Rating: Summary: Always the best from Macromedia Review: This book is one of the best investments I have ever made. As an intermediate Flash user, I was able to entirely comprehend ActionScript enough to where I was writing my own scripts within hours. I have been through several Flash MX books and I found out that the best one could come from no more than the people who created Flash themselves. There are so many books that I read in which the first three or four pages are understandable and give you the impression that you are on your way to understanding Actionscript, however, after the first chapter, it starts reading things that you dont understand with no explanation, making one wonder if he/she missed something along the way, when really the book simply didnt explain it. This book doesnt leave you guessing with anything and I noticed that many doubts I had while reading something were cleared up in their comprehensive tips and notes. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in writing your own scripts in ActionScript.
Rating: Summary: The Real McCoy for Beginners and Intermediate Flash MX Review: I will agree with some of the other reviews. This is not an advanced book, so the title is alittle misleading. And while it is also true that some of these tutorials can be found on the web the time it would take to gather all of this information would be rather time consuming. That being said, this book is a top notch beginner to Intermediate Flash Developer's reference. I have certainly purchased my share of flash books and this one is pound for pound the most comprehensive, methodical, well-written book on my shelf. I probably reach for this one along with ASTDG more than any others when I really need answers/explanations. I am not an advanced developer YET, so this is suiting me just fine, when my skill level reaches a more advanced level, well we all know that more than one reference is needed for any program anyway, so whatever! This is the go to guide until your an advanced Flash developer. And even then, I still think there is plenty of useful info in this one. If you don't really respond to those this is my Design/Dev Co. and this is my big Flash project so follow along and maybe you will learn something books and want to be held by the hand just alitle, you will get alot out this book. I would have liked to have given 4 1/2 stars for the misleading title. Welcome to the real world!
Rating: Summary: A Most Excellent Book Indeed... Review: Derek Franklin and Jobe Makar have supplied fantastic sripting solutions in an easy to read composium- it's like a thriller you won't be able to put down. The best part of it is, if you get stuck, the authors are generous with their knowledge- Derek personally responded to my questions via email. I'm really impressed with that. These guys are first class, and this book rocks.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book on Earth! Review: This is, bay FAR, the best book since the Bible. This book will not only teach you ActionScript, but you will also learn Economics, How to Tie Complex Knots, as well as how to make a great Omlet. I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to live a healthy and fruitful life.
Rating: Summary: This book Rocks!!! Review: I have read many programming books and none have been as useful as this one. Alot of those books simply rephrase content that might already be in the Macromedia Flash User manual, and they just give it a new cover, and we all know thats not what we need. Thats not the case here, Derek does an awesome job with his guidence though Flash MX and way to maximize its functionality though realistic scenarios and sample code. Derek uses good analogies to describe the actionscript and how its works... good for both the experienced programmer and the newbie! When I had a question about the book, I was able to contact Derek and got an immediate response to my question! That is something that I have never experienced. He provides good guidence as well as a solution to the problem that I was having. This book is definately a must read... and afterwards it can serve as a solid reference guide.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Learning Action Script!! Review: From the very begining script to the advanced script, this book is so easy to understand and helpful!!
Rating: Summary: The way to learn AS! Review: I have a pile of books that teach AS with Flash projects, mostly Flash 5, but this book is far ahead of the crowd. The projects are simple yet highly effective and the organization and content is wonderful. It covers the basics quickly and moves on to intermediate and advanced concepts and code. It is not for advanced programmers who want to be experts. There are a few editing problems but you'll survive them. Go to their Web site for some of the corrections. - jim
Rating: Summary: Advanced?? Not really... Review: I am into the 4th chapter and I sometimes just can't help but chuckle about the simplicity of this book. The author assumes that the reader is a complete newbie to Flash & ActionScript. He repeats things until the horse is dead, dead, dead! The book is full of fluff to increase the page count. However, if you never touched ActionScript or any programming language then this book is for you. It's a book that will take a newbie to an intermediate level if you can get passed the fluff and not fall asleep to the repeating advice. There are mistakes in the book as well. Ran into one last night that I couldn't believe was missed in the editing process. It's a lesson paced book which is why I bought it but I would opt for something else if you want an "Advanced" ActionScript reference.
Rating: Summary: Exelent book, best flash book I have Review: Is sad that some advance users just to show off will give a bad rating to this book. First of all the authors explain like real doctors of education, with great patience and artistry, to explian every line of code. It does cover all the aspects of action script that will give you the edge to start using it efficeintlly. This expert developers dont take in account that most of the flash community is not experts like them, theres ha huge truckload of designers and animators who do not have any programming experience wich this book will give it to them. This book is call advance becuase thats a reallity most people who use flash dont know action script and very few as C++ or some languague experience. Also tutorials on internet are a good thing, but usually they are poorly explain, not troughfull so if you might get a tutorial on the enterframe event but is not a bit as good as the way this authors explian in this book. Is the most absurd thing to say that if you have take a tutorial on how to make a button you know all about this book, only is an eggocentric show off line. Most of webmasters outthere who also make sites and use flash, will consider this action script book advance, maybe you complaintng advance users should look for an expert book, not advance.
Rating: Summary: Advanced? Review: A agree with the other reviewer of this book... it's not worth it. Most of the information you find in this thing is available on the internet all over the place and doesn't need to be repeated in this book. I recommend "Macromedia Flash Super Samuri" instead. There you will find innovative and real-world examples of how to take your Flash authoring to the next level. This book is for absolute beginners.
