Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: THE Book on Computer Networks. Covers almost anything you can imagine. I use it for teaching at the undergraduate level and the students really like it. It has some minor errors, but I've found out for myself that Andy Tanenbaum is a really accessible person (I sent him an email without expecting a reply, and he didn't only reply, but chatted with me about the subject). A friend of mine was borrowing it from me so much that I had to offer her to get one for her here at amazon.com. I never did because she bought it herself. Enough talk. Get the book. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Great for teaching Review: An excellent book. Not limited to grey theories, it even shows you that a crate full of magnetic media allows you to transfer data faster than HIPPI... I use it for parts of my networking courses - hoping that Amazon will add the solutions book too :)
Rating: Summary: This book should be in all bed-side table of networking pro Review: The book is simply great. It covers all theory about computer networks and should be always at the side of any networking professional to really understand the tecnology behind the products
Rating: Summary: Tanenbaum does it again -- the communucations bible Review: Tanenbaum has overhauled his second edition to take into account the massive shift to Internetworks and the IP protocol. As usual, he does an excellent job of elucidating the subtleties of the technology while maintaining his witty style.
The book's key strength is that it combines solid theoretical underpinnings and clear explanations with consideration of the non-technical aspects of networking. These include market acceptance (some wise words on why ISDN failed, for example), the politics of "standards" and day-to-day pragmatic "getting it done" issues.
Tanenbaum's broader consideration enables the book to avoid the trap of becoming an unworldly academic text. It gives "Computer Networks" its licence to function as an indispensable everyday working reference.
I work in the communications/networking industry and keep this book handy. I lend it to colleagues to photocopy the odd section, and they always end up buying their own copy. Enough said!
I gave this book a 9 for including some of the old and dying technologies that lack even instructional value, at the expense of newer technologies that are seeing wide deployment. Grist for the fourth edition, I guess :-)
Rating: Summary: Too mathematical and theory-oriented Review: Unlike Tanenbaum's other books (Computer Architecture, and Operating System Design); this book is tough to read (compared to other data comm books) and covers lots of theory. If you are looking to write a thesis, this book might be for you. If you really want to work in the communications field, skip this book.
Rating: Summary: Book for a new start Review: I really enjoyed reading Tanenbaums' books. He rally has a way to teach things. For the comment, this book is a starters book; To understand what is what in the networking world. I advise to people read this book before they sleep so that they will learn after a week, how interesting this Networking World is. For the intermediate readers this book could revive their lack of knowledge on some specific fields.. But as for the Advanced I do not recommend this book
Rating: Summary: Sublime- Provides a solid conceptual heuristic framework!! Review: Check out Professor Tanenbaum's web site as listed in this book. See also page 663 where he describe why he has his own web site.
Client Server magazine on-line did a survey of CIO's and their top books of all time list....
This book was on that list so I ordered it from amazon.com
Rating: Summary: A bible of computer networking technology! Review: Dr. Tanenbaum gave an excellent classical work to majority of people related to the computer networks.
For beginners, the book gives an outline for progress of computer networks, and the most important approaches. For those who study the networking technology systematically, the book provides a set of accurate concepts about networking, with comparison to the easily confused terminologies. For someones full of experiences, the book tells about recent approaches and some important ideas, and presents many important issues that scientists and engineers should consider in the future.
All in all, I think it is the best book on computer networking. It is not only better than all others I've read before, including those in original and translated ones, but also more imformative than its old version -- the 2nd edition.
Rating: Summary: Good book for beginners Review: This is a very good book to introduce networks, which
is the best one for beginners. From this book readers
may get an outline of computer networks and a good base to continue deep topics.
Rating: Summary: Decent introductionary level network book Review: The book covers most widespread network configurations on an introductionary level. Unfortunatly Mr. Tanenbaums personal oppinion shines through and give the book a hint of subjectivity. The book even contains errors due to poor research
