Rating: Summary: Interesting but headache-causing graphics all over the place Review: Overall this is a great introductory book to the Internet, amazing in its thoroughness. The introductions to the chapters tend to get repetitious and wordy, but they are informative and enjoyable. The illustrations, however, are remarkably tough to follow, with numbers flying here and there and the same PC/server diagrams on every page. Also, I am amazed an Internet intro book does not have a glossary...
Rating: Summary: Great overview of the internet and related technologies Review: Simple, easy top read, give lots of indepth info for the non-techie and answers to all the questions you've wanted to ask.Great starter book on the internet for someone who wants to understand better everything from digital media technology to ASPs to how ISPs work.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic reference. Review: The ZD Press and Preston Gralla have given me a fantastic source of reference for not only Internet but LAN/WAN architecture and function. The graphics make even complex protocols easy to understand. I use this as a companion text for my college networking textbook.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: This book gets right to work answering your questions about the internet from the first page on. Stunning graphics make the information very accessible and easy to comprehend.
Rating: Summary: very elementary and superficial Review: This book has glitzy graphics. Reading it, I was not sure where it was headed. Nowhere in particular, it turned out. Each "chapter" has a page or two-long introduction followed by a couple of pages of illustrations breaking down the various aspects mentioned in the introduction. Could be a useful book for learning the jargon of the internet but nothing more. I was hoping for the nuts and bolts description, but most of it was superficial. Maybe a decent introductory book for someone who has just discovered the "net".

Rating: Summary: Very Very Basic Review: This book is good for a person that have no idea what internet is all about, and of course and his job is not related with telecommunications or communications engineering. For a guy which is already working on this field will result extremly basic, maybe shall look for something else more formal bye
Rating: Summary: It explains complex technology in very easy language Review: This book is very easy to read. It takes you through different levels of internet technology using simple language and colourful graphics. It is a very useful material to consult at the moment when you want to get a fast internet conexion at home but you do not know how to do it. This is a book about internet architecture and technologies. Nevertheless, the chapter about how to make phone calls on the internet does not mention nor a software neither how to get a software that can let you make long distance phone calls on the internet. But I learned a lot about how it works!!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent current information presented clearly & concisely Review: This book presents this somewhat complicated subject in clear understandable language and diagrams. Both the novice and the experienced user/surfer will discover new facts or clear up a misconception about the technologies of the Internet. Many terms are defined and explained, including the interactions of computers and associated hardware devices, communications, software, and protocols.
Rating: Summary: Great one volume internet reference library Review: This book was very helpful to me in visualizing how a lot of these things work. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand more about the internet and how it works.
