Rating: Summary: Vital Money-Making Advice on 401(k)s and IRAs Review: After seeing the lovely and charming Nancy Lloyd on CNBC's Power Lunch and hearing how Bill Griffeth raved about Simple Money Solutions I got a copy of her book from the library and couldn't put it down. A few weeks later and after running up several dollars in overdue book fines I finally sprung for my own copy and it has been a real eye opener. Several years ago she was one of the first to warn about the risks of having too much retirement money in your company's stock on ABC News Radio. This advice has kept my retirement nest egg safer and my portfolio much larger than it would have been had I not heeded her warning. Since following the advice in this well-written book and seeing how right on it is I have been giving this book as gifts (knowing more about managing your finances is a gift that keeps on giving). The rest of the book is great too. So this book deserves the excellent reviews it has gotten in USA Today, the Washington Post, Money magazine and Morningstar.
Rating: Summary: Sensational Book That Stands the Test of Time Review: If you have been trying to make money in the markets or even just getting started by paying off debts then you -- like most of us -- have probably bought many books that purported to help you manage your finances and create wealth. Like most of us those other books probably did not work for you --even if they were recommended by TV celebrities who know nothing about finances but can't resist recommending books for other motives. If those other inferior books did work as they were purported to then why would you still be looking for a book with usable answers? This book, Simple Money Solutions, is a stunning exception. The advice is accurate. It includes an array of advice because money advice is not one size fits all. And the advice never becomes obsolete. It does stand the test of time! In fact those other books that claim to have THE One and Only answer is almost guaranteed to be nothing but a book built on unproven gimmicks or trendy tricks that do NOT work and that certainly won't work over the long haul. This book and its author, Nancy Lloyd, have taken a different and sound approach to money matters. She presents the issues we're all struggling with out in a clear and concise way and then lays out the options, including financial products, services and strategies to implement various plans. My neighbor and I both read this book but based on our individual situations we chose different financial strategies that fit our unique lives. I have now thrown my other financial advice books out (I wouldn't even give them away for fear that some unsuspecting reader would follow those other books' feeble and inaccurate advice). But I have been punked by other books for the last time. Simple Money Solutions is a KEEPER!!
Rating: Summary: WEALTH MADE SIMPLE Review: IT DOESN'T TAKE MONEY TO MAKE MONEY. IT JUST TAKES SOME EXCELLENT AND UNIQUE ADVICE THAT OTHERS DON'T KNOW YET. SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS DOES JUST THAT. WHEN I COMBINED THIS AMAZING ADVICE WITH MY DETERMINATION TO IMPROVE MY PERSONAL BOTTOM LINE THAT WEALTH STARTED TO POUR IN. AND IT CONTINUES TO DO JUST THAT EVEN AS MARKETS REMAIN SHAKY AND MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE ALREADY LOST THEIR JOBS. GET THIS BOOK SO YOU CAN GET REAL WEALTH.
Rating: Summary: Best Investment in a Down Economy Review: Lots of books will give you advice that seems to work when markets are doing well and the economy is great -- like we've had in the last few years. But most of those other books have stumbled badly (because their advice was worthless) but it only became apparent when the economy took a swan dive. Simple Money Solutions is a much needed exception. Unlike advice written by people working in the financial services sector and who are constantly trying to sell you something, Nancy Lloyd's advice works in rising or falling economies. And you don't even need to be good in math to use it. This book has helped me to find a new and better paying job even as my friends were being laid off and having little success in getting new work. Nancy Lloyd's advice on paying off credit card debt and planning for down times really paid off. I started following her advice more than a year ago and my personal balance sheet couldn't be rosier. Nancy Lloyd is a fabulous money and career coach. This book is a marvelous investment.
