Summary: Strange Days Indeed. Most peculiar
Review: This book has caused quite an uproar. Hmmm. Could be that because when it was written the religious dogma of the day was pathetic. Remember back in the 1800's people thought you were born pre-destined to heaven or hell. They believed god was a male human and satan had red horns. So for its time this book was actually liberating. For its time it made a decent attempt into the metaphysical reality of mind and the true nature of phenomena.
Today this book has a history behind it, and its good and bad aspects are not too hard to see. The ideas about objects being related to the mind that perceives them is still quite relevant and the author deserves credit for dwelving into this arena without the aid of quantum physics, buddhism, and hinduism. The application of these ideas into a system of human health has been over the long-term, unsuccessful and sometimes deadly. The average life span of a christian scientist is shorter than the national average. I can't help but think that if the author was alive today she would ban this practice or at least severely modify it.
The christian science movement that arose from this book is experiencing a natural decline today due to its unwillingness to deal with the books shortcomings, and yes, even mistakes. Science is a process of evolution where we keep the proven truth and eliminate the proven false. This christian science movement refuses to do this and thus, refuses to act scientifically. Take the good and eliminate the false. Even Einstein had some theories that were totally wrong. The authors optimistic assumption that any human ill can be corrected through prayer and mental treatment is false. This has been proved time and time again by the fact that people actually die. This does not mean that we don't have the potential to achieve an enlightened state. It just means that we are not there yet, and we shouldn't pretend that we are, to the point where we let ourselves die from ailments that are routinely treated successfully by the medical community.
Still, given the books shortcomings, for its time, it is remarkable that this woman was able to decifer into the nature of reality and its relationship to the mind. Put this book under the religious history category.

Summary: beyond words
Review: ok so is God good or is He the boogie man?

MBE goes back to Genesis 1 & 2 for this info and is on the money...

one of her students-another writer named Marchette Chute comes right out and says that not only is Adams deity NOT God but that it's the only "satan" there is and who Jesus was referring to when he says 'he's the liar & father of lies- murderer from the beginning'

people want to skip the Genesis 1 God cuz they think it boring or the mortal mind can't handle the concept of thru & thru good but this has to change

whoohoo! big collective thought changes are afoot!

I'm every day amazed and grateful for MBE and her revelation

the Bible would be hooey to me without her and I can't help but wonder if these folks who find her confidence 'gaudy' would feel the same way if she'd been male

Highly concentrated; potent and pivotal

Summary: Testament to sheep-like ignorance of thousands
Review: This book is worth reading just for you to laugh at. That is what Mark Twain did; he wrote a book called "Christian Science," which you might be able to find in your library.... This book should never have been the basis of a religion. If it was just a book it could have been more useful; but people totally screwed it up by turning it into a religion, and it has been resposible for a lot of agony, which must sadden God a lot.

Summary: A religious textbook - not a self-help book.
Review: I know much of this book from memory, having attended Christian Science Sunday school from age 6 until I left home to go to college. Among the words I memorized are many which offer comfort -- "To those leaning on the sustaining Infinite, today is big with blessings" -- and resonate with the New Age language of today -- "All is infinite Mind, and its infinite manifestation". As a book to read, it's no worse than many of the current crop of self-help texts.

But this is not a "self-help" book. It is the founding text of the Church of Christ, Scientist - the "pastor" of that denomination - which has been repackaged in an attempt to turn the tide of dwindling membership and closing churches. The publishers of this book do not want you to simply read it - they particularly do not want you to read it with a critical and analytical mind. They want you to read it, believe it and become a member of their church.

As a Christian Scientist, you will not use any drugs, including caffeine, alcohol or tobacco. Your children will not be innoculated against childhood ailments and you will ignore any signs which might be symptoms of illness. Prayer will be your only source of aid and comfort, for illnesses ranging from upset stomach to end-stage cancer. You might experience healings - but then, you might also die of the many medically-treatable ailments which have killed Christian Scientists and their children in spite of their prayers.

And regardless of how your life proceeds, when the end comes (and everyone does indeed die), you will have to abandon your religion and be abandoned by it in order to obtain the simple palliative care which allows you to die in peace, with dignity.

Please read this book with caution and decide for yourself whether the comfort it offers is worth the price: basing your life on the premise that everything you can see, taste, touch, smell or hear is unreal and that any illness you experience is a result of your own flawed thinking.

Summary: Something radically different
Review: We are looking at a whole new ballgame. Traditional values aren't what they used to be. People are finding that lasting happiness just isn't available through sensuality and materialism. They are also searching for a reason to keep going. Obviously, if there is a paradise waiting for us after we die, then what's the point of enduring all of the problems here on Earth. Well, there's more to it than that. A lot more.

