Rating: Summary: Who says you have to be a young reader to enjoy this book! Review: As a non-fiction writer recently finishing up an article on bats I felt myself drawn to this book simply by its cover. I read this story first before rereading it with my daughter (as I do with most books). Parents with young readers will certainly enjoy sharing this spellbinding story with their children. Shade is a delight as he struggles to show those around him that he is more than a runt. As we travel with Shade in search of his mother and their colony, we see his abilities shine brightly; his intelligance, skillful flying, ability to adapt and his great wit. Shade is an excellent model for children 9 to 90. Silverwing is cleverly written using actual bat behaviour, mixing in wonderfully creative images to keep you riveted to each page. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
Rating: Summary: As good as Harry Potter! Review: I have read Silverwing and Sunwing and I can't wait until Firewing comes out. Shade Silverwing is a very brave and funny bat. His best friend Marina Brightwing is very good at getting ideas. Together they look for Shade's father Cassiel, try to find the secret of the band, and find out what Nocturna's promise is. Along the way the way they meet up with two caniblal bats named Goth and Throbb who want to eat Shade and Marina. Both of them finally get to Hibernaculum, and Marina is welcomed into the Silverwing colony. This is a great book to read if you like Harry Potter.
Rating: Summary: Silverwing an epic story!!! Review: I would most definitely recommend this book to any reader who likes stories with adventure drama and a little mystery, when it comes to one of Shades friend. The story goes like this, a bat, named Shade is the runt among all of the other bats in his tree colony. Every year Shade the rest of his colony travel to the south to their winter cave where they hibernate until spring. The journey is a long, treacherous and unfortunately Shade gets separated from all of the other bats. He has no choice but to find his way to his winter cave (Hibernaculum) meet his family there. On his way he meets a few interesting bats who seem to be friendly and want to help but you never can tell when it comes to bats. They teach Shade a few tricks about surviving alone and....... well lets not ruin the ending for you. I guess you will just have to read the book for yourself. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: My Summary Review: RECOMMENDATION I recommend this book to everyone that is 10 years and older. This book is very well written and suspenseful. In one part when Goth is chasing Shade. Shade says," I see you" then Shade sees Goth and runs. It also has a lot of action like the second part he fights the owl. Shade sees it and he screamed " This time you will die." So he went up to it and killed it. If you like action and suspense read this book.
Rating: Summary: get inside the mind of a bat in this standard adventure Review: Shade is a young sliverwing bat. He wants to see the sun, something forbidden to bats by ancient animal law. He gets separated from his colony during their winter migration and meets another bat who tries to help him find his colony while evading canabalistic jungle bats intent on stirring up warfare among birds, animals, and bats. For any bat lovers or bat-fearers this is an unconventional look into the life of bats, one that makes you want to take a second look at the furry little creatures...Otherwise, it's fairly standard fantasy adventure.
Rating: Summary: real bats as characters, not anthropomorophic rodents Review: Silverwing chronicles the journey of fledgling bat Shade from the bat colony's Summer haunt to their Winter hibernation spot. Early on the trip he is separated from the group and must make the rest of the long journey by himself. He does find several friends along the way, Marina a female bat, and Goth a Strange foreign bat with secret motives, and Zephyr a mystic oracle type. Shade also is thrown into a war between the bats and the owls making for many tense moments and narrow escapes. Besides being a young bat with something to prove to the rest of the colony there is also an unresolved back story in which Shade's father may, or may not, still be alive.
Mr. Oppel's descriptions of the bat world are fascinating! The echo chamber and the insect hunting scenes are very original. These are real bats, that live in the real world, not little woodland creatures that wear clothes and cook meals and live in houses. He also adds a healthy amount of mysticism and philosophy, subjects that give the story extra weight and are not often found in books for young readers. He is to be commended.
While this is a children's book the main character does not seem to experience any growth despite many challenging experiences. The climax of the book is handled without any effort by Shade. He comes to no conclusion nor solves any problem by knowledge he may have gained in his long struggle. He wins by dumb luck. It may leave some older reads unfulfilled.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING! Review: Silverwing is amazing.
An incredible animal fantasy in the tradition of Watership Down, Duncton Wood and The Secret of Nimh, Silverwing is the story of Shade, a Silverwing bat lost from his colony after a battle with the owls, who have persecuted the bats for many centuries, with a rule that no bat will ever be allowed to see the sun.
Shade is swept out over the ocean, where he meets a fascinating female Brightwing Bat, Marina, who joins him on his quest.
They encounter a blind albino bat with psychic vision, Zephyr, and must survive the perils of the evil cannibalistic Vampire Bat Goth and his hungry sidekick Throbb , and murderous owls, pigeons and rats.
Combining a knowledge of nature and an incredible talent for fantasy Oppel opens up a world as fascinating as Tolkien's in this page-turning book , which I finished in a day.
It will certainly change the way you see Batkind. Giving you new sympathy for these little creatures.
Rating: Summary: Silverwing Review Review: The book I am reviewing is Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel. I liked this entire book, every page of it and it never got boring. However I did have a favorite part and that was when Shade the main character met Maria and the adventure begins. I think one of the scariest and nerve racking is when their home was burnt down. The setting is very descriptive. This book has won the Mr. Christie's book award and is a book all kids must read.
Rating: Summary: A Bat Named Shade Review: The book Silverwing is a book I could not put down! Through out their journey they encounter two vampire bats who plan to capture his colony and take them to the jungle to be their slaves.
