Summary: This book is a piece of trash
Review: Of all the beginning programming books that I have read, this is by far the worst. I would even question the notion of this being a beginners guide, since the language is definitely made for an experienced programmer. I spent most of my time trying to figure the obscure code he constructed, and the freakin' book it too damn thick...It felt like I was carrying around an encyclopedia set. I would give the book 0 stars if I had the option

Summary: If they could just split this book in half!
Review: If they could just split this book in half, and not include anything on MFC and call it C++, it would be the best book to buy! Very light reading, i am a VB programmer learning C++ and this is a very smooth transaction. The text is complemented by exactly the right amount of examples. If you don't mind paying some extra for those 300 pages on MFC, buy this book!!! and then get another for MFC that's all. The C++ part of the book is EXCELLENT!!!!

Summary: Excellent in first part Terrible in second part
Review: What drives me to write my first online review here are frustration and anger. The book makes learning MFC so hard, far harder than it supposes to be. I confessed that when selected the book I overlooked some reviews here: the first part about C++ is well written but the 2nd part about MFC is terribly bad. The reviewers told the truth. I felt that apparently the author didn't know MFC well, so he could not explain it clearly. TO COVER THIS WEAKNESS, COMPLICATED EXAMPLES WERE USED.--This is cheating. Here is a words for the author: why don't you stop at C++ and keep your fame as a best seller author, why do you want to do something out of your ability, so ugly? This book should be cut into two parts and sold seperately as two books, one in C++ the other in MFC. The first book would still be best seller, the other worst seller. I feel sorry to my students for using this book as textbook (for MFC part). Here is a word for potential buyer: don't use this book to start your MFC programming, use Microsoft Mastering Visual C++ instead, which is really excellent. Send me eamil. - Jason CNE, MCP, holder of BSCS and MSCS

Summary: There are better books than this....
Review: You would think after several prints of this book being updated from previous versions, that they would gotten the code errors out of the print, no such luck. This book has more than the acceptable amount of errors. Don't believe me? Check out the errata site for it at Wrox.com. I would suggest a copy of "C++ The Complete Reference" and "Inside Visual C++". This combination benefited me a lot more than Ivor's book did.

Summary: Easy and well written book.
Review: If you want to learn about C++, Windows 95/98 programming and Visual C++ 6.0. Then buy the book now. It is a perfect book for beginners. It explain everything you have to know to get started with Windows 95/98 programming.

Summary: Good at console applications. Vague at MFC/C++ interactions.
Review: The book was good in explaining C++ concepts and how to move around in the Visual C++ 6.0 application itself. That is something I got a lot out of from the book. When the book moved on to discuss the interaction of MFC and Visual C++, the explanantions of what was going on via the wizards was not explained well enough. Even though technically, MFC is a subject unto itself, the interaction of Visual C++ and MFC in any explanation would require more discussion. I went and purchased a separate book on MFC and used it to "fill in the holes" from this book. If this book had even 1 or 2 chapters devoted to this interaction, where chapter 13 starts, the rest of the book would have flowed much more smoothly. Richard Fernandez

Summary: This is the easiest of all the C++ books I've read!
Review: I think it was a great book for beginners. I started out proggramming with it and I can make complex programs now. Many people say it was terrible but, they must not I read it then! If you have Visual C++ 6.0, this is a must have.

Summary: In a word: EXCELLENT !
Review: It is real, to the point and with each chapter you feel more and more of a C++ and a VC++6 programmer. Oh yeah, I am also reading the "The C++ programming Language" by Bjarne Stroustrup. After a few pages of Mr. Stroustrup's version of this subject, you run to Mr. Horton's book for a dose of reality. One book is for academia and the other for programmers, this book is a programmer's friend. The only problem is the weight (1181 pages) of the book, you build muscles as you read. Thanks for the books !

Summary: Horrible explanations and techniques! 8Þ
Review: This was the book that our teacher used in our Visual C++ class. It was absolutely horrible in explaning what was going on within the code. I still have no idea what went on during that class. I really wish that our teacher would have used another book. Ivor seems to me a very confusing man...and to most of my class.

Summary: Great Book.....
Review: I'm A teen trying to learn how to program and by not wanting to leanr toy languges like Pascal or Basic I jumped right into the deep end by learning Visual C++. Allthough some things were a little difficult to understand at first I made it all the way through the book and have been makeing really cool programs and plugins. I think Mr. Horton did an excellent job on this book
