Rating: Summary: DOG HEAVEN Review: I ACTUALLY RECEIVED THIS BOOK FROM OUR VET AFTER WE HAD TO PUT DOWN OUR DEAREST FRIEND. IT WAS VERY HELPFUL. IT DEFINITELY HELPED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS HAPPENING.
Rating: Summary: Dog Heaven Review: Dog Heaven is the perfect gift for individuals of all ages who have lost their furry best friend. That is how I discovered it and in turn have give four copies.
Rating: Summary: A wonderul keepsake for those who have lost a loved pet. Review: I first heard this book read as a children's sermon in my Presbyterian Church. It brought tears to my eyes then. I recently lost my beloved dog to renal failure, and my sister sent me "Dog Heaven". Again I cried as I read this sweet book. The illustrations are exceptional. This book is a must for dog lovers of all ages.
Rating: Summary: changed my life Review: This is an essential book to send to anyone who has lost a dog. Dog heaven is sweet and poignant for adults, and informative for children. I have sent this book to many friends and family and recommend it highly. The companion book "cat heaven" is a book that I gave to my neice and nephews when there grandmothers cat Emerson passed away. These are two of the sweetest, best books that deal with gentle dying and death of a pet on such a simple basic level.
Rating: Summary: a wonderful comforting book Review: I have given this book to several friends (adults) who have recently lost their canine friends and all have said what a sense of peace it gave them. It leaves the reader with happy images of their beloved pet in "Dog Heaven" and helps dispell some of the great sadness connected with the death of a pet. Though it is a children's book, I highly recommend it for dog lovers of all ages.
Rating: Summary: Chardonnay Enters "Dog Heaven" Review: Even though my beloved standard poodly, Chardonnay, was almost 14 when she died - and even though it was an event that I knew was forthcoming - I really was not prepared for the enormous sadness and lonliness I felt from losing my best friend. It was important for me to feel that she was in a place that I would see her again and that she was having fun. The many cards that I received from friends seemed to make me sadder; however, when a friend of mine gave me the book "Dog Heaven", I felt comforted to know that Chardonnay "was" watching over me and waiting for me and was enjoying herself. I love the way that Cynthia portrays God as a "Real Animal loving person" right in the "inner circle" with all the dogs... The book was so comforting to me that I now keep several on hand and make sure that any of my friends who lose "their" best friend get a copy. I also keep "Cat Heaven" as well, since it also is such a beautiful story and book. Luckily I haven't needed that one yet.Mary Spencer President Board of Directors Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Dallas, Texas
Rating: Summary: I just love Dog Heaven! Review: This book is such a wonderful way to help anyone who has lost a dog, especially children. I teach preschool and one of my student's lost his dog. I gave him this book as well as I'll Always Love You. His parents said the books really helped, and it really helped our entire class learn about the passing of a beloved family member. It's hard for children to understand death anyway, but when it's someone like a dog or cat who just loves so unconditionally, books like this one really help to alieviate any fear that the pet is in pain, or that pet might forget us! I HIGHLY recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Simple, heartwarming, near perfect Review: Charmingly illustrated and gently written, Rylant's book is perfect for a reader of any age who's recently lost a beloved pet. With gentle humor, Rylant assures the reader that their dog is happy in heaven -- her writing is never over bearing or saccharine. The dogs that fill this book's pages are all brimming with personality, just like our own real-life pets. Rylant has also written CAT HEAVEN, for those of us who aren't necessarily 'dog people'. Either title will lift your spirits.
Rating: Summary: A true comfort Review: I am middle-age, and recently lost my beloved companion of 12 years, a golden retriever mix. I look through this book at some point everyday - it lightens my heavy heart at such a difficult and sad time - it is a children's book, but I recommend it to anyone at any age who has lost a beloved pet - the drawings are precious - and it makes me feel good to look at the book and hope and believe and picture my kind and gentle spirit Maeve in 'dog heaven', whole, young and healthy again, running and playing in the beautiful sunshine, and I love to read the part where they come back to check on us and make sure that we are ok - or check out a favorite spot in their yard. Somehow this comforts me - and can even bring a smile to my face for a moment, replacing the many, many tears.
Rating: Summary: From a Veterinarian's Perspective Review: This book was recommended to me by a friend who's a dog trainer. She said I couldn't read it without having tears in my eyes. This is quite true. This and Ms. Rylant's CAT HEAVEN are wonderful books that we keep available on a "borrow" basis for clients with young children who have lost a beloved pet. All have thanked us for making these books available, and report that they have been helpful to children dealing with the loss in a way that allows them to feel that their pet is in a happy place, and maybe even still "watching over" its "family" . The text and illustrations are excellent for the ages of the children this book is intended for. Many of the parents state that it made them feel better just to read it to a child. My 8 year old daughter read it to my 6 year old son after two of our own elderly dogs passed on last summer. I highly recommend it for children under 10 and their families, for its upbeat, colorful approach to acknowledging the concept of a "doggy afterlife".
