Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: A well written endeavor that provides insight into the lives of women who would not allow any obstacle to deter them from reaching their goals. It really made me appreciate what these women endured and the footholds that they have established for other women to follow.
Rating: Summary: Finally Women Mentors Review: After reading this book I learned a lot I can use in my own life. These women were doing things 30 years ago that we take for granted today. It really helped me to appreciate the work done by the first group of women to break through glass ceiling. The point of the book is to have some heroes and role models share some of their stories over a cup of coffee. The stories are conversational, warm and friendly and so inspirational. I felt as if I just had a cup of coffee with l8 of my best friends. Thanks Ms. Vrato. This book needed to be writte.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book For Women, About Women Review: As a practising lawyer I was surprised to read the incredible stories of these women and learn the obstacles they faced developing their careers, when they were pretty much alone in their profession. This book is not 18 biographies, but instead 18 inspirational chapters on women who have made it just a little bit easier for other women to pursue their career choice whether it be as a lawyer or other profession. This book makes a great gift for anyone who wants to inspire another female starting out in the business world.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Book Review: As a woman lawyer, I found the Counselors to be inspiring. It was wonderful to read about woman who faced many of the frustrations that I have faced in my career, but did not give up and continued to use their legal skills to help those around them. I thought their advice was particularly helpful. The book is easy to read and fascinating. I highly reccommend it!!
Rating: Summary: We Can Change the World. Review: Author Elizabeth Vrato asked 18 recipients of the prestigious Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award what they would like to share with young women just beginning their law careers. In "The Counselors: Conversations with 18 Courageous Women Who changed the World," these 18 women share their stories; from family relationships to crusades that changed laws of the United States. Each woman recognized for her exceptional contribution, not only to the field of law, but to our quality of life. In his foreword, Bill Clinton said, "Just as the women in this book were empowered by the efforts and example of those who came before them, a new generation will be inspired and encouraged by the spirit and achievements of this remarkable group."Included: Lynn Hecht Schafran, an expert who has devoted most of her career to educating judges. Lynn Hecht Schafran, director of the New York-based National Judicial Education Program. Patricia Schroeder, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts and Intellectual Property. Louise Raggio, still practicing law at age 81, is considered a "pioneer in marital and family rights. Jamie Gorelick. former U.S. Deputy Attorney General, current Fannie Mae Corporation Vice Chair, and former General Counsel of the Department of Defense. Also: Sandra Day O'Connor, Maureen Kempston Darkes, Margaret Hilary Marshall, Elaine Jones, Herma Hill Kay, Nancy Davis, Drucilla Ramey, Janet Reno, Joan Dempsey Klein, Patricia Wald, Joyce Kennard, Antonia Hernandez, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Norma L. Shapiro. This isn't heavy reading; the chapters are short, yet each sentence made an impact on me. And why not, these are the words of those destined to become the immortals. The American Bar Assoc. Commission on Women in the Profession established the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award in 1991 to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women lawyers. This award honors outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence within their area of specialty and have actively paved the way to success for other women lawyers. Cammy Diaz A@L

Rating: Summary: Getting Personal Review: Each chapter of 'The Counselors' provides an insightful discussion with a woman who has forged her way through a traditionally male field. The reader learns not only the woman's resume, but also her personal thoughts on her struggles, successes and failures. Vrato is a talented author and 'The Counselors' is extremely well-written. I would recommend this book not only to the established professional woman who can relate to the Counselors' stories, but also to young women just starting out in their careers as an inspiration for their professional lives ahead. This book is well worth the read and (in light of the topic and format) would make an excellent graduation gift.
Rating: Summary: Perfect gift for the graduation season Review: I decided to make "The Counselors" my standard graduation gift for cousins, the daughters of friends, and students this year. I have bought people Dr. Seuss's "Oh, The Places You'll Go" in the past, only to learn that it was the second or third copy they had been given! The Counselors has the right spirit and the right content for graduation, deciding the direction to take and tackling new challenges.
Rating: Summary: The Real World Review: I enjoyed reading about what some really prominent women have to say about their work and about other things that matter to them--The stories were entertaining, sometimes outrageous--I liked it as pop culture chatting and as history--Truth is stranger than fiction! Plus there were some things presented that I think I can use going forward.
Rating: Summary: mentoring for the masses Review: I found reading this book to be transforming. I have a big picture perspective of my career and my life over the decades to come because of the wit and wisdom provided in these conversations.
