Summary: Excellent guide for beginners
Review: This book was an indispensable guide for me when I was learning Perl. Now that I know more about the language and am writing more advanced programs, I've definitely outgrown it. Still, I don't regret one penny I spent on it. It's an excellent, gentle introduction to Perl. I'd definitely recommend it to any Perl beginner. (BTW, this refers to the first edition.)

Summary: Good Beginner Book!
Review: Definitely the book to get if you want to start learning Perl! Once you've finished the lessons though, not much of a good reference, which is why it lost a star with me!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Best Book for Perl Beginners!
Review: If you want to learn perl fast and still learn efficient perl programming this is the book! You can easily read it in two weeks and by then you are able to write CGI scripts or whatever you want. The author writes in a humourous style, so a sense of humor is essential.

Also read the foreword by Larry Wall (inventor of Perl), it is sooo funny :)

Summary: A five but for the typos
Review: This is an excellent book for a beginning programmer and even for an experienced programmer who is new to Perl. Readers benefit from examples and exercises, where they learn everything from Perl's general syntax to the nuances of file handling. There is also a very good chapter on CGI programming with Perl at the end of the book. We find that the students in the introductory CGI scripting/Perl class we offer at WestLake Solutions prefer it to the more advanced Programming Perl. I would have given this book a five-star rating had it not been for the mass of typos throughout the book.

Summary: Yes; typos are a drag, but...
Review: Yes; the typos are a drag but this is an impingement upon the editors and publisher rather than the authors. This is the only aspect keeping me from giving this one 5 stars. O'Reilly needs to quit resting on their laurels and get their part of the job done.

As far as the text goes, the authors' approach is excellent. I have no previous experience with Perl and minimal with Unix, yet am able to follow along comfortably. Criticisms of the examples as being "egotistical" must stem from narrow minds unable to see the forest through the trees as they do their job of illustrating the concepts exceptionally well.

To summarize, I really like this book. And now I must get back to reading it;-]

Summary: icing on the cake...
Review: overall, the book was easy to understand, but i was really annoyed by the myriads of typos and mistakes that are in the book which suggests a lack of care. so the icing on the cake was missing...

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: good reference and teaching manual
Review: this book is a good introductory book into perl but cannot serve as the end all be all book for your learning purposes...it is highly suggested that you buy programming perl along with it to use as your reference manual as you go along, because if you learn anything about perl and ever actually use it then you will be buying this book eventually anyways.

The explanation is easy and clear, the beginner Perl programmers can understand it without that much efforts. This should be the first book for the programmers who want to learn to program in Perl.