Rating: Summary: Our Get Out Of Debt Club's Review: Our book club had a secret a few years ago. In addition to loving to read good books with strong narratives, it turned out that all of our 18 members also had huge amounts of credit card debt. Some of us had about $5,000 in debt, most of us hovered between $20,000 and 35,000 and two of us actually had over $50,000 in unwanted debt. Things were getting desperate. When we finally fessed up to this secret problem we started looking for good money management-debt reduction books but while many claimed to do it most left us with more debt than we started with. Eithher their advice was too convoluted, or too simplistic or in some cases not legal. Several of us had even been to debt consolidators and other debt eliminators but many of them took our money and fled without ever paying our bills. Then we saw Nancy Lloyd on Good Morning America and decided to give this book a shot. Ding, ding, ding. It was a winner. She explained in plain talk how to get real about our debt. We learned how to negotiate with our creditor -- even exactly what to say to get them to lower our interest, forgive some debt and get some negative marks taken off of our credit reports. Nancy also showed us some simple ways to, as she put it "free up cash each month" so that we could finally make more than the minimum payments. What can I say except that after several years all but two of us are DEBT FREE. The other two women can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our book club has now become an investment club and Nancy's great advice on starting and growing a portfolio are paying off even in this sideways stock market. We now have Peace of Mind at last and no longer fear answering the phone because the creditors are no longer calling!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Advice WITHOUT Conflicts of Interest--Refreshing Review: Refreshingly unique. It's my money so when I look for advice I would hope that the author has MY best interest at heart and is NOT a financial planner, stockbroker or someone else who is merely trying to fleece me of my hard-earned money so that they can make a commission. I've already spent too much on other books by money "gurus" of the week who are spouting nothing buy self-serving money advice that is better for him or her than for me. Nancy LLoyd is an amazing exception. She is not selling insurance, annuities, stocks, or bonds. And she's not looking to sign me up as a financial planning client or trying to get me to subscribe to some out-of-date or worthless newsletter. 'SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS' offers just that: great advice that's easy to read and follow and there are no strings attached. If it's true financial freedom you're after Nancy Lloyd's unique advice will get you there. So don't accept imitations. 'SIMPLE MONEY SOLUTIONS' is the one book to buy.
Rating: Summary: Practical Solutions To Most Career Issues Including Layoffs Review: She's been called the "Babe of Bucks" and the "Martha Stewart of Money" but Nancy Lloyd is also adept and skilled in career matters and knows how to explain them clearly and concisely. Her years at IBM are very useful to anyone trying to improve their position in the corporate pecking order or trying to land a job in a stagnant economy. When this book first came out I used her original and easy=to-follow advice on getting a raise at my then present job. I bagged a 19 percent raise and a bunch of perks (including free parking and two extra weeks of vacation) that I hadn't even thought to ask for until I read Simple Money Solutions. Then subsequently I used her advice in another chapter to create a bidding war for my services from some of my firm's competitors and got a B-I-G promotion and a 52 percent raise. Continuing to follow Nancy's advice I have found frequent ways to "make myself indispensible" to my boss so while my friends and co-workers are getting laid off, I'm still gainfully employed. But even if the worst happens and I do get laid off, Nancy Lloyd has included invaluable advice on negotiating a bigger and more favorable severance package. Former co=workers who have followed her advice on landing a new job after a layoff have acknowledged that they would have fallen into some pitfalls during the interview process if they had not read Nancy's fine chapters on landing a job after getting laid off. The economy and job market are shaky enough so the last thing any of us want to do is shoot ourselves in the foot by answering an interviewer's questions wrong or by settling for too little in terms of pay, perks or a severance package. Let me conclude by saying that Simple Money Solutions could also be called Simple Career Solutions That Work and That Are Easy To Follow.
Rating: Summary: Not much new advice here Review: This book contains some good advice -- if you are new to managing your money and have never read another book of financial advice. I was interested in Lloyd's advice on how to spend less money without following a budget. Here are some of her tidbits: 'Pay off the credit cards with the highest interest rates first.' 'Buy a used car, not a new car.' And my favorite: 'Kick the coffee / bottled water habit.' Some of these hints may help you save more or spend less. You can read the same advice in other books. On the other hand, most of us aren't going to save enough to buy that dream house or put the kids through college by reducing our intake of Mocha Latte. Also, I found the little 'sound bytes' called Lloyd's Laws, with her picture and her fake perky little smile, annoying. For someone who has the credentials that the author (allegedly) has, this book is dissapointing -- mostly a rehash of little tidbits of invormation that you have probably read elsewhere, with no depth at all. Luckily, I got the book from my library, I didn't waste my money by buying it.
Rating: Summary: Accurate and a Good Investment Review: This book deserves all the excellent reviews it got from Money Magazine, USA Today, Morningstar, The Washington Post and elsewhere. After seeing Nancy on Good Morning America where Diane Sawyer was extolling the virtues of Nancy's book and her insights into the banking system, I too took the book out of the library in order to take a leisurely look without spending money on something that might not work for me. Happily, this book was everything the reviews and Ms. Sawyer said on GMA. I quickly rushed out and bought my own copy. It's full of useful and unique information about money and I was able to use the information right away to slash credit card costs, mortgage costs and even insurance costs. Her chapters on teaching kids how to be responsible with money are worth the price of the book alone. Her investment advice for new investors like myself was a blessing. She even was able to explain trusts so that I could understand them and have an intelligent discussion with my husband about them. After meeting with a financial planner we have since followed Nancy's advice and hired an estate lawyer who drew up a trust to help us look out for our kids in case something happened to us. And we will also owe much less in taxes so our kids would have more to live on. I can't say enough favorable things about this book.
