Rating: Summary: I found some mentors...and they found me... Review: I found some mentors in this terrific book. I learned about the book when I was buying a couple videos and saw a cross-reference to this book, which was a great idea (to lead me to this book) because I had not heard about it. SO this book found me, and I'm glad it did. I can't imagine a woman not liking this book and taking away from it something that you can use. Very entertaining and upbeat. I don't consider myself to be a "feminist," but I wouldn't call this a feminism book--that sounds too political for what this is. The Counselors is stories from impressive people who just happen to be women who are the first or second person to do the job they do, what they have to say about it, what they wish they knew sooner, that sort of thing. If you think you might want to read it, I'd say give it a chance and read it. It won me over.
Rating: Summary: The Counselors: Conversations With 18 Courageous Women... Review: I found The Counselors to be an approachable and personal vehicle for learning about 18 (potentially intimidating) women within a single volume. I particularly like it because of its conversational style. I have read biographies of some of the women included in this book (and enjoyed them). I found that this book adds to the feminist discourse by presenting a new perspective that speaks to readers like myself and also to those who are just becoming interested in law, women's studies or government. I would recommend this to readers already privileged enough to be a part of an academic discussion of feminism and to less traditional audiences who are looking for a way to learn about women in law/government and perhaps be inspired to pursue a career in these or other fields that might appear intimidating.
Rating: Summary: The Counselors--wonderful book Review: I found this book entertaining and more importantly, very helpful in my own career. The stories provided are inspirational. Ms. Vrato makes these women of accomplishment seem real. (For example, see the chapter on Janet Reno.) I recommend this book as must reading for any young professional, male or female.
Rating: Summary: The Counselors is a must read Review: I found this book to be inspirational. The author gives the reader insights to these truly courageous women that cannot be found elsewhere. This book would make a great gift to a recent college/grad school graduate or to anyone who realizes the importance of mentoring.
Rating: Summary: Answered My Questions Review: I had always had a lot of questions about how I was going to continue to work at the pace I've had to work for the last several years and ever have anything else in my life besides a grinding schedule with too much work to do. The Counselors helped me by providing long term views of the careers of successful women--some of the stories cover decades--and how they managed to balance a spouse or children or other family or other pursuits in the mix. I feel like I have some models now on which to base my own professional development. For instance, one woman talks about being involved in activities outside the organization where you work in order to be better appreciated within your organization. I realized that when I looked at the most successful people around me, this is exactly what they were doing--enhancing their profile in the community, developing business connections, and raising their value within the organization. That's just one example of many things I took away from this book that I use all the time and have been telling my friends about. Required reading for girls and women who want to maximize their efforts out in the world.
Rating: Summary: Books about award winners seem popular Review: I have read recently this book, The Counselors, and Caroline Kennedy's new book "Profiles in Courage for Our Time." Kennedy's book is about people who are recipients of the Kennedy Library's Profiles in Courage Award. Now I have learned that Mike Wallace has a book out called "Medal of Honor" (it also has a subtitle). Wallace's book profiles recipients of the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor. The Counselors is based on interviews with the recipients of the American Bar Association's prestigious award to recognize trailblazing women. So I feel I've spotted a trend: books that profile award recipients in order to recognize American heroes and to provide us with role models and hope for success over our obstacles in these troubled times.

Rating: Summary: Voices of inspiration Review: I love that this book provides a definite female perspective for women readers while being something men can enjoy too. My boyfriend is a cable news [enjoyer]. He liked this book just for the way it presents events of the last 30 years in a way digestible for general readers.
Rating: Summary: I Couldn't Put it Down-- Review: I read this book in one evening, flopped on my bed, and didn't want to leave this "world" til I had to...a "world" where diversity in power and responsibility is valued, one where people look to help others along, where women are respected as much as men, and where a vision of the future as a better day is sustaining in difficult times. It was absolutely an inspiration and a breath of fresh air. It is easy to become discouraged by so many things that don't really matter. I particularly liked the way the author tells you about these amazing, incredible women with such a light touch, making them seem accessible. I'll read this again and refer to it often.
Rating: Summary: The Counselors is terrific wealth of insights & lessons. Review: I read this fascinating book in a single sitting. By writing this book, the author is being a terrific mentor to her readers. I assigned this book for a seminar on law and popular culture and the students just loved it. One law student had many tabs on pages that she found to be enlightening. Another law student appreciated the positive examples of real-life lawyers and their lives in contrast to the often negative portrayal of lawyers and their lives in the movies and on television. All the students liked the accessible, informal and conversational tone of the book. This book is relevant not only to those interested in law & popular culture, but also to current & former law students, pre-law undergraduates, & those interested in mentoring. The book is a great graduation gift.
