Summary: Another excellent pocket consultant
Review: My library of tech books fills many shelves. Out all of those books, Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is one of the most used. I highly recommend it as a desktop reference. I refer to it all the time and it is one of the rare tech books I read cover to cover as well.

Summary: A Must Have W2K Tool
Review: This book has become my constant companion. Small enough to carry around yet crammed full of details about the Windows 2000 OS. There are no fluff words herein -- obviously the author wasn't paid by the word. Simple, concise, detailed information about every aspect of the OS fills this book from cover to cover.

If you are running the Windows 2000 OS, you must have a copy of this book!

Summary: For Novice Administrators
Review: This book is good for novice administrators because by design its intended to only introduce readers to fundamental but necessary skills. Advanced topics like PKI and Certificate Authorities aren't discussed but are for other books targeting a more experienced audience. The book contains many handy tips and notes that supplement the topics discussed. It also contains many helpful screenshots and the topics are organized and easily understood. It doesn't contain a CD-ROM. An electronic version (CD-ROM or online) would have been a great addition but may have drove the price higher. As a desk reference it is quite useful.

Summary: Perfect companion for win2k sysadm
Review: This book is indeed one of the best Windows 2000 references (IMHO, the best). While it does not really fit in a regular pocket and does not teach you how to start working with win2k, it comes in extremely handy when you need to know how to get work done as a win2k administrator. So far I have not found a single error in the book.

I think the coverage is very complete, but given the comlexity of win2k, some areas are bound to be left out. Suffice it to say that this book looks like it has everything I need to do my job. If you work as a win2k administrator, definitely get this volume.

Summary: The Windows 2000 book I pick up most often
Review: This book, like its predecessor for NT 4.0, is a perfect quick reference for those tasks you may not perform very often. I've had it less than a month and I find it usually answers my questions without a detour to my other W2K texts (including those for the two courses I took). It's a tad big to be called a "pocket consultant" but it's still easy to tote to the server room. I took off a star as there are a few areas where info could be added, such as in startup configurations.
(Review of first edition).

Summary: All of William Stanek's books are great references
Review: This edition is at the top of my list of W2K Server resources. I think its written with the assumption that you want to know how and why things work. It is not meant to cover everything resource (try the resource kit and good luck trying to find what you need). This is a great resource with an easy going style understandable by a wide variety of experience levels.

Definitely 5 stars. The content is extremely thorough and accurate, the writing style intuitive, and Stanek's obviously an expert in the Enterprise. Check his other books, I think you'll find he is the best of the best when it comes to authoring technical material.

Summary: W2K admin guide for everyone
Review: This is the best Win2K Server book I have come across for daily administration. Stanek's writing style is actually enjoyable to read and easy to understand. He obviously knows the subject, and this book is like attending an expert training class. It's refreshing to read a book written for the real admins. I also used it to help prep for MCSE tests on Win2K.

I particularly bought the book because I needed additional training on Active Directory. It has also helped with our DNS and DHCP configuration. Finally I found a book that covers Win2K DNS in good detail and also details how it integrates with AD. After reading the book, I finally fixed our DNS and AD problems. Another highlight of the book for me was his covering disk configurations, roaming profiles and EFS. Lots of expert tips and insights. Again, the book's not an exhaustive reference on the subject but is a solid daily adminstration reference. I highly recommend this book as a primary tool to correctly learn how to admin a Win2K domain.

Summary: Truly the admin bible
Review: When and if you find yourself wondering "how do i do that again?" or "how does that work?" you will need this book. Its small enough to place on your desk and big enough to contain all the information about Windows 2000 as it relates to an administrator.

This book never comes up short in the help department. You cant remember it all and you dont need an 900 page book to remind you. Pick this up and keep it handy. You wont be let down when you need it most.

Summary: The Ultimate Book for Win2000
Review: Without exaggeration I would truly say this is one of the best books I've ever read. It skips the usual waste of paper that most books practice and jumps over subjects like "What is a log" or other basic babbling. Instead this book just gives you the meat and potatoes, straight to the point. And don't pay attention to the word Pocket Reference, its nearly a full sized book, 500 pages and 2 inches thick. I really appreciated the fact they used a high quality cover (very hard to damage) and the two corners have been rounded off, so your book won't suffer from the "bent corner syndrome" you get from carrying it around too much. If you have computer experience and want to learn how to become a Win2000 god, you MUST buy this book.
