Rating: Summary: Buy this one if you want to master it through Review: As everybody knows Visual C++ is a must who is going to write big Windows applications. This book is the one out there which can teach you how to begin with it, if you only had experience with other programming languages or have patience and can slowly and carefully read through 1200 pages full of information. It is even a good book if you know yourself around with C++ programming and just want to learn Visual C++.Ivor Horton's style is very straight forward and if you are interested in programming it keeps you going through all those pages without actually being boring or repeating itself. I can only say this book is really a 5 stars out of 5.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I would just like to say that "Beginning Visual C++ 6" by "Ivor Horton" is a thoroughly excellent book. Having bought several other titles on C++ (a waste of cash), none compare to the level and attention to detail that Ivor has put together in his book. I am a professional VB developer and trying to get a good handle on C++. Ivor's clear and detailed explanations of all aspects of C++ have made this task relatively simple. I have read many programming books over the years, but none have ever inspired me to reply with either a positive or negative feedback. My new skills in C++, are definitely attributable to this brilliant book.
Rating: Summary: The Proof is in the Details Review: I have never been dissapointed by a Wrox title and Ivor's book was no different. The best description of C/C++ programming is "just enough rope to hang yourself". I have a fair amount of C++ experience and reviewed the book for teaching purposes. The text neatly divides C++ basics from Windows programming an excellent and necessary approach. The C++ portion of the text very cleanly presents the language and more importantly the nuances that make C++ the power that it is. Readers should be challenged by some of the code examples (and their terse power) and then delighted with the realization of the power of the syntax. The Windows portion of the book clearly builds from the half way point of learning the language and provides a clear and detailed primer for those wishing to learn MFC coding. No doubt this text will be used for a number of my courses.

Rating: Summary: simply briliant Review: as i said in the title, ivor did an excelent job, if u have some vb knowledge, delphi,c, or what ever, this is for u... the dude covers almost every thing there is to know... the only downside to this book, is its SIZE ! wrox should have split this boox in to 2 or 3 volumes... but besides that, if u dont mind reading 1100, when u finish reading this, you will be an excelnet vc++ programmer... ! GOOD JOB IVOR !
Rating: Summary: Great beginning book Review: This book has an abundance of in depth information that is presented very well. As always, I would prior experience in C++ and basic 'Windows Programming' would be extremely helpful. However, even if you have never written a program in your life this is still an excellent selection. Ivor Horton presents all of his material in an accurate and very comprehensive manner. The only drawback is that you may require yourself to review several, or all, sections multiple times to obtain an acceptable level of understanding for yourself. In several cases that I witnessed, a reader would read through all the material assuming that they would miraculously aquire a better understanding of the book the more they read. However in most cases they reached a point that they were lost because nearly every subject in the book requires knowledge on the previous subject to complete fully. An overall, excellent title. -dM
Rating: Summary: great book but very expensive for most hobbiests Review: My dad got this book for my mum so that she can learn c++. Thisbook needs lots of time to read since it is over 1000 pages. I usedthis book to review for the computer science ap exam and to learnwindows programming... This book is very comprehensive and the first chapters were easy as pie but i already know basic c++ so it could differ for newbies.
Rating: Summary: A very good book for beginners Review: I tried a lot of this kind of manual and I can assure:this is the best
Rating: Summary: Very good book Review: This is an outstanding book for people who have some programming experience in other languages and want to learn C++, the VC6 IDE, and and introduction to MFC. People with no prior programming may have major difficulties -- take a college course first. I have 15 years experience in C/C++, so I quickly skimmed the first half of the book. The second half proved an invaluable into to MFC and the various IDE features. One of the best techniques he describes in detail is how to swap views in SDI programs. He made what could be a complex task relatively simple to implement and expand upon. The other major effort in the book's second half was writing a somewhat useful drawing tool. But don't buy this book just to get this tutorial. The Scribble tutorial that somes with VC6 is just as good. Other useful topics are how to write DLLs and OCX controls.
Rating: Summary: Great For All Ages! Review: This Book is wonderful for people of all ages and skills. I am 12 years old and got this book for Christmas and in no time I went from writing QBASIC programs to writing fully functional Windows based programs. A Must Buy!
