Summary: Most constructive Actionscripting Book
Review: First of all, I recommend this book to people who are already a flash developer, and those who are in the midst of learning actionscript.
This advanced actionscripting book for Flash MX is unique for it's fluid, non-dry approach of teaching actionscript.
While most programming books floods the whole book with intimidating codes and programs, this book displays many graphical elements to let users know better what a particular code does.
Accompanied with a high amount of examples and projects to let users understand better what they have read, the accompanying CD includes examples and projects that are pre-scripted, so that users can utilize hands-on experience. And also a "completed" project for users to compare their result with the original.
Not only does this book teaches the new methods, functions and event handling methods, it also teaches all the previous actionscripting knowledge skills that applies to Flash 5. So users can get the best of Flash 5 and the new Flash MX actionscripting tricks. You won't miss out a thing if you complete this book!
All in all, this is a great book to get addicted on reading it.

Summary: Finally a Developer who can teach!
Review: I do a lot of advanced ActionScripting and development, but I have had a lot of holes missing and things that I did not quite understand. This book fills in the gaps that are left out with other Flash books. This book explains the process and programming in a complete and easy to understand fashion. This books shows and explains the how and the why.

This is a great book, even if you are more advanced with ActionScript, you'll find yourself understanding more about it and new ways to develop and program your Flash development projects.

Summary: A very useful book
Review: I found this book to be very helpful. It breaks Actionscripting down into easily digestible chunks and leads you through the learning process step by step. The lessons are clearly and entertainingly written and the humour is an unexpected bonus. I found it especially helpful that the book gives a detailed description of what each element in a script does.

Summary: Everything I Ever Wanted To Know About ActionScript
Review: When I upgraded to Flash MX, I made a resolution to learn how to use ActionScript (which I'd been deathly afraid of since Flash 4), so I went out and bought the biggest "How-To" book I could find and worked through all the exercises.

I was very impressed by the capabilities of ActionScript the book's projects demonstrated, but felt like I was working more on my typing skills than developing any true understanding of the subject. The lessons always boiled down to "type this here, now type this there, now save and test your movie. Isn't that great?!" Yes, the final product WAS great, but I couldn't always figure out the reasoning behind the steps I was following.

My frustration led me back to the bookstore, to look for a book that would tell me something about WHY to use ActionScript rather than simply HOW to use it. I picked up a copy of Macromedia Flash MX ActionScripting: Advanced Training From The Source, read the Introduction, glanced through some of the exercises and bought it there on the spot. As the authors state in the Introduction, every single line of code in the book is explained, describing exactly what's going on every step of the way. I'm about halfway through it now and already have such an improved understanding of ActionScript that I've been able to play around with the projects in the book, adding my own code as well as altering the code that's already there. The book not only gives you an increased understanding of the logic and reasoning behind ActionScript, but also some illuminating insights into the way Flash uses and interprets that code "behind the scenes".

Another advantage to buying the book is the co-author's on-line resource, ... In addition to some great Flash info, it also has a comprehensive errata list of the typos that have been found in the book itself (which are surprisingly few, given the amount of info involved.) There's nothing more frustrating than spending an hour working your way through a lesson in one of these books, only to end up with a final product that doesn't do what it's supposed to do because you correctly copied a typo from the text. If you're dealing with a book with no or poor on-line support, you could just be left to wonder what went wrong, but having a dependable resource for troubleshooting those kinds of problems is a real plus.

If you want to know what's really going on with ActionScript, this is the book for you!

Summary: Great book for intermediate to advanced Flash users
Review: Makes transition from Flash 5 to new Flash version smooth! One of the first books I've seen that deals with Flash MX (Flash 6).
I'm an intermediate level Flash developer and I found this book extremely helpful. The chapters are clearly laid out by content and easy to understand. The programming is advanced but well explained and accessible to non-experts with some Flash experience. Building applications step by step is one of its best features. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Flash programming.

Summary: Learning Action Script? - Buy this book, it is the best.
Review: If you're looking for a straightforward way to learn Action Script, you must get this book. It includes excellent examples in a hands-on, project-based learning environment. It really demystifies a lot about scripting in Flash. I've bought several books dealing with Flash MX, and this is definitely the best one I've ever read.

Summary: I don't believe it
Review: right now I have been tweening in flash for several months and I got some honest comments from visiters of my website that it was dull and boring. I aggreed with these comments and decided to take it one step further thus I bought this book to learn actionscripting. I have had a little previous knowledge of programming, I have learnt full HTML and a bit of visual basic 6.0. But none of this knoledge came in that useful when it came to action script. This book teaches you from the beginning, right up to the advanced. But the main reason I wrote this review is because I totaly disagree with the review writen by someone called 'A Reader from USA' I mean to say I no the title is a bit misleading but for god sakes, how on earth can you give this book such a bias and unfair judgement if you haven't even bought it and you said that you only ficked though it. Honestly how stupid can you get.

Summary: Excellent Concepts and Examples for Intermediate User
Review: This book is very well written for the lay person to intermediate user. It explains concepts in a clear and concise manner for non programmers but still packing in lots of important and relevant information. The examples are both conceptually useful as well as attractive for the graphic design audience.

This is not your typical "look what i did with Flash, Ma" I'll explain what i did without really imparting any knowledge to the reader. This really outlines concepts and programming techniques for the intermediate user.

Summary: Another Promising Disappointment from MM Press
Review: Okay, so my rationale for getting this title is a bit questionable: I've been struggling with learning this not-exactly-user-friendly program for about two years now, and figured it was such a bear to begin with, why not delve into Flash's scripting language and get immersed in the most complex aspect of it? If nothing else, it might make Flash's more basic tools seem that much easier. Some other reviewers complained it wasn't advanced enough; that wouldn't be a deterrent for me.

Things started off promising enough: this was the first time I'd tried using such extensive script in the Actions Panel, it was actually working, and I was starting to not only get a sense of accomplishment but also sort of grasp the syntax of it all. If I messed something up, there was the Output Window to show me what I needed to change, and fixing mistakes is one of the best ways to learn.

However, starting at around Chapter 4, it became painfully obvious that the proofers didn't check what was written in the book against the tutorial files on CD. So here was another challenge, and eventually I was able to figure out what was intended ..... though it was not helpful when the authors would tell you to add some script but were not clear about exactly where to add it. By Chapter 6, when instructed to create a script in a new, blank document and not having it come out as the authors described even after the third attempt, things became seriously annoying.

Most publishers of these sorts of books post corrections to errors on their websites, and give readers opportunities to to report such. Sadly, niether is the case with Macromedia Press, which I think is somewhat arrogant ..... I guess they figure they supply the software, so we struggle with their screwups in print. Not that this book doesn't have useful information: it does, and the authors present it well, with potentially good tutorials and in depth interpretations of the scripting language. But buyer beware: it is by no means a perfect volume, and if you purchase it, prepare for no small amount of frustration.
