG and need an e-commerce solution, or an RPG newbie looking for those hard to come by concept examples, look no further than e-RPG.
Rating: Summary: My Experience with E-RPG Review: I gave the book five stars for the following reasons:1. Mr. Stone gave a step by step approach to setting up the as/400 for web-to-400 applications. I knew very little about Http servers and what was involved in the setup. 2. Mr. Stone gave good, working, examples of code. There are so many authors that neglect this. If you are under a deadline as many of us are, we need working examples in new technology to build our apps. on. 3. Even though I am from a technical background, I feel that anyone with the smallest amount of AS/400 and ILE programming can use this book to begin programming for the web. Thanks!
Rating: Summary: Did the author write all these positive reviews? Review: I had great hope for what what I could learn from this book. But it's mostly on and on about little useful how to stuff. At COMMON recently I strolled past the (new publisher cause they said the original went Bankrupt) publisher's booth and they were joking about writing online reviews and testimonials! They must not have known I was there. I looked over his new book hoping it would address the important stuff but it's wasn't much better and it's too expensive to make this mistake again. If it's the boss's money what the heck. If it's your money then keep looking!
Rating: Summary: Did the author write all these positive reviews? Review: I have 2 words for you YEA ! and THANKS !. You have renewed my faith in the AS/400. I have been a RPG programmer since 1985. Over the years I have been fearful that PC's and the Web would take over. I am so glad to see that is not the case. I have been through two of your books, e-RPG building AS/400 Web Applications with RPG and Stone on CGIDEV2. They have been very helpful in allowing me to keep my career heading in the right direction. (no more night sweats about my nephews learning HTML and taking over my job)

Rating: Summary: Will have you coding E-RPG in a few short Weeks Review: I have been a straight forward RPG III, RPG IV, and RPG IV(ILE) on the AS400 since 1989. I have NEVER looked at HTML code till I pick up this Book (Sept 18 2000) and Now I have a basic foundation for writing my own in-house Web Appellations for the company I work for. His Book is straight forward and easy to read and understand. We do not have a AS400 system Admin and I did not have any problems. But if you really want to get hot and heavy in to it, after you read this book pick up a good HTML and JavaScript book. All in all a very good book. I would recommend this book to any RPG programmer.
Rating: Summary: Good, but could be better Review: I have mixed reviews about this book. I had alot of good information, but still left me with many unanswered questions. The main problem with this book is that he only shows you one way to do things. There's more than one way to display a web page, but he only shows you the dynamic approach. Which is fine, if you have small web pages to load. What if you want to store your pages externally and you want to use Front Page to create your pages. There is no mention or consideration for this. He never mentions the fact that you can redirect the browser to an external page and not have to build it in the RPG pgm. Also he only shows you the Javascript approach for a shopping cart and cookies. Well, what if you want to use RPG for this instead. He doesn't even mention the fact of using the "HTTP_COOKIE" environment variable for cookies. Also, There was not enough elaboration regarding server configuration. It's a good starter book, but you will quickly outgrow it as I did.
Rating: Summary: Get up and running with eRPG Review: I highly recommend this excellent book. Thank goodness for Brad Stone who can transmogrify the arcane into the understandable! This book covers everything from setting up an AS/400 as an HTTP web server to creating a complete storefront, writing all of the CGI in eRPG. Brad manages to provide a complete education about the web, including HTML and JavaScript examples. Best, of course, is that he shows that all you really need for e-commerce is our favorite HLL--RPG. If you've been waiting for a good reason to learn ILE concepts, or to learn to utilize built-in APIs, this is really the book for you. Brad will gently lead you into modular program design using ILE. He also provides source for API wrappers, and explanations for their use, which makes it a breeze to get your web site up and running. Go Brad Go!
Rating: Summary: Good job on e-RPG Review: I received Brad's book one day and had it half read by the next. It is well written, very meaty, and surprisingly easy to read. I highly recommend it.
