Rating: Summary: Math Curse Review: Amusing story of how math is integrated into every aspect of our daily life. This book takes you through one day in the main character's life after his teacher says, "You know, you can think of almost everything as a math problem." As you read, you can stop and solve problems that are funny and intriguing. Good for any age child and a fantastic resource for math teachers!
Rating: Summary: great for first days Review: As a student at the University of Georgia, I am interested in anything that might spark my future students' interests in math. During a field practice with 5th graders, a fellow classmate and I read this book to our class. The students were all involved and laughed throughout. I think this book is an excellent way for math teachers to begin the year off on a light note. This also lets students know that even math teachers have a sense of humor.
Rating: Summary: Math Curse can be confusing. Review: Being a children's book, this is hard to understand. If we were younger, we'd be confused. Otherwise, the story is fairly interesting but young readers will be turned off by a book all about math. This book has an adult theme yet in a children's format alienating all of its audience. This interesting theme could be rewritten in an adult format.
Rating: Summary: Adults and children will chuckle through this book Review: Good for children of any age with a fear of math. one childs experience of spending a day "cursed" by his teacher
to see everything in terms of numbers. Excellent illustrations. I read it aloud to my fellow tutors at Kirtland (KCC, Roscommon, Michigan) and started our day off with lots of laughs.
Rating: Summary: Not all Curses Are Bad! Review: I absolutley loved this book. The illustrations along with the story line brings about a wonderfull method to get children (of all ages)thinking about math. Whether they like it or not, math is a part of their daily lives. This book makes math fun and gets kids thinking about how perhaps they will experience a "math curse" one day.

Rating: Summary: To Be Read Again and Again Review: I bought this book for my daugther when she was in kindergarten. "Again Mommy." she demanded after I had read it to her. And so, I read it again. "Again Mommy." And so, I read it to her again. "Again Mommy." and so... I have long since lost track of how many times we read the book.It starts with Mrs. Fibonnaci telling her class that "YOU KNOW,you can think of almost everything as a math problem." And we're off on adventure of doing just that. The illustrations are wonderful, and match the text perfectly. The book is silly for young children and funny for older children. It is obvious and subtle at the same time. I think this is why some reviewers think that it miscategorized as being for ages 4 to 8. There is so much in the book that kids see it differently at different ages. My daugther is now in 4th grade and she still takes this book off the shelf to read... just for fun. Recently she had a math assignment to show a series of numbers. She chose a Fibonnaci series. This book stays with you. The book ends with Mr. Newton telling his class "YOU KNOW, you can think of almost everything as a science experiment." Note to the author: I'm waiting for you to write the "Science Curse."
Rating: Summary: Great book, but Amazon.com has reading level listed wrong! Review: I have a computer science degree, so have taken a LOT of math, and enjoyed most of it. My two children, ages 9 and 11, have mixed feelings about math. All three of us enjoyed Math Curse immensely. The reviewer who said it would alienate children is dead wrong; and the one who complained about repetition must be missing a lot of the book. There's new surprises on every page. Even the price on the jacket is funny! One problem: Amazon.com recommends this book for ages 4-8. That should be corrected to grades 4-8. It's definitely not for the 'Goodnight Moon' set. I'm about to ignore the age/grade recommendations, anyway, and buy a copy for my math-loving teenage nephew. I'm betting he'll get a big kick out of its irreverence and math in-jokes.
Rating: Summary: A great book for a teacher! Review: I have used this book to teach second, fourth, and sixth grade. All of my students have enjoyed it. I would even recommend it for higher grades b/c there are a lot of math jokes that students will not get in the lower grades. This book is great if you want to place a "math curse" on your students so they look at everything as a math problem! They analyze their daily life and are able to write their daily routines as math problems. This is a must have for any teacher/parent!
