Summary: Great resource; makes the technical simple!
Review: As MacAddict's Ask Us columnist and author of Apple Confidential, I'm happy to recommend Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible by Todd Stauffer. This massive 942-page paperback helps you identify the bottlenecks in your system, then plan, perform, and troubleshoot the entire upgrade process. Stauffer not only covers increasing your raw processing power by replacing your Mac's CPU, he also discusses the pros and cons of adding memory, hard drives, input devices, networking capability, and a whole range of peripheral possibilities. At just $39.99, Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a lot cheaper and more reliable than most consultants, plus it comes with a CD-ROM loaded with more than 50 useful freeware, shareware, and demo tools.

Summary: Wonderful reference text--good for all users.
Review: As someone who is the default tech support for her family and friends, I find this book to be an invaluable reference. If I can't draw the information from memory, it's there and easy to find. A must have for the upgrade addicts and low end mac users of the world!

Summary: Excellent Reference
Review: I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about the Macintosh. After reading this extensive, well written and documented text I only added to the knowledge I have gathered over the years. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible is a fantastic resource guide for upgrading, troubleshooting, and general tips on the Macintosh. After reading the book I had no problems installing a high speed SCSI card in my own Mac. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible contains a wide range of useful information and guides the reader through the implementation this information (e.g., troubleshooting SCSI devise ID's). I found the section about digital cameras especially helpful when I started looking at the specifications of various models in order to make a knowledgeable choice about which one to buy. The Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible covers just about any add-on device (e.g., scanners, printers), how they work, and how they interface with the Mac to produce the best results. Within the rapidly changing area of Macintosh technology this book is a great reference for Mac users who want to understand the technology and make the best use of it. I found reading this book a wonderful learning experience, as are all of the "Mac Bible" series books from IDG.

Summary: Excellent trouble shooting guide for Macs
Review: I work doing technical support for virtually all facets of computing (Macs, IBM's, e-mail, Internet access, basic LAN, software and hardware problems, general "how to" questions in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, Mac OS 8, Windows 95, etc..). This book, "Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible" has already been a very useful tool in assisting in troubleshooting basic Mac problems that I run into on a daily basis. After one reading session of reading this extensive book, I was able to successfully troubleshoot one of the problems that I run into on a daily basis. The problem was that a person was having a problem with their Macs booting up to a question mark on the screen. This sometimes denotes that the driver or software that tells the Mac how to access the hard drive has become corrupt, in which case the user can boot off the system software CD, go into the utilities folder and select drive setup and perform a drive update. I never would have known this had I not read this book. I continue to learn new things each and every day I read this wonderful resource guide for troubleshooting and just overall general personal knowledge. I also own the Mac OS 8 Bible which has been very helpful as well. I recommend this book and all books that IDG Books publish. My next book will probably be Photoshop 4 Bible by the same publishers. Well done!!

Summary: This book rocks!
Review: I'm not really a Mac guy, so somtimes when the Mac-folks ask me to try fixing their Apples, I usually run away. However, now that I have the Upgrade and Repair Bible, I take it with me when I have a troublesome Mac. The solution is always in the book. A must have for anyone who wants to fix computers and not break them.

Believe it or not, three years after I started using this book and fixing Macs, I'm a die-hard Mac user myself. I guess, the lack of needing to use this book as often as I expected, certainly was a great reason to switch.

Summary: Another winner from Todd
Review: If your Mac's out of warranty, you have nothing to lose by trying to fix it yourself. Stauffer's the man when it comes to clear explanations of needed repairs. I replaced the hard drive and CD-ROM drive following his book's advice. The book paid for itself.

Summary: So good, I based a class on it!
Review: This book covers most everything the wanna be Mac tech needs to know to be able to get into their system intelligently, without making expensive mistakes. It's not preachy or over technical from my standpoint, and it makes a great reference for when you need to tackle a problem yourself, rather than spending a lot of money for someone like me to come out and fix your computer.

I like the bredth and depth of the information given so much, that I am going to use it as the class text in my free Mac Troubleshooting class at Santa Ana College
