Summary: Good intorductory book, for begginers-intermidiate levels
Review: I think this is good book for beginners to intermediate level. I've read this book through in about 10 days. Very easy written, with good pictures. Easy to understand and remember. Covers MOST of the topics required for Network+ exams. However this book is not enough to prepare for Network+ exam. Some topics are oversimplified, why another are not enough covered. A lot of topics explained very briefly, without any details that would help one to understand and better memorize it. Majority of snapshots are taken from win98 machine, while we are half a way to Longhorn. 99% of the examples and troubleshooting techniques assume windows computers. I can recommend this book as a very good introductory book, but definitely not all in one Network+ study aid.

Summary: Excellent book for Network+ exam
Review: I took the Network+ today and passed with a score of 800+ out of 900 (passing score is 646). This book was a tremendous help in providing a solid understanding of basic networking. Mike Myer's humor takes a bit to get used. But this is a technical book and at least he tries to keep things interesting. The book covers probably 80% to 90% of the subject matters that were on my actual test. The practice tests included is helpful. I would say that over 70% of the questions are similar to what appear on the test. Anyone preparing for this exam should also search the Internet for other practice exams. Also,I would never attempt to take any test based on just one book. You should always have another text fro reference.

Summary: Good---but doesn't cut it
Review: I was disappointed when I read this book. Unlike Michael Meyer's A+ book, this book is full of non-sensible technical jargon that will leave your mind dizzy and gasping for air. However, it's thoroughness is well done and can be a very useful tool for the would-be Network Administrator. I recommend this book for those who would like supplemental reference.

Summary: Finally a great certification book!
Review: If you have read by past reviews of IT books you know that I'm pretty unforgiving toward sub-par certification books.

Thankfully, Mike Meyers, "Network+ Certification All-In-One Exam Guide" is a glowing example of how lots of experience, great writing and skillful editing can unite to form a beautiful book. This is rare in the days of, "can't wait to get it to press (profit)" publishing.

Meyers writes VERY clearly, gives detailed examples, plenty of illustrations (which really helps me to remember) and terrific, easy-to-understand analogies. It is actually a joy to read!

I haven't taken any practice tests yet, so I'm unsure how well Meyer's focus and depth are appropriate for the exam. However, it seems to me that Meyer's differs from other authors in that he provides a lot of detail, but then explains the details in such a way to make them understandable and thus EASY to remember! I really quite amazed because I haven't yet found an author who is as capable of doing this.

Meyer's tone is perfectly balanced between the two extremes of being too dry and too humorous. I can take the dry humorless tone of some authors but the intrusive- often stupid- humor of other authors have lead me to sometimes return books the same day I've purchased them. In short, I find Meyer's tone unobtrusive and actually refreshing- and I tend to be very picky about such things.

Great job Mike!

Update July 11, 2004:

Ok, I've taken my Network+ exam and passed (846 out of 900). Meyers book was not the only preparation material I used though. The Exam Cram 2 Network+ review book is excellent. It goes into more detail than Meyer's book, but you really need to first read Meyer's book to understand the Exam Cram 2 fully. In addition, I used the Transcender practice exams which were right on the money- very similar to the actual exam. I also tried the 2nd Boson practice exam which was only ok. The practice exams in Meyer's book were much easier than the actual Network+ exam but is a good review before tackling the tougher Transcender exams. Best of luck to you!

Summary: It does not cover all the material in the Network+ exam.
Review: Like other reviewers had said, this book is an extremely easy read. I finished this book in about 10 days. However, I also just passed the Network+ certification exam and found out COMPTIA does test you on VLAN, Wireless LAN, & DSL. This Meyers' book did not cover these materials well or at all.
Overall, this book is not as good as his other book on A+.

Summary: He does it again!
Review: Man, I wish all books for certification were written like this. Again, extremely informative and it challenges you to think of real world scenarios related to networking. Also, he throws in little tricks throughout that will aid you in troubleshooting and configuration. Can't wait to his next book. This is a guy who really knows his stuff and is not afraid to share it. Finally, the OSI model is explained in an interesting and easy to understand model. Hats off to you Mike you have done it again! I have not written the test yet but the book follows the objectives of 2002 exam and I am sure there will be no surprises when exam time comes.

Summary: Aced Net+ after only 3 weeks
Review: Michael Meyers rules! He is hands down the best at explaining anything that I have encountered in a long time. I purchased his A+ book after having failed the Windows segment and then subsequently passed it. After having passed Microsoft's 2000 70-210 Exam, I wasn't going to make the same mistake with the Net+ that I did with the A+. I ordered this from Amazon[.com] along with Microsoft's Nework+ Readiness Review, read almost everyday for 3 weeks and boom - aced the test, baby! If I can, you can. The only glaring omission that I needed to research further was a more complete list of ports - a must know for the exam.

Summary: Not bad..but use a good exam practice cd
Review: Mike Meyers is funny in his computer humor (probably meant for true computer geeks). He really needs to focus more on the facts of the exam instead of attempting to be the other Mike Meyers...which he isn't. I like the book it was really easy to read and he made a point to specify what pertained to the exam. I passed the exam on 4/16/2004 with a 740. I have to admit I used the transcender simulated exam test and it was fairly close. I think in the end that you need to know the OSI layers inside and out and focus on the ridiculous memorization of the PORTS for ftp, smtp...etc to pass. But if you read this and do some exam prep it should be a breeze. keep up the good work Mike.

Summary: Third Edition
Review: Network + Michael Meyers - Third Edition

The amount of absolutely useless information is staggering beyond belief. Couple this with the inane attempts at corny humor and you have 704 pages that could have been 250 pages. My guess is Michael Meyers is being paid by the page.

Nothing annoyed me more about this book than the endless back tracking, inexplicable changes of subject mid paragraph. Hey Mike stick to the subject...I do not want to read 2 -3 paragraphs of text describing protocols or whatever only to be told time and time again, 'never mind that for now we will get into that later' STICK TO THE...TOPIC!!!!!

My advice would be if you were looking to pass the Network + exam for whatever reason look elsewhere for reading material this title is absolute junk!
