Summary: A great book for beginners.....
Review: I was scared to death of this language, but after reading the first six chapters, I am actually enjoying the learning process associated with Perl. This book builds on examples, and gives you helpful quizzes at the chapter ends. This book was recommended to me by a friend in programming, and anyone interested in learning Perl, should start with this book....Excellent Book!

Summary: First chapter is worth the price of the book
Review: I have read a lot of programming books. This one is an excellent combination of a textbook, tutorial and reference book. The first chapter ("A walk through Perl") will give you enough of an understanding to start tackling problems with this useful language.

Summary: Excelente introdução à linguagem Perl

Summary: Great
Review: It is a great Book!! It is so user friendly!! I have no programming Background and run on Win95 and was easily able to grasp it within a half hour i was writing simple scripts. A must have for all people who want to learn Perl. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about Webdesign or my review at Giawizzard@aol.com

Summary: THE place to start.
Review: I have read the first edition of Learning Perl. And if the second edition is anything like the first, it's well worth it. The first chapter is something to be skipped, however. They basically throw everything at you that your going to learn in the rest of the book. But after that it's classic O'Reilly at it's best. If you want to learn the power and -flexiblity- of Perl, This is the place to start.

Summary: This needs to be a better book
Review: I have learned many languages in my computer career. I am 17 and I have learned approx. 6 languages excluding the English and French :) In all my book reading days, I have never seen a worse book than this one. It has a lot of useful information except that some people are just starting in UNIX programming. This book jumps right into the harder languages instead of actually touching base with each command. I really wish that SAMS would write a book for Perl because I really like their books

Summary: Gets you up to speed FAST.
Review: I had been stumbling around Perl for a while now, modifying downloaded scripts and writing a small CGI script or two but I never actually sat down to _learn_ the language. Picked up this book based on the excellent recommendations here and it's definitely paid off. Burned through it in a day and by the evening I was finishing off my first real Perl script (with the next one started the following morning). Don't know how useful it is for non-programmers but if you have a programming background, especially with scripting, you'll find this an excellent way to get up to speed. It doesn't cover everything but it's not supposed to. It quickly lets you hit the ground running, and that's a good thing.

Summary: A great way to get started
Review: I needed this book for a class in web programming, so I was expecting a basic tutorial in cgi programming. Instead, this book gave me a great overview of the entire perl language, and its application to areas such as system administration and report generation. With a background in C or Unix shell programming, the book is easy to follow but quickly paced. I am looking forward to reading the more advanced Programming Perl to go more in-depth into the language.

Summary: Well written, excellent tutorial
Review: Learning Perl, is probably the BEST place to start for someone desiring to learn and use Perl. I have finished reading it (the first edition) and have found the writing style to be very clear and understandable. Though a little C programming or Unix shell programming would be helpful in learning perl, I don't feel it is absolutely necessary with this book. If you're looking for a good place to start, this is it.

Summary: This book saved my life
Review: I was recently given a large task to complete in a short ammount of time. I had never programed before and was terrified at the thought of my first project being one of such a huge magnitude. However, since I had this book available, I was able to get a quick grasp of the basics and then, with the help of Mr. Schwartz and some source code that I got from a friend, I was able to put together a fully functional web based application that joined the WWW and an Oracle database. Without this book, I would have been lost in a sea of ignorance. Anyone who needs to learn Perl should giver serious consideration to this one. It just may save your life.
