Rating: Summary: Buy this book, follow its advice, and DIE Review: Once a thriving religion with more than a million members, Christian Science now has about 70,000 adherents in north america, mostly old women. Why? Because almost anyone foolish enough to stay with it is dead. Younger people who have any education outside of the church learn to realize that Mary Baker Eddy was full of crap. In 1879, when Mary Baker Eddy founded her "religion," if you were sick or injured, you had about as much chance for help from positive thinking (the foundation of Christian Science) as from a doctor. But today, avoiding immunizations and medical care is foolish. The proof is seen in the graduates of Principia College, an exclusively Christian Science school. No less an authority than the CDC has published that its graduates die younger than others when they should die later (they don't drink or smoke). But the worst is the baby killing. They claim that disease is caused by sin or improper thoughts. If a child is sick, they claim, it's due to thought errors of the parents. So, the treatment is for the parents to pray. The result: Dead Babies and guilt-ridden parents. The good news is that in another generation or two, this church will be relegated to be the fringe curiosity it rightfully deserves. Just because Larry King interviews Christian Scientist on his "infomercials" for fads and wackos that masquerades as a television show, and plugs this book on it, doesn't mean that this book is worth anything other than as toilet paper. All of the reviews written in support of this book are from church members who have tunnel vision. Fortunately for most of us, they'll soon be dead. Unfortunately for their children, some of them will be too, victims of modern day human sacrifice. They call it Christian Science, but it's neither a science nor is it christian. It is pure evil masquerading as a religion.
Rating: Summary: If you feel like you think differently than everyone else Review: or if you wonder if this is all there is, well, this book will answer your questions--and more. Many have read this book and found it articulates how they've always felt, and helps them come to terms with themselves. It is not an easy read, but radical ideas are seldom easy to articulate or grasp. Many reviews have spoken about children and parents dying. This also happens in the medical profession, but people seem to expect perfection from this healing method while not expecting it from medicine. In July, 2003, the Rand Corporation published a study that said the medical profession was making mistakes in diagnosis and treatment about 50% of the time. While the study didn't get much publicity, it certainly makes me want to have more control over my own health care than a 50-50 proposition (Las Vegas offers no games with those odds! There's a reason.) If you want more out of life, if you're searching for answers about God or your own existence, if the consumer mentality leaves you feeling empty, then read this book. It's ideas will expand your horizons, reveal new meaning, and help you fill those empty places.
Rating: Summary: A POSTITIVE BOOK FOR POSITIVE HEALTH Review: I find this book very positive and encouraging for a person to read often to get a positive outlook on life. The author encourages a person not to worry too much about problems in life and wants a less materialistic and more spiritual daily living. By doing this a person is better able to stay healthy not fearful of getting sick but knowing that our GOD wants us to be healthy, helpful, cheerful, successful and being there for others. The writer encourages daily Bible reading alongside this book and it seems to me to be a good recipe for a good godly life. In the back of the book is about one hundred pages called fruitage which is testimonial of persons healed by reading this book. stephen segall segalls@aol.com
Rating: Summary: Can anything explain everything? Science & Health does. Review: This book can change your life. It did mine. The opening words from the preface - "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings. The time for thinkers has come." say it all. If you are not afraid to think, this book is for you. Christian Science claims to be the ultimate statement of the Science of Being or God itself. It claims to explain all reality and causation. Unlike most religions, it declares that God can be known and understood and that the problem of evil can be explained. It claims to find nothing mysterious about the Creator or his creation. This book contains the complete statement of Christian Science theology. A reading of this book and application of the principles it expounds has resulted in the healing of physical disease and other conditions considered incurable. The reviewer has experienced the results of the application of the Principle set forth in this book. By application of the Principle explained in this book, you will find that God can be known and not just believed and ignorantly worshipped. Pondering on the truths revealed in this marvelous and totally original work, you will learn the nature of your relationship to God. From your study of the Christian Science Textbook, you can immediately apply, with complete certainty, the Science of Christianity to your life and prove for yourself that the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus has indeed come into the world
Rating: Summary: Not for Christians , but... Review: What's Christian about it???? Read your bible. Try "Christ the Healer" by Bosworth, "A More Excellent Way" by Henry Wright.
Rating: Summary: Read the Bible - Isn't Christian Science "Another Gospel" Review: "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other that that one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say any again: if anybody is preaching to you a gospel other that what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.?" May God Bless and free you.The Apostle Paul, Galatians 1:8-10
Rating: Summary: Well, I love this book Review: The reviews here are all pretty much one way or another. Most readers seem to like Science and Health, while many others have some strong negative comments/reviews. It should be addressed here, however, that many reviews are about the Christian Science Church rather than the book itself. Some individuals have had negative experiences with the Church/religion, and their experiences are completely valid. I am not about to defend the shortcomings of a human institution in this space. I do feel the need, however, to distinguish between a religion and its book. People, for example, may have had problems with the Catholic faith in their life, but that's no reason to start bashing the Bible or giving it a one star rating. What few seem to discuss here is the book's central thesis, that God exists and that His divine laws should be directly applicable to us in our daily lives. I personally happen to agree with this statement, but I can also understand why some out there would disagree. Maybe they don't believe in God, or don't believe in Jesus' teachings. Maybe they don't think that God can affect their daily lives. There are 100 pages of testimonials of people who were healed of various ailments from reading this book. Will your life be permanently changed by reading this book? It could. At the very least, you will read a book that makes you think about your personal relationship with God. For me, that's something that is without price.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Guide!!!!! Review: I found this book to be a great compliment to my own Faith as a Roman Catholic. I was skeptical at first, but soon realized that what Mrs. Eddy was teaching was already latent in me. As many of the testimonials attributed, it was a particular incident in my life, which led a friend to recommend the book. Amazingly, I found answers to my problem very early on in my reading, and continued for the sake of learning more. I now understand fully the concept of Christian Science, and continue to practice it with the hope of helping others.
Rating: Summary: A book for Life! Review: What a wonderful resource for living this is. I have studied CS all my life, more recently than previously, and have benefited more than words can say. I love CS with my whole heart, try to live it to my best ability and love learning more about Life, Love and how God controls and holds his children in his heart. As sunbeams radiate out from the sun, we cannot ever be seperated from God and Love and what a wonderful knowing this is! I have been healed of flu, effects of a car accident, grief, burns, misunderstood relationships, female problems, eye problems and morality issues. I am so grateful for this book and share it whenever possible :-)
Rating: Summary: Too bad we can't rate a book with negative stars Review: Radical reliance on this religion killed two of my immediate family members in the past 10 years. Another one is permanently incapacitated because he was taken to the hospital too late to repair the damage done by untreated TB. Christian Science demands you rely on God for healing. If you study it "properly," you must give up reliance on all material means of healing, including doctors and medicine, and anything other than prayer. If you want to know about this church's healing track record, I refer you to christianway.org -- a group of former Christian Scientists. You might also want to read "Living and Dying in the CS Church" by Caroline Fraser. Don't disregard what I have to say as someone who "just doesn't know what they are talking about." I am a fourth generation CS (about as far back as you can get) and was raised in this religion and practiced it until I was in my 30s. Do not walk -- run -- from this religion. It has caused more misery to my family than I can ever calculate. You don't know me -- but please listen to someone who has "been there and done that." For your sake, and the sake of your family and friends, do not be taken in by the glossy promises of CS. This is not a New Age religion -- it has its roots in Mesmer, Quimby and other faith healers of the early 1800s. It has the capacity to alienate you from your own feelings, blast relationships, and kill you way before your time.