People are wanting to know why doing good to others has any value in today's world - a world that is constantly shouting out that we should only look out for ourselves. People are also growing more and more frustrated about following rules set down by ancient religions. "If God is going to punish me just for being born, why even try to be good?"

People deserve to find answers to these questions. They deserve to feel peace. Finding this peace may require letting going of some cherished beliefs. Beliefs such as "I am a sinful mortal" and "Suffering is just a part of life." We're ready to end the charade.

The book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures isn't your everyday self-help book. It teaches us that we can find answers ourselves, without the help of "advisors" or "clergy". What it doesn't do is tell us we are cursed. It doesn't tell us we are bad. It doesn't lie to us. People have been lied to long enough. It's time for some truth.

Is the truth easy to swallow? Well, sometimes the truth can taste pretty bad. That doesn't mean it is bad. Truth can never be anything but good. Sometimes eating good food after brushing our teeth can taste awful. We are smart enough to know we don't need to spit out the food! It's the combination of the food with the "non-food" that is causing the problem. Similarly, it is the combination of the truth with the "non-truth", otherwise known as error, that seems to make the truth feel untrue. It can make the truth seem downright ridiculous!

Nonetheless, people are less and less content with discarding truth just because it "tastes bad." They want to know why eating up the same old lies isn't making their lives any better. They want to see the big picture. There is no bigger picture than Truth's picture. It is much bigger than CNN or even the Internet. Science and Health assures us that we are entitled to see the big picture. In fact we are required to see it. It is at once our privilege and our responsibility.

Naturally, fighting against this responsibility isn't going to feel so good. The wonderful thing is: as we stop fighting, we find that the truth is able to change our lives dramatically. It is truly amazing how fulfilling our lives can be without all those awful lies clouding our vision.

The truth is available. It is up to each of us to give it a try. No time like the present!

This book has answers!

Summary: A Book for Life
Review: Science and Health is a non-denominational book that addresses your spiritual identity as a child of God. I have read it many times and have been healed of breast cancer, financial challenges, relationship problems. My son, at the age of two, was healed of measles in a half-hour just by reading a few lines from the chapter on Recapitulation.

The writing is very clear and strictly based on the Scriptures; both the Old and New Testaments. It brings brings God and what He can do for us into better focus without a lot of dogma and theory.

It is a classic book on spirituality. I heartily recommend it for anyone seeking the truth.

Summary: Aside from the Bible, this is the best book ever!
Review: The things I am about to write may be considered highly controversial to many of you, but I think it must be said (all of it is my opinion), but please at least hear me out.

First of all, Jesus is NOT God (and vice versa), because God - purely spiritual - cannot be manifested in the flesh, since matter is unreal (as shown by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science in Health"); besides, why does Jesus refer and talk to God as his Father often?. Also, Jesus will not be returning, there is no 'second coming' because everything that Jesus represented - the Christ truth - is eternal and will always be with us no matter what. And when people say that 'Jesus died to save us from our sins', they seem to be missing the bigger picture; that Jesus showed death to be unreal and conquerable through God when he was resurrected a few days later (and not only he can do it, but you too!).

And lastly (perhaps most importantly), haven't you ever wondered why you don't heal others like Jesus did? That was his main message to all of us, to follow in his footsteps and do as he and his disciples did. So what happened to that? You tell me....

If you only read a few pages of S&H by MBE (and you don't have to be a Christian Scientist to do so), you may find yourself agreeing with more that she writes than you'd think. Give it a chance, I dare you!

Summary: Life altering experience
Review: Althought there are many skeptics of Christian Science, dont listen to them. Just becuase you buy this book doesnt mean your a Christian Scientist. Science and Health illustrates life in a matter that gives faith and meaning. This book and Christian Science for that matter isnt about people who dont do medicine, thats an individual choice, but rather giving people faith and knowing the truth about spirituality. I most absolutely recommend getting this book, it will change your life for the BETTER!!

(Shame on you critics....dont blame your individual insecurities and fears on this book or Christian Science, that is just something you will have to overcome yourself!)

Summary: works for me...
Review: This book has changed my life. It can change yours, too. There is nothing in this book or any of the other writings by Mary Baker Eddy that forbids a church member to decide how to care for him/herself OR FOR HIS/HER CHILDREN! I was raised as a Christian Scientest was never left to suffer as a child -- I had quick healings and the one time I went to a doctor to have a broken bone set (my parents took me at my request), I was completely well in three days thanks to Christian Science (the doctor held my arm in one had and the x-ray in the other and said it was miraculous). Read it for yourself with an open mind, you'll see....
