Summary: Fast and Fun
Review: I knew nothing about HTML when I started other than that it was the code used to make web pages. Whenever I hit 'view source' it was like looking at the Chinese alphabet. Then I bought this book. In less than a day, I had all the basics down and even created my own web site. Now I can create a complex page using nothing but a text editor. Not only did I learn quickly, but it was one of the easiest books I've ever read, not dry and boring like most tech-manuals. I recommend this book to experts and novices alike.

Summary: This is the place to start
Review: YOU: A newcomer to the web/Internet or programming. You know the web is big and you know what a web page is. You want to develop your own, either using straight Notepad or possibly a software development tool such as FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or Homesite. However, despite what these tools can do, you want to know about HTML.

THE BOOK: As introductory as it gets for HTML. It starts you off at the roots: let's sort through all these web technologies you hear about: XML, CSS, etc. But don't worry too much about those. Here's what HTML is: tags, spacing, designing, etc. How do you go about planning and designing your website, then look at it in a browser? How can I create and add images, create links, lists of information, tables, frames and forms to my web page. How can I use Cascading Style Sheets, a way to provide a consistent look throughout multiple pages of my website? Each page provides an example of both the code and the webpage screenshot of the HTML being put to use in a page. Toss in a specular appendix that suggests HTML tools and more importantly, Colors in Hex (hint: learn what web safe colors are as soon as you decide to design a web page!) and you have this book. Three hundred pages of no-nonsense, get me working with HTML information for the web page designing beginner.

Summary: A "Must" for Java Programmers who are HTML Newcomers
Review: I am a Java developer who had ignored HTML for a long time; with the advent of server-side Java technology such as servlets and Java Server Pages, I found myself having to play a quick game of "catch up"!

Ms. Castro's book was just what I needed: well organized, clearly written, and simple/quick to read, yet quite thorough. Based solely on what I learned from her book, I was able to launch my first website. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: Sweet, Simple, and Successful
Review: I love this book. It's well organized, easy to follow and the examples are complete enough for illustration without being too long to follow. What more can I say?

Summary: Try It, You'll Love It!
Review: This is a brilliant and easy to follow book. By presenting each topic in a manageable way and with examples of everything discussed in the book, nothing is overwhelming. It is consistent, focused, and thorough (details are even provided on the software, fonts and photos used to create the book). It leaves no loose ends and includes suggestions for web sites or other books to refer to for areas that fall outside the scope of this book.

The companion web site is also extremely useful, easy to use, and witty. The few typos in the book are noted on the web site.

Summary: Excellent book for HTML Basics
Review: This is a great beginners reference book, for a basic understanding of HTML tags. Along with each tag, it gives a decent example of how to use them. The descriptions, of what each tag does, are short and straight to the point. It also explains what happens on both major browsers,(MS IE & Netscape), when certain tags are used. If you want to learn HTML tags quickly, this is a good start.

Summary: In another league from other HTML guides
Review: I have read many books on HTML and this is by far the best. All the examples are easy to follow, the excellent layout of the book helping in this regard. Also the depth this book goes to is outstanding, Elizabeth Castro covers ALL areas of HTML so you will not need another book. Firstly I bought "HTML 4 for dummies" which is appalling in comparison with no logical flow of subject. Buy this book; you will not be disappointed.

Summary: The perfect HTML book to get you started.
Review: I have seen too many HTML guides that are page after page of straight text with few illustrations and no examples. Now these are fine if you're just interested in theory, but what if you want something to get you started coding HTML?

At the recommendation of a friend I purchased this book. Within a few weeks of using this book, I felt very comfortable coding and editing HTML WITHOUT any kind of WYSIWYG editor (Frontpage, Composer). I started creating all my HTML pages using notepad or wordpad. I figured out how to do some simple style sheets, tables, text editing, all kinds of links, images, etc.

The book is set up like this: First it's organized into chapters by topic. Each chapter contains a number of new things to learn. Each section, such as "Using Background Color (page 98)" contains a short intro paragraph (usually no more than a few sentences), step by step written instructions, tips, plus two illustrations, one of the code and one of the output of that code. The book also contains a very thorough index, color chart, html tag list, and compatibility guide.

If you want to learn the basics of HTML this book is just the thing. It will take you through the whole process from planning, through design and building your site, to publishing it.

Summary: Learn HTML in no time!
Review: Much like the rest of the Visual Quickstart Guide series, HTML 4 for the World Wide Web is a tremendous learning guide. Clear, concise writing style that is both non-exhaustive and informative.

The Table of Contents and the Index are very good. Merely look up what you want to know in either one and then 4-5 pages later, you're coding away.

It's no accident that this is one of the top web books on Amazon.com

Summary: Very easy and extremely helpful
Review: I REALLY LIKE this book. It's probably the most helpful html book I ever had. Without the help of this book, I will never know anything about the world wide web. What I really like about this book is that on the front of the last cover it has 162 different colors which you can choose to make your own website! I had this book nearly about an year and I still have it, looking as new as ever!
